Earlier this month, Susan Boyle’s album, I Dreamed A Dream became the third highest selling debut. In seven days, the LP sold 701,000 copies. Currently, 50 Cent holds the crown for moving 827,000 duplicates of Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ his rookie year. Back in ’93, Snoop Dogg set the tone by scanning 803,000 units of Doggystyle. At the Esquire apartment last week, Snoop commented on Susie’s success.

Lupe’s best material was his old mixtape stuff. FNF Mixtape Vol. 1, Fahrenheit 1/15 Parts I, II and III. That’s pretty much where Lu’s hype stems from and all them joints are at least 4-5 years old. Even the leaked version of his 1st album was dope.
If someone started paying attention to Lupe when Food & Liquor was officially released in Sept. 2006 then I’d understand why they wouldn’t like him. He hasn’t been at his best since late 2005, early 2006.

So just because he brings something different in the game than flashing ice, rapping about materialism,… that’s acting superior?
That’s also what they said about Kanye at first.
Kanye was different – he talked big but then his music backed it up. People could relate to his music and so they supported him. They know about his ego but his music speaks to the people.
The thing with Lupe is that his flow is hot and he’s got meaningful things to say but it’s like he over-complicates his delivery to the point that the message is lost. It’s not every song but you know it when you hear it. That being said, that style works well for storytelling songs but not as well for other types of tracks.
For example, check the song Dumb It Down. I got what he was trying to do but then he gets so arrogant by intentionally trying to rhyme above everyone’s head. Hate to break it to you guys, although he ain’t talking about guns/sex/hoes, using obscure references in lyrics doesn’t automatically make him dope or clever. It’s just makes his music complicated and sometimes boring.
Basically, I view Lupe Fiasco as the Hip-Hop equivalent to an art film that fans say is the best film they’ve ever seen. But the reality is art films take a lot of time and patience to pay attention to and in the end it isn’t necessarily better than a blockbuster film.
Lupe is one of the best emcees of his time like Jay, Em and Nas was for theirs. Like Pac and Big was for theirs. Like Rakim, Kool G Rap was etc. etc.
Niggas that don’t like him probably fuck with Gucci Mane that porch monkey, dumb-nigga music.
