Asher Roth Talks About Sleeping ‘In The Bread Aisle’

 [vodpod id=ExternalVideo.891860&w=425&h=350&fv=]

YN’s new favorite rapper sat down with MTV’s Tim Kash and talked about his debut LP, Asleep In The Bread Aisle. As previously reported, “Be By Myself” is the official follow up to “I Love College.” I swear, this has to be the fastest mixtape to album release in rap history.

You have to be kidding me with this guy already. I respect that he is an artist like anyone else doing his expressive thing but..You can’t honestly tell me that your old head ass is impressed with his skills. I mean seriously?? Did you get brain damage?? Golden back concepts at best. What? Hes going to crack the state school market wide open? They download all their albums for free anyway. Does anyone else over the age of 24 really think this guy is a “Lyrically Amazing” rapper??I mean everyone is gimicked out but this kid is on another level. This kid makes Paul Barman look like Tupac. Not hating I have respect that he even takes himself serious or doesn’t get beat up or something. Has it really come to this level?? Mediocre at best being put on a pedastal. Someone please explain this to me. Or is it the old bandwagon Steeze?? Payola Payola rocks!!!

    Yo, BROTH,

Asher Roth is positive, which makes him the best at what HE DOES. Is he the best rapper alive? No. But neither is anyone else.

Hip-Hop was built on critiquing, but at a point it becomes hating. When you have no solid reference points. What about Asher Roth makes him unworthy of praise? Did you hear him lose his mind on Drama’s joint? Or were you too focused on not liking him? Chill, sun. He’s good for Hip-Hop.

  3. Jackson says:

Nothing against this kid–let him enjoy his 6 months of fame as a gimmicky pop star and have fun, get girls, etc–but it really says something about the state of hip hop and rap journalism that something like this gets taken seriously. Can you imagine the response this guy would have gotten if this had come out in 93? I can understand if some kid in a college newspaper really dug this album but for someone who has been involved in hip hop from jump to be promoting this stuff is pretty sad. When are the people that know better gonna start insisting that rappers make good music again. Or am I just naive and old?

    Yo Ferrari,

Who cares about positive? Gandhi would’ve made a terrible rapper….”the fastest mixtape to album” rapper ever….i think the reason is so no one has time to figure out that he’s all promotion and little talent….you ever been the a dave mathews band concert? do so, look around and think of asher roth….cuz thats where he comes from….rap for white people who dont like rap. GARBAGE!

I mean I understand ferrar. I’m not trying to just hate for hate’s sake. I give the kid credit. Hes Major. People like him. Anyone who can make something out of their art and be creative with it gets props from me. But….

There are some terms being thrown around about this kid thats just crazy.

For instance this is from his website:

“Steve Rifkind (Wu-tang, Akon, David Banner, Big Pun, Loud Records, SRC, etc. etc.) calls me the “best lyricist he has heard in the last 10 years.”

When statements like this are made it raises the bar a little. Its almost offensive to me that this kind of stuff goes unchecked. And sites like this one and some other hip hop blogs… seem to plug it like they are getting paid. Which you must be in some way. I find it impossible to believe that you give this kid that much coverage without being compensated in some form.

Also MTV throws this out there:”Not only has Roth been pegged as one of the next generation of great MCs, but some have placed the future of hip-hop in his hands.” I don’t see how a regular kid who gets bitten by the hip hop bug after hearing Jay-Z’s hard knock life volume 2 is going to be the future. Again I don’t hate this guy. Let him get his shine. But don’t act like you think hes the second coming. And for real I’ll give credit where its due. I just don’t see where its due. I mean theres artists out there like MC Chris or something that dwarf this guy in terms of lyrics and rhyme structure alone. Not to mention a ton of other artists from like 8 to ten years ago who would crush this guy and are never even mentioned on this site. Which I thought was supposed to be like the “realest” hip hop site out there. All these things do is payola and copy each other’s posts. Its mad fabricated. I’m only saying Mc Chris cause hes white. Its like people are trying to pass Aroth off as a genius because theres nothing else going on. Thats just retarded. I don’t buy it YN. Did Rifkind suge knight you over a balcony to get you to do this? From what I understand hes a big dude. And I admire his attempt to bring the whole “Birkenstock turned Air Jordan” style to the forefront but don’t act like we are idiots. I mean look at people who no longer even have a career that were great..Last Emp. Jay Tredds. Dare I say it…El-P. Cage before he sucked. Thirstin Howl is active but not heard about. Now don’t instantly peg me as the backpack guy either. I know what I have been mentioning is that type of sound but its true. They kill this kid conceptually and delivery wise. But now this guy hold the future in his hands?? Thats blasphemous. And then the guy starts throwing out statements like this and people act like hes the only one to ever say these things…””Everything is not lovely. The economy is not the only thing wrong with our country. There’s a lot going on, and people should not just go home and zone out to the TV. People want change…” I mean c’mon. Non phixion, Immortal Tech. Haven’t they said the same thing 10 years ago?? Its not about being white. Its about not telling people the kid is jesus. You know the influence you have on the youth of today with this innnanet shit (chea!!) and I can no longer sit quiet and watch propaganda spew forth from these types of “established” hip hop authorities. Its just disturbing to me. And I’m white and from the suburbs. I never liked dave matthews. Its fine let the white suburban guy get his shine. But this is not a true representative of what people from areas like that are like. This is like some SUNY shit. Straight up Platsburg. Phish reunion fans will flock to this guy and maybe he’ll sell millions. But he will never be the future of hip hop. Not in my ears. And what about (ohhh noo don’t do it) DOOM?? He just dropped an album. Is he not a great lyricist? Say what you will but even Mos Def recently endorsed him as one of the greats. And white people love Blackstar. Its like watching Kenny G get inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame while charlie parker panhandles in the parking lot. C’mon now. No one sees me on this at all?? And I hate to think that the media tries to control what people think but in this case your polluting the minds of young white tees everywhere into thinking that this is dope. I just think he’d get punched in the face at end of the weak or something like that. And again I wish the young guy luck and congrats on the success so far but just because your halo buddies tell you “You’re the Truth son!!” doesn’t make it true. Other than that I can’t really hate on the kid. He is positive he is humble. But do us a favor and post something that you don’t get paid for and base it on your opinions not your paycheck.
