RR’s ’09 Best Albums: #7 Eminem “Relapse”
Marshall Mathers returned to the rap game clean and sober but his mind was still on drugs. Relapse is chock full of references to seemingly every prescription your grandma ever thought of havin’ in her cabinet. Unlike any other MC on your iPod, Eminem is truly in his own dark and demented world. He’s poppin’ valium like ma dukes on “My Mom”, disintergrating babies on “Stay Wide Awake”, and chokin’ Lindsay Lohan with a sixty-six inch extension cord (“Same Song and Dance”). But my fondness for Slim Shady still lies more with tracks that fully display the wizardry wordplay of “Hello”, the booming “Medicine Ball” and the joyously jarring “Underground”, where like his later guest spots proved unequivocally, Em can still rhyme circles around your favorite artist. Deceptively effortless.

Yea, I see why this is on the list, but I didn’t really enjoy it. Least favorite Em album thus far. I dont care how well written the lyrics are, or how creative the flow is… the subject matter on 90% of this album is shock value bullshit. Ill take Em over Rick Ross any day, but as an ALBUM, DTR might be better
You guys only ranked Relapse at #7? WHAT!! Relapse is the #1 album for me. It’s the only album that actually made me get out my ass, go down to Best Buy, and buy it the day it dropped. Hadn’t done that since Encore dropped.

Agree with most of the folks on here. Eminem was nice as always, but this album just didn’t hit like his others did. I suppose it would seem strange to rate’s Em album worse than Ross’s but the truth is overall it was worse. Same concepts, same themes, same production,same lame first single as 5 years ago. “Crack a Bottle” “We Made You” and “Old Time’s Sake” are pretty unlistenable.
Nothing new, nothing great. “Underground” and “Stay Wide Awake” saved what would have otherwise been a bad album.
Relapse 2 will be good though. Knaan, Just Blaze, and some Dre on the production = dope.

I’m a Em for 4 real & this album had some dope tracks like same song & dance, hello, stay wide awake, but… we made you should be considered one of the worst singles of the decade not just 09.

One of the top lyricists but it was not my favorite album by Em.. I’m sure the R2 CD will not disappointment.

but relapse was, yes, better than encore….but worse than eminem show, MM LP, and Slim shady lp. where does that put it? …after all these years. it puts it at disappointment status.
and i think relapse two will be much better. he’s getting his feet wet again, back in the swing. he’ll correct his mistakes on part 2…

R2 I am sure will be a story telling album and bringing rap back to the 80’s with real shit and less bitches and beamers. Music these days has no content just word play you all need to step up your game and get rappers off the STREETS and in your labs!
I think wordplay and flow by Em are the best in the world, but I don’t like subjects he raps about. But on 7 new tracks I can hear some fresh music surprisingly not about killing women. So I expect Relapse 2 will be much, much better than Relapse.

People expected some lyrical shit before Relapse dropped. That’s why people hate on it. It was the exact opposite of what we predicted. I hated the album when it first came out but after it sat on my shelf for a couple of months I decided to listen to it again. Been bumping it ever since. Don’t get me wrong though, there are some songs don’t like. Despite being well written I could never get into 3 AM. Don’t know why. Insane is another one. That’s self explanatory. But overall it’s a solid album. It’s definitely not his worst. It’s better than Encore. Shit, people better just be glad he’s rhyming like this again. The past 4 years were shit. Don’t lie, Em’s 10x the rapper he was from 04-08.

Got to be honest didn’t like Relapse cd that much but I’m a fan so I was happy to hear that he was back into the game and giving the young ones something to learn from,and hopes that he will tour someday soon rather then nevermore.
