I’m a Londoner of Nigerian descent, so of course ive supported Wale from the days of ‘Uptown Roamers’. I rap as well, so i do know wat to listen out for in a rapper, compared to so many hip hop Stans who claim they know everything bout hip hop. Truth be told, Wale is a lyricist, he just switches from the sublime to the mundane…in other words, he aint consistent. Back To The Feature was 1 of the mixtapes of the year, and lemme hear someone say his Mixtape About Nothing wasnt boundary breaking. This LP isnt going to top those bodies of work unfortunately. That definitely has to do with the demands of his record label…the songs he’s putting out are clearly not as abstract as those on his mixtapes(which is wat made him stand out from the pack of rookies in the 1st place). That being said, if he was wack, he wdnt have gotten so many cosigns from legends of the game ranging from Jay Z to Xzibit…you might not understand his style of MCing, and thats understandable. He does spit garbage every now and then (his verse on the BET cipher was the worst, and highly disappointing), but dont call him wack. He’s anything but.
