The old “___________ is the Army” label foundation is flawed in much the same manner as a parent attempting to be “friends” with their child; at some point, the parent is going to try to disciplne the child, and the child isn’t going to have it. The large labels encouraged the “crew” movement because people are attracted to power– we root for a group of guys (with the always present “murda mami”) “forming like voltron” to take over the industry. This is why the Roc, Dipset,Ruff Ryders, G-Unit, Dungeon Family, Cash Money, Death Row, Bad Boy, etc used this template for success; We WANTED them to win–we felt as though we were a part of the “movement,”the success was shared with us all. The problem in (nearly all) these situations is that the label head is a successful artist themselves, and eventually the other artists don’t want to either A) stay under the shadow of the successful artists or B) continue to share the profit/spotlight with the other artists. Beanie Sigel, much like the Lox before him (First nigga talking that family shit/get a lotta dough don’t give the family shit~ Jadakiss), fell into the mentality that they really “were” a family (due to the culture that was fostered) and that label chain became his home. He forgot about being an artist; he was a “brother” to Shawn. That was why it was so hard to hear Shawn “refuse” to let him out of his contract, or not put him on BP3, or refuse to sign his release papers; he thought Shawn was really the person he had come to know, when in actuality Shawn was simply a Nino Brown– someone promoting friendship until you are no longer useful to his overall plans. This is why it hurts to hear Beans talk about this; sticking with the New Jack Metaphor, Beans represents G Money– A disgruntled fuck-up who really thought this ONE person would be “his brother’s keeper,” regardless of the actions which led up to the final falling out. The Song/conversation and response that Shawn just relayed pretty much juxtaposes the final confrontation between Nino and G-Money, with Shawn’s response being the final shot to the head– he didn’t quite believe what he was saying himself, but he knew he had to create some finality to the situation.

This whole situtation hurts to me to witness. And what I hate more is seeing grown azz men acting like the next man is supposed to hand the something. It’s b*tchmade to me. I never like to see friends go at it but at the same time, I’ve been a Roc-Fam fan since the beginning. I’ve heard all of their music and from the outside looking in, this is b*tchassness at best. While I do agree, for the sake of the friendship, Jay and Beans need to sit down and do the man thing, I disagree with how Beans is handling it in the first place. I’m a female raised by a man and the one thing my father always told me is that nobody is responsible for your success but you. If you want to be a bum for the rest of your life, the bum sitting next to you isn’t responsible for that. I remember when the Roc had primed Beans to be the next hot figure but it was up to him to take the reins and ride it out. He had everything he needed. He had the rhymes, the beats/beatmakers, the promotions. There is no way he should have ended up in his current situation. I understand he came from the gutter but so did a bunch of mofos. He chose to stay hood and got caught up. WTF is someone supposed to do with that. That’s his fault. Nobody else’s. Not Jay’s, not Dame’s, not Bleek’s. At least Bleek understood that. My thing is, he just needs to man the f*ck up, get on his grind again, and make us remember why ever thought he was hot. The same energy he put in to this diss record, he could have came with fire on something else. They gave him the game, but he folded before he saw the flop.(Poker talk) It’s all on him in my opinion. But I do think he and Jay need to have a man-to-man conversation.

I really feel Beans on this i personally wit through a similar issue with Jameer Nelson of Orlando Magic. I carried this dude all through high school and college and now because i come from a street pedigree he wont even answer my calls. i was the god father to his first born son and him to mine and now he got his bread and wont even reach out. We come from Chester Pa. one of the hardest cities to grow up in America where not too many dudes make it out. Not only has he fronted on me but he’s fronted on his whole city. He used to be such a beautiful person but that money really f#cked him up. If i could rap i would say some of the same things. Its not about money its about friendship and loyaly but if you shining you should naturally want your folks to shine with you.
