TIME Ranks OB4CL 2 Top 10 Album Of ’09

TIME magazine named Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 the #7 album of the year. In fact, it’s also the only rap album listed. Congrats! Here’s what they had to say:

The sequel to Raekwon’s much loved 1995 solo debut picks up as if no time has passed. He’s still rhyming about cocaine deals, hustlers and urban menace — which makes for an elevated degree of difficulty, since a song about the production of crack (“Pyrex Vision”) should be not only impotent in 2009, but deservedly so. The reason it works, like all of Cuban Linx, Pt 2, is that Raekwon is a poet of grime, a storyteller who understands that rap is less about an easy hook than the collision of carefully chosen words. He’s also a melancholic who prefers replaying the circumstances of growing up in hell (“All my life around drug niggas, villains who want millions/ Niggas with them hoodies on with Teks in the building”) to celebrating the trappings of success. With production from nearly every top name in hip-hop, it’s a spooky and sad monograph — not lovable, but quite powerful.

THIS IS HUGE. Yo, this may be one of the best weeks in HIP HOP in a while. 2 Days ago Eminem is named the highest selling ARTIST of the decade and now Raekwon, the EPITOME of raw hip hop is named by TIME MAGAZINE. One of the top 10 ALBUMS of ANY GENRE this year. (DOPE)

PROPS TO RAE N THE WU!!! Q-TIP’S “THE RENAISSANCE” SHOULD DEFINITELY BE IN THE TOP 10 FOR ’09!!!! ALBUM WAS DOPE!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  5. Fuck Your Opinion says:

Q-Tip’s album was 2008, banger nonetheless. OB4CL2 was so overrated, not even a classic. A solid effort with incredible beats but Rae isnt a great spitter nor could anyone here drop quotables from him. People got TOO excited for this album. And no im not part of the new generation that believes in Lil Wayne.

this album deserves top honor. Chef blew it down and schooled everone young n old how to come correct in album making. eveythin bout this album shines.
the cover art is perfect. Busta Rhymes executive producing is classic. the wordplay and delivery is on point. its now the purple cd.

  9. b-girl says:

There will never be a an loss of love for Raekwon and any of the the master poets of ghetto living, but where’s the conscious rappers. I searched the web the other day and could find only about 2 or three rappers. The one I enjoyed the most was this one about economic state of the country.

i urge u. the album is DOPE, but once again, its overrated. people are goin nuts and it was just “ok.” and it DEFINATELY drug out waaaaaaaaaaaay too long. track list is just retarded long considering how many songs were throwaways.

    CLASSIC albums don’t have throwaways.
stop using that word so loosely people.

  15. southcakc23 says:

    @yaboitone,

It wasn’t a classic, thus your point is lost in translation. The only reason why so many people consider “The Purple Tape” a classic is due to Ghostface stealing the limelight on that album. OB4CL2 did not deserve to be on that list of top 10. The album was WAAAAAAAY over hyped and it just exemplified how mono-subject Rae has always been. Mafioso shit is played out like, oh, I don’t know, so 10 years ago.

my fav joint is 10 bricks shits crazy

  17. shaolin monk says:

Southcak23, it’s a theme. The album is a theme. The cuban link is like a movie series. Like the godfather for example. If you checked his last album prior to cuban linx 2 it had no drug tales on there. Raekwon made it like it was a movie by doing ot sequel style.

  18. getthesenets says:

    didn’t see this coming…

other acts on the list were non pop groups also…

good look for Chef and it should lead to a spike in sales this week…
