The year? 1998. The song? “Banned From TV”. The verse? Jermain Baxter’s. A year after being a part of the hip-hop collective The Firm, Nature found himself pitted with more rappers (Big Pun, Cam’Ron, Styles P, and Jadakiss) on N.O.R.E.’s self titled debut album. Anchored by Swizz Beatz gorgeous horns, Nat kicked things off and made a name for himself with unapologetic lines, “Kick street tales, choking niggas like I’m Spreewell.” With a documentary in tow, Nate spoke to Rap Radar about his mean 16.
The original record was only supposed to be me and N.O.R.E. Swizz started playing a whole bunch of beats [and] he played the one that’s “Banned From T.V.” now. I fell in love with it from the first time I heard it. The original record was only supposed to be me and N.O.R.E. Next time I heard my verse, I hear all these other guys on it. I wanted to change my verse at the time ’cause I didn’t know all those guys was going to be on it. But by that time, it was already mixed so I couldn’t do nothing.
I ain’t really say, “Oh, I’m a write this for people to remember for years.” I felt the beat so strong as soon as I heard it. I always kinda wanted to be one of the first to put [topics] in a musical form and I think at the time no one was doing that. I would incorporate currents events [or] whatever.
We shot a video for it [too]. That was like the first time we had all those guys together. Everybody at the same time was like, “Yo!”, especially Pun, cause he came directly behind me. He was like, “Man, I had to play the verse over and over again!” And I felt that was a good look. Pun was one of the illest.— As Told To Brian “B.Dot” Miller

I'm down for good music for a good cause but this ain't the case. The homie Sha from MTV hit me with a question yesterday I dreaded goin' on the record about: How do I feel about hip-hop artists being included in the "We Are The World" remake? Geez, I guess we've come long way since 1985. I don't think you could do it any other way than include our culture which is the pulse of pop culture. But instead of feeling any type of validation, I feel disgust. Seriously, a complete remake of the original song? Celine Dion gettin' her Cyndi Lauper on? Lil Wayne as Bob Dylan? Fuck outta here. Didn't I see Will.I.Am in the flicks? They could gave that nigga an hour plus a pen and a pad and I'm sure he'd come up with something cheesy for no small fee but for free. I'm truly scared to hear what the final product is gonna sound like. Are we really gonna hear the soothing vocals of Nipsey Hussle in the final mix? Highly doubt it. Damn, it's the thought that counts but this just doesn't feel right. Shame on a couple of legendary nuhs named Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones. MJ is turning over in his oxygen tank.
You know you done fucked up, don't you? You know it, don't you? You know you done fucked up.
such a dope feature. This site just keeps getting better.
Banned From TV is one of illest tracks I ever heard, I still play that joint and it’s funny too because Nature part is the only one I memorized!
this track shows skill not like some of todays rappers
this track was the bomb and the album as a whole rather decent and it shows some collabs will gell and remain timeless…everybody’s verse was hard …the Lox(Jadakiss & Styles P kill it back and forth.)
Banned from T.V was one of the best songs out at the time. It’s also the most memorable because it had some of the best rappers of the time together on one track. The beat was sick.Nature’s rhyme set the tone. That opening killed it.I still bump this song in my car and always throw it back to his part.
