No stranger to the wrath of the Smoking Gun, Akon told MTV he still supports Clef’s charity despite the accusations levied at the Haitian MC yesterday.

“A lot of times, things like [critiques of Wyclef’s organization] are really irrelevant,” Akon told MTV News. “Because it’s obvious he’s trying to do good. Especially for Haiti, his loyalty to Haiti, you can’t really question. In the beginning his foundation was in the start-up stages and he had to get the team together, he had to find the right staff and crew that could actually handle those things. He had a lot on his plate. Naturally, of course, when you have a lot on your plate, you’re an entertainer and you’re moving around performing and doing humanitarian acts through the world, it’s gonna be hard to keep an eye on everything with your foundation. Some things are gonna slip through the cracks. But I don’t think that’s fair to put him under the gun for things like that because at the end of the day, you know where his heart is.”

Hopefully, Clef will speak on his own behalf soon.

UPDATE: No this isn’t Clef responding, it’s Yele President, Hugh Locke.

i think clef is phoning into whookid show today…..

  3. Joann says:

The Red Cross has had their share of controversy too, as a quick Google search will tell you. As a Haitian I am saddened to see Wyclef’s sincerity challenged. Before this earthquake, before Haiti was this big news story and before anyone else in the media gave a damn, Wyclef was the one speaking out for the people of Haiti. Now the media, and certain bloggers, who all have their own interests in mind and most likely won’t care about Haiti two weeks from now, will try to tarnish all the good work that Clef and Yele have done before this.

Yo. I know the MAIN reason people won’t denote is because they don’t want to put in the slightest bit of effort. If someone was coming door to door with a basket people would be more inclined. Well here is a VERY easy way to do it people:

Just TEXT the word “HAITI” to 90999 from an AT&T phone. If you don’t have at&t just give 10bones to your friend that has AT&T and do it from their phone.

    TOO easy.

    Continue to pray.

  5. Rhyme says:

^Of course, but people actually receive the aid in time of need. Red Cross are million times bigger then Wyclef. So taking money doesn’t actually drain their money pool. Wylcef is taking more than 30% of donation money for himself. I rather feed the big bank…..Not to say Clef isn’t doing do things with his Yele Organization. But alot of the money is going directly to him and his people.

  6. yaboitone says:

^The organization that does the AT&T donations IS REDCROSS and 100% of the proceeds go to the tragedy.

  7. Shawn says:

The Smoking Gun has shotty “reporting” at times as well. Most recently some fake docs and a fake informant wise guy.
And just FYI, while the Red Cross is a totally org. Only about 40% of your contributions go to those in need. The remaining is swallowed by admin cost.
As someone who’s tried to organize a non profit… It’s very difficult in th start up phase and loads of work is done free, which doesn’t always translate into the best.
If you question him, his efforts or his org… Get on a plane and go help.
And I whish Akon hadn’t even acknowledge this and let it die a natural quick death.

  8. Mithritades says:

when a nigga outdoing them crackers, expect the damn media to start slinging mud,Wyclef has been reppin for Haiti since a million years before this tragedy,he has been putting Haitis plight out there since fucking ARISTIDE been up to no good propped up by the US GOVERNMENT! what the fuck do yall expect the Machine gonna do to pay back Wyclef?…if ya’ll knew better,ya’ll would do better!

they try to portray the Red Cross as holier than thou smmfh…not to say the Red Cross is a worthy organization but come the fuck on!,let Wyclef contribute peacefully

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!!

  10. Da Business says:

Fuck what they’re talkin’ about, Clef has been rydin’ fo’ Haiti from the jump. I remember being young and reppin’ for Haiti wasn’t cool until the Fugees and the Zoe Pound came on the scene. Clef will continue to ryde fo’ Haiti even when everyone else stops.

  11. Da Business says:

    Props to Joann

co- sign to the 1st degree.

  12. Dee says:

Well can someone tell me where was the red cross when Katrina hit or ask any veteran they refuse to donate anything to the Red Cross. I believe Yele is a legal foundation and people are afraid that Wyclef will actually help the people (and not the Haitian government) get ahead for once. This man loves his country and I don’t believe he would do anything to take food from the country and people he loves so much! I myself have donated to both Yele and UNICEF
