Jay Electronica Addresses Controversial “Exhibit C” Line

“When New York niggas were callin’ Southern rappers lame but then jackin’ our slang”

During his first time at Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg’s Hot 97 morning show yesterday, Jay Elect explains that the above line ain’t a diss, but rooted in personal experience. Hey, if the truth hurts, you’ll be in pain.

Not trying to be funny, but I don’t get why that was the only piece of the interview they play. I get that it’s morning radio, but think about it: we have a new artist to the hip-hop scene, with a pretty dope record getting the Hot 97 stamp. Instead of trying to be like “oh, so you’ve been with Badu for a while” or “oh you got all these co-signs” or just trying to get his story… we focus on a line that wasn’t truly controversial until they put that spin on it? How many heads REALLY tripped over that line before they interviewed him?

I’m just saying. Seems trivial when there’s bigger things at stake. But again, it is morning radio.

    *sigh*

  21. Blakout615 says:

    Co sign Jay Elect
Its not really a big deal but he IS telling the truth.

But on a side note,it amazes me at how many ppl are so ignorant to southern HIP HOP that they think we actually only have like 5 good mc’s down here LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO. Out of 11 or so states, only TIP,Luda,Outkast,& Face are nice?????? If u do ur research u wud see that we have PLENTY of talent down here. But just like alot of good NY artists,it doesnt get put on display as much. Hopefully this yr we can change that.

  22. SERIOUSLY... says:

Jay Electronica sounds just like an East Coast rapper…so who is jocking whose style!!!???

  23. FoSHO says:

Some of you guys need to cop some OUTKAST ASAP!!!!!

  24. van says:

    The line is absolutely true.

  25. Nathaniel says:

the truth hurts u bitch niggas.

its a lot of shit out of new york that influenced the south. BUT, WE ALWAYS BUMPED YALL SHIT. ALWAYS. he said yall was CALLING US LAME, BUT THEN JACKIN OUR SLANG <——-see the contradiction in that? we bump, pay homage to good music, embrace any real nigga from up north and the dirty south still maintains its "dirty south"ness….BUT FOR YEARS, niggas up north were like east coast supremacists.

so the issue isn't whether or not the south is influenced by the north or not, the issue is that we always showed love, while yall trashed us and then jacked the fuck out of our slang. and to the nigga that said holla back wasn't from the south, nigga they were saying that shit in new orleans when juvenille was a lil nigga, BEFORE HA. fuckouttahere.

truth hurts. you can deny a lie but you can't deny the truth.- Khujo Goodie. ain't shit to argue about. the nigga said some REAL SHIT and backed it up like a REAL NIGGA. like and what?

  26. Nathaniel says:

    @Blakout615

the issue is, the way hip hop is structured, the only way you get labeled as “nice” most times when you’re a southern mc is when the east coast sees traces of qualities they can identify their own rappers with. but i say fuck that. we don’t rap like yall do. period. niggas like

khujo, t-mo, big gipp, pimp c, project pat, trick daddy, cool breeze, witch doctor, trae, z-ro, juvenile, etc all had stories to tell with their own cultural, southen or country influence. and none of them niggas have east coast type lyricism, but they “hate what they don’t understand” like nas said in hate me now. you don’t have to nigga…bump a jay-z record and eat a dick. we STILL bumpin our artists. and the hate u give isn’t strong enough, cuz we still run shit….i’ll add

8ball & MJG, UGK, Outkast, Backbone, Pastor Troy, T.I.

J.Cole and Little Brother have east coast influence…but do we say “ugh they wack!”. NOPE. in the south we just have ears that can feel and appreciate music from every coast. the east coast has a knack for needing shit forced down their throats before they can appreciate it. *bumps lil boosie*

  27. iLL-uminated says:

    G>T>F>O>H
I disagree with the Jay line…
I dont think ive ever heard a NY cat “jack” southern slang?..
Please Post if youve ever heard that on a track….
please do not include any “dj webstar or Jim Jones” cuz i have no respect for them to begin with.

I bet if you ask jay-elec whos his top 5 fave mc’s, He’ll say 95% of them are from NY
    Hate My Opinion.
    (im from the chi)

  28. Broke Iz A Disease says:

He’s buggin, but I could care less. For example dudes up north never used/use Trap/Grill/Candy Paint etc.

Rappers bite each other period. Like when Snoop or E-40 (no clue which started it) started the whole izzle/dizzle/nizzle/ fo shizzle bullshit. Now rappers be using that shit and that’s a old example.

  29. Dashing says:

    @ iLL-uminated

I’m from NY but it’s definitely true. NY rappers jacked the slang and the style. The best example is 50 cent’s “Get Rich or Die Tryin” Try listening to Wanksta and tell me that’s not s Southern-style beat, with a southern flow, and southern slang.

And now dam near every rapper from NY has southern style beats and features on their albums (Jadakiss, Fat Joe, Fabolous, Busta).

It’s not a problem, but Jay Elect is right to point it out. NY influences the south. The south influences NY.

Btw, a lot of African-American slang is rooted in the dialect that black slaves in the south used so in a way this has been going on for over a century.

  30. Blakout615 says:

“in the south we just have ears that can feel and appreciate music from every coast. the east coast has a knack for needing shit forced down their throats before they can appreciate it.”

Real shit. Thats that Southern hospitality right there. For yrs we showed love to up north (yall think niggas like DMX was going double platinum off of NY sells alone??) but still didnt recieve none back. I remember wen we had to force the industry door down in ’03.THATS wen dudes decided they officially wanted to fuck wit us. Niggas in the source magazine damn near beggin for a lil jon beat(i aint namin names). Dudes didnt know Andre3k cud rap until the “walk it out” remix,WTF??? See thats due to them not showin respect for so many yrs & they was even blind to that fact. Even with Jay Elect, ppl hear him rap & u see comments like “wow sumbody in the south can actually spit”. I just SMH @ it.

  31. KP says:

maybe I’d respect it if he wasn’t ridin’ the beat of an east coast producer on the track

  32. KP says:

furthermore, its just a line. he know wassup. the dude’s label is in NY, probably recorded the track in NY, the beat is by a NJ producer, and the reason the song is buzzing is because NY djs are supporting (hot 97) and blog sites like this one (based in NY) are promoting it. Dude is always doing shows in NYC. you think N’awlins turnin out at shows for this cat? hell no. I get he got southern pride, it its smart to not ruffle the feathers of the area that supports you the most. he;s smart enough to clarify his statements.

and you never heard a southern cat with that type of flow and believe east coast aint influence their style. To say that would be ass dumb as Lupe saying Q-Tip didn’t influence his style and he was listening to Spice ! growing up. Oh, wait…

  33. Nathaniel says:

the east coast even got mad at lupe cuz he said he didn’t listen to tribe called quest growin up, he listened to ugk, 8ball and mjg, and spice 1.

like there’s an east coast prerequisite…canon, that each artist has to be familiar with before they can get respect. “he should atleast have the decency and respect to go listen to midnight marauders!” fuckoutta here…how many of yall know Ridin’ Dirty front to back? exactly.

    and @Dashing

the shit you said about the slaves in the south is very true. it’s that cultural retention. the plantations were bigger and more plentiful, which led to higher levels of exclusivity wen it came to slave to slave interaction. in the north, especially when industry picked up, that dormant african ancestry didn’t manifest itself to the degree that it did in the deep south.

  34. Nathaniel says:

    @KP

lupe don’t sound like q-tip. if you hear both them niggas speak in an interview, you hear a similar tone, voice wise. but lu ain’t nearly as nasal as tip. as for flow, delivery, etc etc, i hear MUCH more nas, jay-z, and even biggie in lu (early lu, he was biggie’d out). he and tip are cool on some islam shit, and everybody else was mad except THAT nigga. i really don’t see why it is niggas can’t accept that. shrug*

and jay-elec wasn’t dissing yall niggas. he was telling a story of what was happening, shit he saw. you call niggas lame and wack, then u jack from them…all simultaneously. <—thats whats crazy. the south wasn't calling yall niggas lame, then jacking from u. we were then, and always have been, bumping yall shit, saying it was dope, and letting the influence fall where it may. thats the point.

  35. YaBoiTone says:

AGAIN people miss the point. Jay WAS NOT saying that being influenced by different people is a bad thing, because its NOT!

HE WAS SAYING that ITS WRONG to CONTRADICT YOURSELVES and BE HYPOCRITES by INSULTING an entire group of artists and then turning right around and borrowing what they do. And the FACT that NY niggaz borrowed from down south niggaz ALOT is 100% TRUE. It’s just that alot of NY niggaz are so pompous that they genuinely believe that they are the originators of EVERYTHING. lol.

  36. So Icy Boi! says:

New York niggaz swagger jackers haha …50 Cent in the club, wanksta. p.i.m.p. ….all dem was south beats 50 cent how south swag ….NY niggaz copy cats

  37. Da Business says:

Some of y’all r buggin, I’m from Miami and tho I feel that Ross is a lyin’ sack of shit. Dude will out rap @ least 85% of the rappers eout of NY.

Look, I’m a true hip hip head and can listen to any mc from Joell Ortiz to J. Cole to even Project Pat. It’s all subjective to the individual. Bcuz I’m from Miami I was expose to everything musically, so in general I feel we have a greater appreciation for music than the east coast.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the east coast and I understand that NY is the birth place, but NY isn’t the only place that carries hip hop. To be honest w/ u outside of Jay, Nas, and even 50 the best hip hop lp’s of the past decade have come out of the south and the mid west.

Every region is infuence by the other, but the difference is Ny won’t(for the most part) admit that they got some swagg form another region.

Bottom line is there r wack rappers in every region, not just the south.

  38. Post no billz says:

Well lets keep it 100. Most new yorkers have no love or no respect for any music that aint from nyc. Which is fucked up cus cats all over the u.s. Love ny rap.

  39. NotoriousRambo says:

HE’S RIGHT IT GOES BOTH WAYS AS FOR JAY I’M ANTICIPATING “ACT II: THE TURN” I THINK NAS FINALLY SENT HIS VERSES SO THE ALBUM CAN BE DONE DAMN KELIS HOLDING SHIT UP

  42. DawoduInc says:

Ok ok ok. Why all the hate? We all love hip-hop. If not people would not catch feelings, right? But here is the thing: People think dude is not a “champion of men”? ok, I feel ya. I really really do. You dont have to listen to everyone you hear right? I do not jam everybody (neither should you). ummm. However, the FACT is that one of the best MC’s of all time is trying to HELP everyone. Q: How many FREE songs has your Fav. rapper dropped in the last 10 yrs? I mean bomb hits! Then turn around and have the same songs sold? (Only southern peeps uh?) Oh yea the Man’s biggest pushers are dudes you would get butt-ass-naked-4 *For-Real! TRU talk, i wish yall would write and say nah i ain’t going to roll wit NAS/CreativeContol(DDStudio)/JUSBLAZE/even ditty!(Trust! 1 can go on) Com’on Son! It’s a line that went over the heads of those that don’t know; so get to know(If you want HATE). He is moblizing the PEOPLE Trust me FAM, where ever you are south/east/west/north FREEDOM is coming your way!

  43. clos1881 says:

@OJ shut your dumb ass up thats like saying micheal jordan jacked kobe still or better yet JA jacked 50 still.

  44. clos1881 says:

@Will your another arrogant ignorant typical up north nigga first off holla back came from down here fuck nigga as well as several other phrases. its amazing to me how irrelevant new york is right now musically and you motherfuckers still have the nerve to talk shit likewho is the future of new your rap maino, uncle murder, cory gunz, whose carrying the torch besides nas or jay ? I like Cam he done though 50 is done jim jones thats one of yall biggest character flaws is that when your born in NY you come out the womb a hater in all aspects of music and sports yall think yall the shit but really its a lot of hype but nothing behind it

  45. Noles506 says:

lol @ the same morons arguing about the same shit everyday on here….go get a fucking job.

  46. Will says:

@Clos1881 Im 4rm Cali cuz but I know my history

you rapping you swagjaccing New York Plain and simple Saigon said it along time ago in an interview when they asked hi do you feel new york rappers are swagjaccing Southerners and he said by a nigga even rapping you swagjaccing New York thats real talk rite there all the ealry stage of hiphop is New York GangBanging/Modeling and Acting and shit thats LA but Rapping Wise if you rap theres at least 2 MCs from new York thats going to be in yo top 5 when there should be 3 thats real talk

By a Nigga even rapping you swagjaccing New York My nig the truth hurts

  47. Will says:

What I said is like saying Lebron James is the best basketball Player rite now you m ay not like it but its the truth my nig it took damn near ten years for another region to blow up in Hiphop and it wasnt the south that mean that new yorkers all alone was holding this rap game down for 10 fuccing years thats like blacc people holding down basketball for ten years without no other race and you have to enough respect for the game thats why you niggas and that nigga Jay Elect is hostile when speaking on the situation becuz its the truth without Sugarhill Gang niggas wouldnt even be rapping

  48. KP says:

shit, it don’t make me feel any type of way. Everyone jacked E-40 slang. Shizzle, nizzle. Hip hop is one of the most plagiarist forms of music, so its humorous to feel like someone is “jacking someone else”

  49. Kurt GoBang da2nd says:

i thought i would have something to say on this when i first hit the comment tab, especially with what he said being so true (the music speaks for itself. anyone who says different is blind, deaf, and dumb as fuck). but after reading the comments, it reminds me who i would be commenting to and so i’m just going to say my thoughts reflect jay’s and if you feel otherwise (like saying 50 didn’t sound like he had a southern twang on grodt #crackhead), all i have to do is play a song from ny rapper, then play a song they made after the south blew up and that ny rapper wanted to get in on that down south money. it ain’t hard to tell…

  50. Smoochy127 says:

THE SOUTHERN NIGGAS ALL WAYS THROWIN SHOTS AT NEW YORK NIGGAS ITS ALWAYS THE SOUTH -VS- NEW YORK NOT THE EAST COAST! BUT ANY WAY THE SOUTH AND THE EAST COAST BEEN AT IT FOR YEARS BUT THE THING IS NEW YORK RECOGNIZES GOOD MUSIC WE DONT ALWAYS GOT A LISTENIN EAR FOR SOUTHERN ARTIST OR UNDERSTAND RAPPERS LIKE SHORTY LO SOLDIER BOY AND RAP GROUPS LIKE GS BOYS WHO PRODUCES TRASH AND HAS NO SECURE FUTURE IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS BUT JAY ELECTRONICA CANT BLAIM HIS LAK OF EXPOSURE ON NEW YORK BKUS IT REALLY DONT MATTA WHER U FRM IF U HOT U HOT LOOK AT WEEZY HE FRM THE N.O AND BEEN HOT FOR YEARS NOT ONLY HIM NEW YORK KNO THE HOT BOYS MEMBERS I WAS FEELN JUVY MASTER P AND THM HAD A RUN ALSO/BUT NEW YORK RECOGNIZE GOOD SOUTHERN ARTIST LIKE T.I LUDA JEEZY AND GROUPS LIKE THREE 6 AND OUTKAST DNT BLAIM US BLAIM YASEDLF U SHUDA BEEN LOOKN FOR BABY AND THM IN NEW ORLEANS THE REASON WHY THE SOUTH HAD A LONG RUN BKUS WE WASNT TRYNNA ACCEPT THAT CANDY RAP BUT JUST LIKE NEW YORK DO WE ADJUST AND THN CONTINUE TO DOMINATE BEKUS QUALITY MATERIAL HAS LONGEVITY AND MAYBE U CAN BE LIKE A JAY- Z NAS 50 CENT AND GROUPS LIKE THE LOX DIPSET TERROR SQUAD THATS Y U WUD WANA SOUND LIKE A NEW YORK NIGGA BUT I WAS DIGGN EXHIBIT C BUT THATS AS BIG AS THAT DUDE JAY ELECTRONICA CAREERS GONNA GET PLUS SON DNT EVEN SOUND LIKE A N.O NIGGA NOT A LIL

  51. The Editor says:

Spoken Word, the art of story telling, NY Rap, Boom Bap, truth be told the best selling artist still come out of NY, with all the hyperbole about southern rap and how they selling, the years Best selling rap is usually a NY artist, it was 50 and Jay for a long time, T.I. snuck in there and than it was Kanye, he from the Chi but lyrically he is a NY’er that is where he honed his skills, same with J. Cole and Jay Electronica, dude sounds 100% like he from NY, the only reason I know he from N.O. is because he said so, Em is the top seller of 09, who you think influenced him, not Dre, please, he sounds nothing like them dudes, he is the lyrical son of Redman and he use to run around Newark with the Outsiders and Rah Digga for a minute on the spittin tip, East Coast Rap is different it is more thought, more craft, not the outcomes of doing music but just doing, it has become the outcomes as of now, with the love of everything bling, but sooner than later, it will go back to the spit, Jay Electronica is showing that along with Wayne and Hov and Em (Its funny people speak about the way people spitting and nobody wants to hear that, but the highest selling MC’s for the pass few years have been Wayne, Jay, Em, 50, T.I. Kanye, say what you want about 50 but the boy spits, so cracken may be cool and the Trap may be fun, ask these dudes who their favorites are, and it all leads back to one, RAKIM

    THE EDITOR

  52. clos1881 says:

@Editior so now you taking credit for people’s influence you just said the biggest selling artist come out NY and you named two southern rappers. As a whole the south is moving more units then NY this article was not saying the south isn’t influenced by NY, it saying thay NY hates on the south but copy are slang and if you wanna keep it all the funky buisness wise Master P and Cash Money raped the game. Go to any hiphop site and I gurantee its some NY nigga hating on the south you don’t see that with the other regions thats why I personally consider most NY niggas natrural born haters not everyone but most.

  53. Lyle says:

@OJ: You obviously have never set foot down South. Most of 50’s slang is Southern. Example: Fina. I’ll use it in a sentence. I’m “fina” go to the store. 50 uses “fina” and many other Southern terms all the time. Truth be told though, Jay Elect sounds like an East Coast rapper to me. Even the beats he uses are East coast inspired (90’s era to be exact). I see why Nas co-signs him. He sounds just like him. Talkin’ all that 5% shit. No disrespect to the 5%, but niggas down south ain’t on that. And for those who might think the South is ONLY about glorifying jewelry and rims, you obviously don’t know your history. Words of wisdom to Jay Electronica: If you don’t gain the respect of the people in your own background, you will never make it to the top.

@Smoochy: Sorry to break it to you my nigga, but the East coast will never take it’s thrown back. Now I will say that they will always have a strong presence in the game, but never will the East coast “reign supreme.” Obviously I’m a nigga from the South (Miami to be exact), but I do know my history…East to West coast/early 80’s-present. The real reason the East coast lost it’s reign is because y’all were to close minded. If it weren’t from NY/NJ or had that certain ’70 infused sampled beats y’all weren’t trying to hear it (or call it hip-hop). The South, Midwest and West had no choice but to move on. Why you think we all get along so well? You did it to yourselves. The only reason some of these NY artist have lasted as long as they have is because they had enough sense to do more national collabo’s. Example: Jay-z reached out to UGK. Joey Crack has been working with so many Southern artist he even moved to Miami. BTW, The Lox ain’t doing shit. Even Jada ain’t moving units. I can’t believe you even mentioned Dipset…negro please! LMAO. “Word is born son” it’s all about the Sound Scan numbers at the end of the day.

If you wanna talk longevity look up Scarface’s history.

  54. all coasts says:

This is what I mean when I tell my peeps that folks talk too much. Hip Hop is Hip Hop…wake the fuck up! u either like and artist or not. what is with all this coast to coast bullshit???? We gotta all eyes on us as black people…yet by all means we always wanna hate on each other.

My point is this…I’m from NY, and for anyone to say that NY had no love for southern rap is retarded!!!!! Why blame an entire region for what a few white owned record compaines decided they want to put on the airways. Most New Yorkers of African American background devired from down south. How do U think we hate U?
