Thursday, February 04 2010 3:42 PM EST | Posted by: B.Dot | Posted in: Blog, True Story

?uestlove took a snapshot today of this menu inside the NBC Studios cafeteria. Wha, no watermelon? Happy Black History Month, indeed.

UPDATE: Grio, spoke with NBC’s cook. Ignorance is bliss. Dig in.

  8. black people stop complaining !!!!!! says:

    ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  9. hip hop says:

nothing offensive about it, i hear plenty black people embrace that food, and whats wrong with it? its good as hell

  10. chillo says:

who cares? It’s not like they put KoolAid on the menu

  11. loveman15 says:

  14. L4U says:

So George Lopez isn’t complaining!!!!??? Some of us complain and some of us look at it like that’s HOLLYWOOD dumb shit happens.

  15. symone says:

We must stop being victims to ourselves..What is wrong wit this menu..Its in Honor of BLACK HISTORY MONTH …is this not the food of the south…we must learn to pick our battles and this aint one of them..
its not the blatant acts we must worry about its the ones that are systematic and the ones that we accept just because…..
Lets fight and shout for that which will bring change
Kuddos to NBC Studio for doing something for Black History Month and with a discount
My job gave us nothing and i work for a Black Company>>>>>i

  16. ssraheem says:

African Americans have got to be the only culture that is ashamed of it’s food. ?uestlove knows if he showed up to a black BBQ and they weren’t serving fried chicken, collard greens, cornbread etc the people there would be pretty fucking upset, so lets just cut the bullshit.

  17. SERIOUSLY says:

WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL? THEY MADE A MENU CONSISTING OF SOUTHERN FOOD…IF IT WAS SOME OTHER CULTURE MEXICAN, ITALIAN, CHINESE ITS FINE. BLACK PEOPLE ARE JUST TOO FUCKING SENSITIVE. ITS 2010 PEOPLE!

  18. van says:

what about may 5 or cinco de mayo, we dont fucken complain everywhere you go mexican shit…in honor of cinco de mayo enchiladas, horchata beans rice churos………..GET OVER IT WE DONT COMPLAIN
    ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

^^^ I’ll admit I was about to go of on a tangent but this is actually a good point. Because the office does order maad stereotypical “Latin American” shit when cinco de mayo rolls around. “African-Americans” have to stop pretending like we haven’t become another stereotyped minority (10% of the population last time I checked). You wanted inclusion well here’s what it looks like. If we stop pretending like we’re 50% of the population the grim statistics will start to make sense and scare the shit out of people and hopefully jolt them into action. Shit like 10% of the population 75% of the prison pop. 10% of the population but 75% of our young men don’t graduate high school. That shit is ridiculous and no one is saying shit. Fuck NBC but really, what do you expect?

What has the man done to make you as dumb as you are right now? (c)

  19. Toya says:

I would have been okay with the menu if it didn’t say “in honor of Black History Month” at the top because I know that black people aren’t the only ones that eat fried chicken, collard greens, dirty rice, and cornbread.

On a different note… What no Kool-Aid or mac n cheese?

  20. B.Dot says:

You people are clearly not black. it’s offensive because in “honor of black history month”. Why couldn’t there by a lobster or filet minion?

  21. ssraheem says:

    ^
And Italians are the only ones who eat past, pizza etc but when you think Italian food those are the first things that come to mind and Italians don’t find it offensive.

  22. kofi says:

    @B.Dot

Come on man. You know the black people are associated with those foods so why is offensive to serve them for black history month. If on July 4 they served apple pie, hamburgers and hotdogs you wouldn’t be offended as an American would you?

  23. B.Dot says:

    ^
    That’s just ignorant.

  24. kofi says:

    @B.Dot

How? What’s the difference. Are you saying black Americans haven’t been eating and serving those foods for the last couple of hundred years. I could understand if something was inaccurate but it’s not and you know it. Let’s take it to another level if that sign had been hanging in the BET cafeteria would it be just as offensive? The fucking thing I hate about our culture is we are so quick to call someone or something racist. I understand this country has a deeply racist history but getting upset over something like this which points out a FACT makes us look silly and takes away from the relevance of truly racists things that happen everyday.

  25. So Icy Boi! says:

Its not a big deal….. then it is a big deal … so you tryna say black people they only people dat eat chicken and soul food???

  26. dickinyamom says:

Ya’ll a bunch of content house niggas that totally miss the point of the perception of racist stereotypes that are being put for. First of all the idea of “Black History Month” in itself is racist to me because why does our history have to be alienated and separated from the rest of history by giving us the shortest month of the year and doing mediocre tributes. How bout you make it a mandatory part of the educational system year around instead of teaching our children about a bunch of slave owners who got praised for taking credit for other people’s work. So you house niggas continue to brush off subliminal jabs and be “ignorant” as B.Dot pointed out. We all don’t identify with soul food so don’t automatically assume it as cultural to black people, just like there are hispanics who don’t eat rice and beans. Here’s a good question..what the fuck do white people eat then?

  27. Chris says:

I dont think the intention was to offend. Like clearly the canteen thought making soul food would be a nice way of honoring Black History Month. The problem is African Americans are so scarred by their own history of slavery and sterotype, we cant even understand or distinguish a compliment from a side diss.

  28. B.Dot says:

    @kofi

    ^
Clearly you don’t get it. First off, NBC doesn’t speak to Black America. If that menu was in a BET office, it would be equally as offensive..if not worst.

The items listed have sterotypical ties. i doubt that menu would be posted for women’s sufferage month or anytime commemorating a signifcant period.

  29. RICH1 says:

I GUESS IF IT WOULD SAY ” IN CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH” IT WOULD HAVE BEEN OKAY …..??

  30. van says:

B.Dot, I’m not saying the shit isn’t offensive because it definitely is but I am not surprised in the least. The really fucked up thing about this is the amount of racism that went in to creating something like this. This poster actually making it to printing is fuck the fuck up. The menu had to be approved, sent and approved again, the fucking food had to be ordered and approved, the poster had to be created and approved. somebody had to get a easel for the fucking menu poster. Now you can’t tell me that through all that bureaucracy a “black” person didn’t see this and put the breaks on. gtfoh. Any black person that works for nbc should be ashamed of them selves. I know ? was like wtf.

Here’s what they think about you (c)

  31. NuJew says:

WHERE DEM CHITTLINS AT? (j/k or not j/k lol)

BTW, Black Americans and African American are basically two different things.

I really hate when people call black people who are of slave descent AFRICANS or AFRICAN AMERICAN. I find that really offensive.

  32. RICH1 says:

STOP COMPLAINING…COMPLAIN ABOUT EVERYTHING, JESSE JACKSON IS GONNA SHOW UP NOW ON SOME BOOTLEG CONFERENCE. ” IN CELEBRATION OF CINCO DE MAYO” TAMALES, ENCHILADAS, BEANS YELLOW RICE, CARNE ASADA….WE DONT COMPLAIN AND WHAT MAKES IT WORSE THERE MEXICAN FLAGS EVERYWHERE ALL THE BARS AND FOOD PLACES. TO TOP IT OFF BEER IS SOMEHOW AFFILIATED WITH CINCO DE MAYO. YOU DONT SEE PEOPLE DRINKING 40 OZ ALL MONTH…GET OVER IT B. DOT AND FRIENDS, YOU GUYS ASK FOR TO MUCH, COMPLAIN ABOUT EVERYTHING

  33. Brooksie says:

I think you all should ask the one question that needs asked first. “Who decided on the menue?” If there ass was black would it then be ok then if it was a white ass that decided? Research before you go all racist as maybe a couple of niggas as you all say decided on the menu.

  34. van says:

Once upon a time, a woman was picking up firewood.

She came upon a poisonous snake frozen in the snow.

She took the snake home and nursed it back to health.

One day the snake bit her on the cheek.

As she lay dying, she asked the snake, “Why have you done this to me?”

And the snake answered, “Look, bitch, you knew I was a snake.”

    (c)

  35. Toya says:

I agree with dickinyamom. European history is taught up the ass in school but when February rolls around, all of a sudden people want to be ethnically diverse. It’s sickening. It’s just so messed up to me that we have soldiers dying in countries that most Americans can’t even find on a map.

Black History Month is seen as a month to “keep the peace” but how many people know that there is a Hispanic Hertiage Month (September) or an Asian Heritage Month (May)? Not many because “Oh, we have to please the blacks.” Sorry but this black person will be pleased when everyone stops with the compartmentalizing of ethnic groups. Several different groups of people came together to create this country so they should get equal respect instead of just token days.

  36. For the cats that don’t find this remotely offensive or a big deal or whatever, what about when Tiger first won the Masters? Remember when Fuzzy Zoeller came out his face and said he’ll prolly serve fried chicken and collards etc at the dinner? This is the same shit.

I understand cats tend to be hypersensitive, but this ain’t one of those times.

  37. palacecouncil says:

just dumb. not racist. just dumb.

  38. Kofi says:

    @B.Dot

“The items listed have sterotypical ties”

Really? type the term “traditional African american food” into Google and tell me what comes up. Every culture has food that is associated with them it’s not racist or inappropriate to point it out. Pasta and pizza have sterotyepical ties to Itialians but I didn’t hear those people complaining about the food they ate on the Soprano’s. You say sterotyepical as if there is no truth attached to what they are saying. What you are really saying is it’s only racist if a person of another race points things like this out. The movie Soul Food featured almost ever single item on that menu yet no one was up in arms because 1 black people(not all maybe not even a majority but a significant amount) eat those foods and 2 the movie was made by black people. Isn’t that a double standard?

  39. e20 says:

Im an African American and these are the foods you can find at my house or my relatives house on Thanksgiving, Christmas, After funerals, after church, at family reunions, etc. There is nothing wrong with that menu except the lack of yams or sweet potatoe pie.

If it was Asain American month and they had orange chicken and egg rolls or Italian American month and they had Spaghetti, and pizza no one would bat an eyebrow.

  40. Trecherous says:

OMFG!!! IN THIS DAY AND AGE PEOPLE ARE FINDING THIS OFFENSIVE?? BLACK PEOPLE WANT RECOGNITION AND WHEN ITS GIVEN TO THEM ITS NOT ENOUGH. SOMEONE SAID WHY NOT LOBSTER OR FILET MIGNON??? HOW IS THAT CULTURALLY DEFINED? WHO WILL PUT OUT HAMBURGERS AND HOT DOGS FOR LATINOS? OR PIZZA AND PASTA FOR ASIANS??? TO ALL THOSE WHO ARE OFFENDED USE SOME FUKING COMMON SENSE. IF YOU WANT TO BE SOOOO EXCLUSIVE AND DEMAND TO BE SOOOOOOOO RECOGNIZED, KNOW YOUR HISTORY. THIS IS STRAIGHT SOUTHERN FOOD !!! WHY BE ASHAMED??? I DONT NOT BELIEVE THAT BLACK AMERICANS HAVE GOAT OR GAZELLE MEAT IN THEIR HOMES EVERY NIGHT FOR DINNER LIKE AFRICANS. WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN OFFENSIVE IF KFC OR MCDONALDS WOULD HAVE BEEN THE MENU…THATS A STEREOTYPE PEOPLE!!LEARN TO DISTINGUISH CULTURE VERSES YOUR OWN PERSONAL HANGUPS.

  41. SkidaRoc says:

I’m from North Carolina and I ain’t never read no crap like that. It’s not in a hick town building folks, this is NYC where you would think folks would know better in 2010.

  42. M85 says:

    @bdot
i feel u man the amount of checks and the amount of times that people said “yea great idea” is the crazy part…the whole in honor of black history month title makes it bad as well..I’m not saying that I don’t eat these foods..but to hold them up as a symbol of history month when food is often used as a tool of ridicule to black people is just poor judgement..it jus looks like a mockery as if after the food they were gonna show Benny Goodman clips and call him the king of jazz

  43. Obama says:

I posted a comment on here earlier, and these hypocritical scumbags deleted it… Get off your high horses people… Yes it IS Black History Month… Yes we DO eat that shit (let’s ignore the fact that our diets contribute to our ignorance for the moment)… The woman who made the menu IS BLACK!!! Not some evil white devil hiding behind a curtain you fools… She understood the simple act of trying to give people what they want to eat, and the food that is (RIGHTFULLY) associated with our culture, in honor of Black History Month… Hey I have a great idea… Let’s stop the half-assed debate, and all of us, black, white, hispanic, asian, whatever can meet down at the local fast food spot… Fucking jack-asses, eating Mc Donald’s (supporting the white corporate elite) and smoking cigarettes (supporting the white corporate elite) but they all wanna get worked up when someone suggests that black people eat fried fucking chicken…

  44. Van Sertima says:

Soul Food has a lot of uncomfortable ties to slavery, jim crow and poverty. It is not to be made for your fucking office function. This is a personal culture that many are still coming to terms with after 400 some odd years. This is as offensive as it is insensitive, “black” people still don’t want this personal culture on display and made to be a mockery of with stereotypical ideologies and bad “black” jokes. Regardless of what you “think” you know about “back” people, “black” american culture is still very much a closed culture. This food comes from hard times, created during survival times and isn’t for outsiders or their fucking superficial office celebrations.

  45. M85 says:

^^@ van sertima…word…because something like this can cross over so quickly into black jokes..yes alot of us eat what is known as soul food but we also know that this food came from a time when we were given unhealthy and unwanted scraps..so no matter how much someone might think it’s a joke the food serves as a lasting reminder of slavery…1864 was not that long ago

  46. Come on now says:

How is that fucked up?…..arn’t those foods all traditionally found in black house holds (well in some form, not so much jalapeno cornbread). If they had a Mexican day and served tacos would that be fucked up? Jokes aside about fried chicken, it’s still a traditional black American food, so are greens, cornbread etc….

  47. BE says:

    Doesn’t bother me.

  48. B.Dot says:

Again, nothing is wrong with the food listed. What’s offensive is that its in tied to black history month as if that’s some kinda Black delicacy.

  49. The Truth says:

Niggaz is WAY too emotional nowadays!! Frontin like this isn’t part of their regular diet!! Smh, they shouldve had sushi, Pasta & green tea instead!!

  50. Lay says:

BLACK history month is not SOUL FOOD history month. There is a diverse side to Blacks, not every black person in America is AFRICAN american. Black history comes in all forms all around the world.
Americans need to educate themselves more and if you are not black, please dont question why we are upset. You will never be in our shoes.
This is underlying racism, if you dont see it then please check your history.
As Laurence Fishbourne would say “WAKE UP”
