Chromatically and rhythmically the beat makes great sense, but sound design wise it don’t work because the groove don’t feel natural due to two factors: The shape of the drums sound overcompressed and feel bloated so there is no buoyancy to the rhythm which is why it feels so stiff. The other mistake is Dre should have turned the muted precission-bass and guitars up in the mix instead of that distorted clarinet playback sample in the background. It’s a great composition but the mix is not as great as it could be.
