RR’s ’09 Best Mixtapes: #2 J.Cole “The Warm Up”

Before coming off Roc Nation’s bench, J.Cole runs practice drills on, The Warm Up. From the opening whistle, Cole declares he was ready for the big leagues on “Grown Simba” and proves he can handle his own over daunting tracks (“Dead Presidents II”). Elsewhere, he gives direction to black girls lost on “Light’s Please” while looking for the perfect match on “Dreams”. Then, over a calm horns, Cole lets hope float on “I Get Up” and “Dollar & A Dream II”. How’s that for a double-double? Standing O’vay!

Jermaine is the truth. This man is the future of hip hop. He embodies everything that has been missing in the game. PAY ATTENTION YA’LL – THIS KID IS GOING PLACES.

13 of the 22 songs on this tape have been on constant rotation on my TOP 25 MOST PLAYED song playlist on my itunes for the majority of this year.

    #ClassicShit

  3. The Dynasty says:

WOW!!!! WHERE IS WAR ANGEL?!?! I KNOW YOURE PUTTING DRAKE AT 1

  4. reef says:

I thought this would been num1 ova So far gone. The warm up had all new tracks but so far gone had a couple songs dat came out before the mixtape!!! But so far gone was my shit too.

  5. Right kid, wrong tape, IMO. The American Dreamin joint was just a head above this one. But like ThunderKush said, dude IS the truth. Can’t hate on the inevitable #1, cause it had such a far reaching impact, but I’m glad the #2 artist was spot on.

    So Far Gone
    American Dreamin
    The Prescription
    Enemy of The State

I agree about “How Fly” being in the top 5, those boys have amazing chemistry. THAT shit was damn near flawless front to back. Such a quality piece of work, perfect summer soundtrack.

  10. My Nig Hussle says:

Well deserved thought y’all would fuck it up with War Angel but you proved me wrong

Sidenote: I think you have to smoke weed to really understand Wiz Khalifa’s greatness

  11. AJB4 says:

  12. wow says:

    GTFOH….This site sucks
this tape is good that all

  20. B says:

Wiz Khalifa (flight school&how fly) not being on this list makes it irrelevant

  21. Nathaniel says:

    @So Icey Boi

c’mon bruh, the nigga is from fayetteville, NC…he’s a southern MC. and is THAT nigga to watch. and had the best mixtape of the year, Drake wouldnt be #1 with his shit if it weren’t for the success his brought him. THIS joint is, quality wise, better.

J.Cole has substance, he’s a lyrical beast, and most importantly HE ACTUALLY SOUNDS HUNGRY…he SPITS. something damn near nobody in rap sounds these days. …and he’s just a real, down to earth, everyday nigga. relatable as hell.

  22. Thatdude. says:

Everyday on the way to work and on the way home its either The Warmup or Enemy of the State. Jcole is the truth.

  23. Nathaniel says:

    @wow

…niggas aren’t bored with “dope lines” aka incoherent punch lines yet? i don’t see how niggas listen to punch line after punch line with no subject. just randomness.

    to each his own though.

  24. So Icy Boi! says:

  25. THUNDERKUSH says:

    @ So Icy Boi!

‘.Like Wayne will eat Gay-Z in a battle”

    #DoYouFoolsListenToMusicOrDoYouJustSkimThroughIt?”

if you think wayne can test Jay in a battle you should probably ran as fast as you can into the nearest wall.

  26. real910 says:

good shit bout time niggas give him some recognition.

finally sum1 tryna put us on da map

  28. Fuck So Icy Boi! says:

Don’t get me wrong, the boy Drake nice, but he ain’t fuckin J. Cole lyrically. I’m just sayin.

  29. so icy lick ass says:

yea he go around and put this video up all the time lame so icey

  30. Wayne eat Jay? Do you for real believe that or are you just saying inflammatory shit? Wayne got bars, but he’s not THAT guy. Gay-Z? Did you SEE the Carter doc?

    “Ohhhhh, my death. (tee-hee) I don’t think about that, that’s stuuuupid (tee-hee).”

“There was an incident where you shot yourself…” “Mmmmhmm.” “What can you tell us about it?” “Nuh-thin (tee-hee).”

    C’mon son.

  31. NuJEW says:

Because you are lyrically better doesn’t make you a better ARTIST

I like J.Cole’s mixtape alot but Drake’s mixtape was a CLASSIC.

  32. Fuck So Icy Boi! says:

NuJEW I never said J. Cole was a better ARTIST! I like them BOTH. I think J. Cole is better lyrically, but I think Drake is more creative.

  33. 3Stacks says:

If it holds true to potential and demeanor :

    Drake = Jay-z

    J.Cole = Nas

Nathaniel: why even respond to this fuckwit? He literally thinks Gucci Mane is >>>>>>>>>>>>> everything else right now. He also thinks OJ Da Juiceman is ill. I mean, c’mon son.

  35. Whowantwhat says:

Banks 5 or better series is better than this whole list pretty much..That’s why I be on my own shit. Hip-hop sites be all about politics and advertising!

  36. 216 says:

i hate new niggas. i wanted to like wale and cant get wit it, i wanted to like big sean, cant get wit it

drake is in a league of his own and j.cole is the only new nigga that earned my respect with a solid cd from front to back.ALL ORIGINAL….niggas not fuckin wit this guy, give em 2-3 years, niggas gone be dun dubbed him “great”

  37. slowbot says:

j cole and drake are both dope….i prefer the warm up ova so far gone but u cant hide the fact dat like 5 songs g from so far gone have hit the charts………there both lyrical but j cole’s are alot deeper than drakes….im pretty sure they will both have classic debut albums

  38. So Icy Boi! says:

@Dan STFU bum ass nigga ….niggaz make SN about me @Fuck So Icy Boi! @so icy lick ass ..lame ass niggaz it aint dat serious them niggaz J.cole and Drake still gettin money ..da same niggaz mad is da same niggaz dat be hatin on my nigga Gucci ..but them say that got the right to have they on opinions…..so i got my on IMO

  39. Interscope Employee says:

    shoulda been #1

  40. mcgeeview says:

I love both Drake and J. Cole. I think that the difference between Drake and J. Cole is their rapping style. Drake rapping style has a storytelling…looking @ his raps in an abstract form like I can picture everything he is saying/rapping but I’m not really emotionally attached to the song!
    J. Cole= Rapping style is based more on real/raw emotion……I can feel everything he is saying!

  41. bk42 says:

this is is joke J.Cole’s tape is way better than Drakes.. Drake’s tape is overrated,,,

  42. MisterUpgrade says:

I think the fact that there are two dynamic MCs on the come up is a positive for hip hop. It feels good to see them at the forefront of the new school. Who’s better than who, who cares? They’re both well rounded enough to have mass appeal & underground respect as lyricists, prototype MCs if you will.

  43. […] Before: RR’s ‘09 Best Mixtapes: #2 J.Cole The Warm Up […]

  44. Impossible is nothing says:

    niiiiiiicccccccceeee
    well deserved and drake also
even though i like cole better but So far gone everyone heard it cole is still unknown

  45. M85 says:

Somebody said it before ..j Cole being more real raw relatable hungry..if feel not only is he a better lyricist but s better artist because he can have a wider range of things to talk bout than drake..don’t get it twisted drake can definetly rap and is gifted but I don’t think his life experiences of living wit a rich mom in Canada and being on tv for a while can give as compelling a story as j cole’s humble grind

  46. Bryce Ayyy says:

uhhh DRAKE is NOT more creative.

Drake only makes more commercially acceptable music which is why he’s more successful than J.Cole.

J.Cole is better than Drake in every aspect, beside catchy chorus’. & that’s only because Drake can dabble in singing a bit to make his shit more groove worthy.
J.Cole’s lyrics and substance surpass Drakes by far.
Drake and J both have music you can relate too and they talk about everyday life and the struggles of being who they are.

It’s like talking to the niggas that you grew up with.

I like em both but J.Cole’s was better.but Drakes commercial success and targeted fanbase ‘the ladies’ is what allowed him to skyrocket to a more mainstream audience.

To the No-Ceiling dick riding hoe….’Traditional mixtape’..stupid ass.
a mixtape is a mixture of material on a tape/cd. Material can include original or re-done tracks.
So what about No-Ceilings makes it ANY more traditional than So Far Gone and The Warm up.
Sit down you clown ass nigga.

Hate niggas who ride Waynes dick and then feel like they can have an opinion on topics concerning hiphop when they have no knowledge of it.

  47. Ac@pella! says:

My favorite mixtape of the year. #1 to me and Drake’s is #2!

  48. Jay says:

now this truth right here… no complaint… none on his behalf…

but one thing that is really fucking with tho is him being signed under jay z…. i dont think this nigga know what with his artist…. he was 1st nigga sign to roc nation… he better than than most nigga out right now by far he produce his own shit too… why he is only features…. he should flow the game right now with mixtapes no? come on hov you didnt the samething to kanye whats up? wayne got 92 fuck little kid in young money and they getting major exposure…. man gget to work!!! should be it take over time!!!

  49. t-dub says:

drake and j.cole its a tuffy to decide which one.

  50. illaDeuce says:

at the end of the day just the fact that so far gone was like an ALBUM made it better. I’m from toronto I ride with drake all day but J. Cole is too ill. His mixtape had that album-like theme with the warm up, but it was a MIXTAPE with certain freestyle cuts and shit, while drake fully made an album.

  51. louTHEantagonist says:

    @My Nig Hussle

Cross your sidenote out…dont mention his name in here, no where near the talent of J. Cole…gtfo…J cole is the truth…niggas the next flaming rocket…

  52. roYalFlusH says:

“At times I wonder, when they listen to my shit, man can they hear my hunger?
or will these hatin ass rappers try to steal my thunder,
hey this is big shit poppin you gon’ need a plunger, to take me under “

  53. Blakout615 says:
