Memphis Bleek Explains Not Signing To Roc Nation

Jay’s right hand man, explains why he chose not to sign to his Roc Nation label. In this case, money isn’t a major issue.

“I coulda went to Roc Nation, but then what am I getting out of that? Another $150,000 check advance, then I come out [and] sell 300,000 probably, somebody makes two or three million, and I gotta mess with the fact that they gon’ say yo you bricked out? Like that’s the industry. And that’s [with a label run by] my homie. Now if [it’s] somebody else, [they] might not even get a 150 [thousand dollar] advance, they probably go get 30. And plus I’d rather be on my own, fam. I been in the game, like you said a decade now, I know what to do; I know what not to do. It’s time for me to have my own record [label]. I got a lot of niggas behind me that’s ready to get they shot. And me being behind Jay, they ain’t gonna never get they shot.”

i jumped off, stood on my own two like BOOM
thats that, yea i’m here to show and prove”
    -Jay-Z

bleek that was in ’99 when jay spat that. you came into the game on his back. sorry it took u so long to jump off.

hopefully its not too late, but i get the sinking feeling your ship sailed long ago.

  4. Yall kneegrows silly says:

I wish dude the best & hope him & Jay stay close. Pause. But he crazy if he think he could sell 300,000 records these days. This ain’t 2000

  5. Ty says:

If somebody has an opinion please help me out on this because I’m honestly askin’ . Shouldn’t you excel on the level you’re on before you get a promotion to the next level ? If Bleek knows so much what to do and what not to do , then why can’t he implement that knowledge and sell some of his own records ?

Or is it possible that his real gift is working behind the scenes and he never really had what it took to be up front ? If you’re an artist who never really excels can you really think any artists are gonna listen to you as an exec ? But sometimes mediocre players make the best coaches (Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Doc Rivers) . I’m kinda torn on this one. What do yall think ?

  6. I know somebody who Jay needs to get with. Everybody on this site listen to Muggsy Malone’s music and let us know exactly what you think. He recently got pick as a wildcard in the Capital City Cypher. Demolished everything. Plus his tracks are fire

You aint going to be dissappointed one bit.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF YOUR CAREER BLEEK BUDDY…

@TY… Yep that’s the truth… Bleek is a dope hype-man/back-up to Jay Z… And yes, he had some hot records over the years. But his shot at being in the spotlight himself is behind him…

    i lol’d @ 300k..

Hey, at least he’s come to grips with himself. I wish half the rappers in the game were as realistic

  10. RRcoolJ says:

Thinking he’ll sell 300,000 is far from realistic B.Dot. Let’s be real here.

  11. BEY says:

    @THE 202 MOUTHPIECE

THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF DUDES THAT CAN FREESTYLE AND SOME ARE IN MASSIVE CYPHERS. WE HAVE A FEW HERE IN PHILLY. IN 2010, RECORD EXEC ARE LOOKING FOR ARTIST WHO KNOW HOW TO MAKE SONGS, NOT FREESTYLES. THEY WANT SMASHES THAT GET HEAVY RADIO SPINS/BDS AND THAT SELL A LOT OF RINGTONES. CASSIDY WAS A GREAT BATTLE RAPPER AND IT TOOK SWISS BEATS AND CREW YRS TO TEACH CASSIDY HOW TO FORMAT SONGS. IN THIS ERA U GOTTA MAKE SONGS FOR RADIO, CLUBS, AND WOMEN AND THEN AFTER THAT U CAN PUT SOME FILLERS IN THERE WHICH MIGHT BE A GRIMEY RECORD. BUT WE ALL KNOW THAT 50 TRIED TO GO BACK TO BEING GRIMEY AND HE FLOPPED.

  12. pepe le pew says:

yall dudes are dumbasses… y’all hate for no real reason. bleek got skills… but who wants to hear from anybody buy Jay when the roc was alive. Bleek got a few hits. and 300k ain’t a lot of units to move for a dude like bleek… all you need is one radio joint and a hot video.

  13. Interscope Employee says:

LOL @ Bleek thinking he’s gonna sell 300K!!! 50 & Rick Ross stopped sellin at 300K
Gucci Mane with the biggest “buzz in the street” sold 80K first week
Snoop Dogg the veteran with a hit with The Dream bricked

who the fuck are you to sell 300K LOL

  14. mmkayy says:

im on a fone right now so i cant copy&paste lol but are u serious b.dot ? how can he come to grips w/ himself when he thinkn he can sell 300k..? He’d be lucky to sell 50k no offence

People make fun of Bleek, but at the same time, he has moved gold and platinum. In this market place, maybe not 300,000 but as history’s shown, he’s capbable of doing it

  16. Dannell Showbiz says:

Why not 300K all it takes is to have a monster hit record.

Bleek, Beans and Freeway’s problem is that, they came in the game with Jay-Z so their albums are critiqued by Jay-Z’s standards.

How is your label mate, boss, mentor gonna come out withThe Blueprint and you come out with some bullshit?

Bleek is nice but people compare him to Jay and thats a tough job. However Kanye West did it so why not Bleek?

  17. So Icy Boi! says:

I Think he sayin he can sell 300,00 total …i dnt think he talkin about first week numbers

  18. Markoni says:

Even for a total 300 K is a lot of units these days, fifty did what.. I don’t think he’s crossed 300 K so far, snoop too. Matter of fact, Only Jay Z and Eminem did some big numbers this whole year. So this guy’s total, If he’s lucky, would end up at around 100-130 K.

  19. So Icy Boi! says:

^^^ True dis year been like da biggest FLOP!! for album sells in hip-hop …besides Jay-Z and Eminem

  20. M85 says:

He can move 300k over a long course of time..he isn’t gonna sell out stores and he knows that..that’s what bdot meant he was a realistic view..and it’s still all good wit him and jay but they both realize it’s time for bleek to do his on thing..and you see jay lookin out for his man still cause that’s how bleek is gettn his distrution deal

  21. Asher Roth says:

Tony Yayo, Jim Jones and Bleek should make their own group.

  25. J-Dub Tha Great says:

First of all, everybody should know, the game is “about” 95% business and 5% talent.(Give or take.) Talent isn’t even really a factor anymore. (Look at Gucci Mane, Souljah Boy, Waka Flocka.) Shit… I’d have to say Wayne ain’t even got it no more. Don’t get me wrong, I respect they hustle. I can’t hate on nobody that out there gettin it in these rough times. Basically what I mean is anyone can go anywhere in this industry as long as they know the ropes. I don’t know what Bleek will do with it, but I DO KNOW that “IF” he HAS in fact learned anything from Hov, he will do big things. At the end of the day, even if Jay wasn’t the BEST RAPPER ALIVE, he would still be very successful for the simple fact that he is a shrewd business man and is always moving forward. (Everything in this life is always moving. If you stop for a single second the world keeps moving.) After all said and done I’m J-DUB THA GREAT and I’m out! Peace! – Roc Boy 4 Life
