RR’s ’09 Best Albums: #9 Rick Ross “Deeper Than Rap”

Hip-hop’s top cop wasn’t taking any prisoners last year. In the midst of controversy and severe backlash, Ross was shielded by cinematic production and clever wordplay on his third time out. He tried to bury his comp with “Valley of Death” but seemingly brought life to “Maybach Music 2”. He kicked endearing fables (“Rich Off Cocaine”), taunted foes (“Mafia Music”), and laughed in the face of danger (“Gunplay”). With the odds against him, Rick proved that good music runs deep. Take note rappers. That’s a 10-4.

  2. I LUV SHERM says:

    c’mon son!

  3. My Nig Hussle says:

So Im guessing 50 album didn’t make the list

  4. Chipped Tooth Condition says:

is this just rap or is RnB covered too?

  5. koa29 says:

rap….except for alicia keys, because she did a song with hov, so of course YN is gunna jump on that

  6. Dashing says:

This album absolutely deserves to be on the list. Ross is not a great rapper but damn did he put together a solid album. J.U.S.T.I.C.E League and The Runners hooked him up and he did the damn thing. #9 is the right place for him. “In Cold Blood” “Yacht Club” and “Usual Suspects (featuring Nas)” were also fire.

  7. koa29 says:

    rihanna too, “Ha!”

  8. KingKong says:

agree with Dashing. say wat u want abt rick ross but the album was FIRE

  9. ReppinHard says:

I hope you guys don’t put 50’s album on this list over DTR #imjustsayin

  10. ok really says:

DTR was a dope album! Rick Ross put in work!

  11. koa29 says:

    BISD > DTR hands down….

I don’t like Ross as a person, he’s a fraud, but he can spit. I enjoyed deeper than rap to be honest.

  12. Chipped Tooth Condition says:

50’s album with the aggressive content that represents the actual harsh realities of his environment and the actuality of the reflection of his shit is better than DTR. #imjustsayin

    fuck this C.O
During a recent interview with AHH, new Def Jam signee Rick Ross reveals that he does not, in fact, know Noriega. The REAL Noriega:

AllHipHop.com: What did you mean when you said “Noriega owes me favors”? [Manuel “Manolo” Noriega, the Panamanian military leader who was tried and convicted for drug trafficking. He resides in a Miami federal prison]? What does that mean?

Rick Ross: Noriega owe a hundred favors, you know what I’m sayin’? It’s just like, you know, I kick it with [Pablo] Escobar nephew. He live down here. That’s my n***as, you know what I’m sayin’? So I just meant like, you know, real ties with real n***as. That’s what that meant. I don’t know Noriega personally, but I know n***as who have met Noriega. I know n***as who was in federal prison two, three cells down from Noriega. You know what I’m sayin’? And when I talk to them, I let ‘em know you know that’s something I meant to ‘em in the movies. I’m into s**t like that. So I’m gonna stand to that. That’s all that means.

It turns out that he does know the other Noreaga, which makes a little bit more sense. I remember that song was playing and my boy was all into it, and when Ross spit that line he repeated it along with him with mad feeling like he really believed it. I looked at him like, “You know he’s lying right?” and he was like “Oh nah, I know, but it sounds hot.” Sheesh.

But let’s forget about Rick Ross for a minute and talk about Busta’s verse on the remix to the same song. Good grief, have you ever heard such a flagrant pack of lies in your life?

“Whenever there is a drought and we need to place an order/I holla at Manuel or Escobar, Pablo’s daughter…”

Negro, stop lying. We all know you’ve been a rap star since you were like 19, so relax with the fake drug lord tales before the Grand Jury you’re about to sit in front of hears you talking that nonsense. I don’t know much about this Rick Ross dude, but I guess it’s possible that he’s moved some coke in his lifetime, but come on Trevor, who do you think you’re talking to here?

Catchy song though, I’ll give you guys that.

  14. cpmedia81 says:

when did we start giving props to frauds??? this nigga was a correctional officer telling your ass to lift up balls and cough. telling you when to go to bed and when to wake up. thats when u kno the game is fucked up. him and plies are big time fraud and making my gunshine state look bad. trick daddy need a http://www.thug.com relaunch

  15. B. Digital says:

It was a good album and deserves to be in the top 10 for ’09.

  16. OCHO V says:

“it deserves to be top 10 in 09” I don’t know about that. I would say atleast top five if we’re just talking rap. It’ll be interesting to see what else gets on this list cause say what u want about him as a person he raps circles around 50

  17. Nathaniel says:

honestly, top 10 of ’09? it definitely has a spot on there. the real riot is gonna start when we get to the top 5 or 3….hahahhaa, can’t wait for niggas to flip their lid.

heads up pups. expect to see BP3 in the top 3.

  18. QUEENZ says:

I’m sorry y’all but if it wasn’t for Nas on “Usual Suspects” I wouldn’t have heard a single song of this nigga’s shit. I’m fully aware of that fact that not every rapper keeps it 100% real but this dude takes it to the next level with his nonsense. As a result, I didn’t and never will listen to “Rick Ross” and his “coke rhymes that never took place”. He’s too much of an act, every interview I see him in, he’s always in character like some role in a cliche mob flick. Be yourself nigga cuz no one believes you.

  19. 3Stacks says:

    @B.Dot

Props to you for being objective enough to see past the b.s.DTR was a solid rap album and as much as it pains to admit Rawse is a superior wordsmith to 50.

To those calling Rawse a fraud that’s beside the point, dude can rap and make decent music too.If Hip hop as an artform was judged on keeping it 100 then most of your favorite rappers wouldn’t make it.Think about Rae for a minute…..no double standards.

  20. Kennedy says:

I wasnt even a fan of Ross until I heard this album. That shit was brilliant. Def top 3 albums I heard all year. And who gives a fuck if he was a cop. Its entertainment. Niggas need to grow the fuck up! Who believes any of these niggas anyway!

  22. You can’t name 7 albums that are legitimately better that Deeper Than Rap. Putting this at #9 is ridiculous and as a hip-hop aficionado as you claim to be, you should be ashamed of yourself – for real.

  23. Bayarea says:

Best album of the year in my opinion! still bumping it to this day!

  24. Cmon son! says:

Man!!! Gucci Mane’s album better than Ross?? T.I’s single is one of the worst singles?? Are you fuckin fo real dawg??? That single is better than all the gucci mane career! Fuck outta here.

  25. M85 says:

Minus everything else because I’m not a fan of either one…Rick Ross is bar for bar a better rapper than 50 cent…from jus a music standpoint. He jus is a better lyricist..but I’m not a fan of either do to me they cancell eachother out

  26. bk says:

    This is garbage rap !!!

  27. Kid C-A-L says:

Officer Bawsie’s album should have been higher up on the list. Politics as usual.

    right on!

  32. Chi-town says:

Good pick but I kinda think this should be higher on the list because this cd was hard. I laugh at a lot of you people saying he a fraud why don’t yall understand that more than half the rappers out don’t do the shit they talk about why you think they catch there first case after they get a deal. Rick Ross a fraud but yall believe 50 Cent went on a Crime Wave and killed 100 people?

  33. Drucifer says:

All the hype behind that gay ass beef, and neither Rick Ross or 50 cent went platinum……

  34. sloppy joes says:

hahahahahahahahhahhhhhhhhhhahaha i cant beilive this album of shit and relapse are on the same top 10 list

  35. ashamed says:

Wow. I need to find a new website… DTR was the same main stream bull shi*t that destroyed hip hop. There was no creativity no personal songs. His real name isnt even rick ross. I will go to another website from now on…

  36. anyone denying that this was a top 10 album of 2009 is dillusional. better yet, name me 10 where this doesnt fit in the list. Ross may have lost some integrity, but his music has only gotten better. Choice production, smooth flows, and he spitting game on there. I wasnt even a Ross fan until Trilla, and even then I had doubts, but DTR clearly showed that Ross got hitmaking potential and he can craft a stellar album.

imma spark one to cigar music in honor of…

  37. Jimbo Slice says:

He did have a dope album. But I’m still trippin on diddy’s commentary tho.

This was an amazing album, all your fat C.O. parodys and stupid bullshit are whatever but real music is real music. PLUS ON THE RAP BATTLE TIP ROSS BODIED 50, but at the end of the day 50s been bodied by everybody on the RAP TIP. 50 only “wins battles” with stupid videos and bullshit that have nothing to do with RAP. muhfuckas tryna tell me hip hop came from battling like 50 does. 50 DOESNT RAP HE MAKES A WHACK GARBAGE DISS TRACK TALKS FOR 5 MINUTES AFTER THE TRACK AND THEN SENDS BANKS AGAINST THE GUY ON THE NEXT TRACK. He’s only winning by making stupid blog videos all day.
