RR’s ’09 Best Albums: #8 Gucci Mane “The State vs. Radric Davis”

I’m a convicted card-carrying member of Team Snowman, but I must admit La Flare won me over this year. Yes, I enjoyed most of his seemingly endless collabos, but it was his album that truly surprised me. During an advance listen from Asylum’s Joey IE, I marveled at his new array of flows. Yeah, his lyrics still aren’t hip-hop quotable worthy but he sure puts them together well. Plus, he’s such a charismatic collaborator. Whether he’s gettin’ “Wasted” with Plies, actin’ “Stupid Wild” with Cam and Weezy or playin’ “Bingo” with Soulja Boy and Waka WTF, Radric remains the master of the ceremony. It’s cold the way the rap world decided to not support this album enough. Burrr!

  7. I LUV SHERM says:

“…Radric remains the master of the ceremony…”

Get the fuck out of here. Ain’t you from Queens?! What the fuck is wrong with you?! Sure his music rocks in the clubs but so does a Lil’ Wayne song… but Gucci is WACK!! TRASH!!

Oh wait… I forgot… Elliot sucks off rappers for a living. i remember the days of “pay for a cover” at XXL.

    C’mon son!!

  8. Nathaniel says:

    but i gotta say…

the nigga is wack, rapper wise. let me make that clear. straight up.

  9. Chipped Tooth Condition says:

  10. Toss says:

  14. Cunning Link Quest says:

This YN dude is more obvious than Flex dropping bombs…. MUST BE PAYOLA… BLOGOLA!!

    fuck this!!

  15. MisterUpgrade says:

YN…wow. I’m from Texas, born and raised; I grew up on 8ball & MJG, UGK, OutKast, Scarface. I am nothing short of appalled at this choice. I can appreciate all of us having our own opinion, but I just can’t comprehend the rationale. If the lyrics aren’t there, what are we saying? I know, I know, “Some music is to make you dance” or, “Music doesn’t always have to be cerebral”, but do we have to use that cop-out to justify promoting ignorance all the time? Maybe I’ve gotten too old and out of touch. But YN, I gotta take Lupe on his worst day, in an oxygen deprivation-induced coma, over Radric “Gucci Mane” Davis.

  16. mac DIESEL says:

    @ YN

WEEZY GOT U ON THAT SYZZURP NIGGA???? GET YA MIND RITE U HIGH YELLOW ASS NIGGA!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  17. 3Stacks says:

    @YN

A man of your calibre must have they ears tuned to better taste.Don’t lower the standard at least for the love of progressive hip hop(which i believe you used to stand for)

  18. Matt says:

Gucci was on his A game for this album. Production was tight (the usual suspects plus Mannie Fresh, Jazze Pha & J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League), his lyrics were stellar (Listen to “Gingerbread Man” and you can hear him getting lyrical) and he had a great collabo track w/ Devin the Dude, E-40 and Bun B. Not to mention the Ross feature was close to perfection. The singles didn’t do enough to showcase how he’s progressed.

Think about it: Both Complex Magazine and RapRadar.com put this album in their top 10 for ’09. Can’t be a coincidence (or blogola).

  19. BOSSupnugga says:

BURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!! LMAO!! THIS LIST IS HILARIOUS!! I DONT EVEN WANNA SEE 50 CENT OR JAYZ OR EMINEM ON THIS LIST WHICH WAS THEEE 3 HOTTEST ALBUM THIS YEAR..EM THEN 50 THEN JAY(CUZ HE WENT KINDA SOFT!! OF THE BP3)…EVEN RAEKWON….DONT PUT THESE CATS ON HERE THIS LIST IS FUKIN CRAP…KEEP IT GOING..9 WAS RICK FALSE, 8 GUCCI MANE, JUS ADD KID CUDI, WALE, YOUNG CORNY ALLSTARS FAT JOE, TRIPLE C’S ON THIS LIST

  20. MisterUpgrade says:

@Matt, I respect your opinion, but I can hardly fathom the word “stellar” & “Gucci Mane” in the same book.

  21. B. Digital says:

It wouldn’t surprise me if you got some really nice free shit **cough** and money **cough** from Asylum Records, and this is your way of paying back your good friend Joey and them.

In the words of Ed Lover…. C’MON SON!!!

  22. So Icy Boi! says:

Dis album a classic fuk dat HATERS u can ride and bump every song ..u got songz for da hoes then u got songz u can smoke too and some club bangers ………2010 its Gucci year when he get out BURRRRRR!!!………This album was way better than dat trash ass album “Before I Self Destruct and that pop/rock ass album Blue Print 3

  23. sohh.com says:

This blog aint been the same since 50 cent came through & aired YN out *waits for bisd to make top 5*

  24. Dashing says:

Yeah, this really should not have made the list. And him ahead of Mos is kind of a slap in the face.

  25. Matt says:

@MisterUpgrade Gucci has stepped it up a lot from “So Icy” and for a Southern MC, I’d still say it’s lyrical. Not like Punch & Words or anything, but he’s reached a pretty solid level.

@Dashing To me, Mos’ album was not cohesive. I’d say the Madlib & Oh No tracks were the highlight of a great album, but it jumped around too much for my liking.

  26. Over Mos??? WTF YN? I dig encouraging debate, but FUCK, at least make it something debatable. And yea, I know we’re not comparing artists, but albums, but still. No dice.

  27. SMH says:

how could this piece of audio trash be better than Deeper Than Rap??? Even Soulja Boy raps better than this dude…

  28. So Icy Boi! says:

Yall up north stay hating!! its 2010 and yall still on dat 09 hip-hop is dead bullshit ……I predict this year the south gonna take over again , just like for the past 5 years hahah

  29. united says:

haha, the best feature this dude had was on Pretty Girls with Wale,
    Actually sounded good.
Other than That i heard another song where he flowed well, dont know the name,

but the features YN mentioned were/ are WHACK AS FUCK.
this dude is whack as fuck, Trap/Swag Rappers of this kind are whack.

The album hasnt even went gold yet, and sold worse than Justin Bieber.
this nigga sucks. but at least he generated enough money to pay back all the advances from the other 5 or 6 albums that flopped.

THIS album CCC’s album and Fat Joe’s (LMFAO) Album Worst of the year..

Chris Brown has sold more and PLACES WERE NOT EVEN SELLING COPIES IN SOME PLACES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Joe says:

THis album in NO WAY was classic.

Fuckin Soulja Boys !st album will be consider classic (for all the wrong/bad reasons)

this wont be mentioned in 4 years

  31. Untied says:

LMFAO sold more than Gucci Gooch.

So Far Gone EP Sold more than Gucci’s album.

please tell me why an EP of songs you could already download, LITTERALLY AND LEGALLY,

was better, sold better than This album?

    CUZ THIS ALBUM WAS WHACK.

Id rather buy Eddie Murphy’s NExt Album.
Or Bill Cosby’s New Hip Hop Album

  32. @So Icy Boi!, I dunno if it’s a north/south thing, at least for me it ain’t. I’m from the Chi, so I fucks with a lot of what the south has to offer, but Gucci ain’t it. Dude is trash. He makes good trunk music, but def not album of the year worthy type shit.

  33. M85 says:

All I have to say is lyrically you can’t tell me gucci mane isn’t straight up trash when did this fool become an emcee?

  34. Cocoa says:

All yall came in here to voice the fact yall dont like him? why keep wastin energy on him? we get it yall think hes trash ok, we love his music and will continue too so just move on already

  35. Kid C-A-L says:

And it appears you lost the fight, B.Dot. Politics as usual.

  36. Facepalm says:

    Are you deaf?

  37. Benja says:

  39. JaySwag says:

what id like to know is how BP3 even made da top 10, with is ugly azz stealing verses n beats n ideas from everyone n takin credit for it, jay-z is fckin wack n i ish he cud read this! @ least Gucci write his own shit so he beats em wit dat alone

  40. this is where your credibility goes out the window RR. Is this really getting placement above Fashawn’s “BOY MEETS WORLD” or EdOG and Masta Ace’s ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT???? Did Gucci make a better album here than MOP’s FOUNDATION??? how about SLAUGHTERHOUSE or METH&REDs BLACKOUT 2???? sheeeeet, what about the Duckdown releases from TORAE, SKYZOO, KRS&BUCKSHOT????

i was cool with most of the list (outside of Relapse), but this one gotta go
