Jay-Z Barclays Center Press Conference

Thursday, March 11 2010 3:26 PM EST | Posted by: B.Dot | Posted in: Blog, Focus

A press conference was held this afternoon for the groundbreaking of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn Yards. Set to open in 2012, the 18,000 seat arena will become the new home of the New Jersey Brooklyn Nets. Many local residents oppose the move due to imminent increases in traffic and living costs.

In attendance were Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Governor David Paterson. Nets co-owner Jay-Z, gave a brief speech, in which he paid homage to the memory of his nigga, Biggie. We did it Brooklyn!

Ok, so after goin through half of what has been written above, u can only come to one conclusion…In life, there’s 2 kinds of people…The watchers, who most of the times end up giving themselves the critique roles as well, and on the other hand, the doers…Usually, the doers don’t talk…they act…There was a post on these site not too long ago, of Young Guru explaining who Jay was to him…that old school hustling mentality, where you don’t talk, but speak by actions…And they usually let pple gossip and criticize them, while they’re making moves…Too many guys calling Jay a mason, a sellout, too old, ugly, etc…We’ve all heard the rethoric…The truth is (and that’s numbers, facts, accolades, reality, etc…), this guy has done more to represent the genre in a great light, than any other act ever has…Run DMC laid the foundation, LL became the first rap star, Big and Pac popularized the genre and became icons, Eminem widened the fan base, etc, but what this guy has done, time and time again (first non athlete with a shoe, a shoe that sold out in hours in every footlocker nationwide, first artist to have ownership in professional sports, first artist in the builders and titans section of Time’s most influential people of the year, more number one albums than any other solo artist ever, first rap artist invited to the UN headquarters for the Water for life mission, first rap artist to visit the White House’s Situation Room, first rap artist to headline a rock oriented festival in Glastonbury, the list goes on endlessly…)…You don’t have to like the guy nor his music, but you gotta respect what he has accomplished…He’s bringing jobs to the borough, attention to the borough, media coverage to the borough, and most importantly, since the Dodgers, BK will be relevant again…But that’s besides the point…The guy has a line on the second Best of Both Worlds that goes : “…i opened more doors for y’all fuckers than car service…”

and still i wonder is it the people in the projects, the dirt poor that are up in arms about this shit, or is it their so-called representatives. and i wonder to what degree these so-called reps have their best interest at heart, and REALLY understand what the fuck they want. shit is complicated.

  3. teejay says:

    @baphomet

I’m not really defending anything as much as I’m trying to help you not look stupid. Really. You look like a damn fool.you can’t spell, your grammar is atrocious, and moreover you have no idea what the fuck you’re talking about. Really. Go back to school, you wanna talk about someone needing to get an education? Learn how to spell, your case might come off a little better.

  4. BAPHOMET says:

lmao @I have no idea of what I am talking about.
I am fully aware of what I am talking about this is why I wont dig to much Jay Z graves.
I just want to make sure thatt the mainstream readers know the truth about jay z and his masonery publicity stunt.

    See ya ignorant hood rats

  5. teejay says:

Well at least you wrote better that time..

  6. LadyLuck says:

jesus joseph and mary @Baphomet young lady or young man, whichever you are, it is so clear that reading comprhension is not one of your best skills, nor is subject verb predicates. you seriously need to stop, think, asses, then process your thoughts, then and only then should you come back and try and “spit some Mason knowledge” to us. Your lack of intelligence and pure hatred for a Jay Z is beyond sad, its boderline sick. this man as well, as his wife and countless others are trying to uplift and give back to their communities. so in the words of Jay “IF U CANT RESPECT THAT, YOUR WHOLE PERSPECTIVE IS WACK” have a good day “little boy/little girl”

  7. Dan says:

First off, fuck the Nets. Secondly, this building is supposed to be an architectural disaster. Enjoy Brooklyn.

  8. iam2smooth says:

Omg hovi is that Nigga!!! Brooklyn stand up

Shit I don’t see fif bitch ass doin shit lol!!

  9. Dan says:

Y’all BK niggas proud of the fucking Nets coming to your ends?! Damn.

  10. you know what, says:

“In theory, it should be everything that a progressive urban policy analyst like me would want from a new development. Atlantic Yards would create lots of new housing immediately adjacent to mass transit lines. It would be a mix of residential, commercial, retail, and entertainment space. And it would create new affordable housing and green space.

But, somehow, Atlantic Yards developer Forest City Ratner got it all wrong. The project required two things to make it feasible: the use of eminent domain to acquire the property and hundreds of millions of dollars in public subsidies. Public officials justified both by proclaiming that the project would also create public benefits. But these public benefits were always dubious. And as the project has progressed, they have all but disappeared completely. Now it seems that the project will be a money loser for the city and will scar the face of Brooklyn for decades.”

  11. 106 says:

This is for all those fucks wondering why Jay been seen with the Mayor and the Governor. The reason he did the 9/11 concert. You need people powerful people on your side to do big things like this. The people that live in that area didnt want this to happen but money talks bullshit walks. This is great to me because Brooklyn where im from is the only part of the city with no stadium or team Bronx Queens and Manhattan all have teams. I think people need to move out the damn city you ever seen the population map? 8 million in the city the country is big its no wonder New yorkers are always pistoff. Big Bank take little bank its not Jay fault he didnt make the rules.

  12. blaqscorpio says:

Aww, the USUAL suspects I see. JIGGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

  13. MIAMI says:

Sean Carter should be an inspiration to every AMERICAN black, white, brown, male, female, rich, poor, and everything in between he has shown everybody that anything is possible keep faith in god and keep striving to reach your goals

  14. ill_uminated says:

    Good move…Jays the man…
From reasonable doubt, you can just hear how much of a hustler he is..
hes never gonna stop, as long as theres money to be made, hes gonna get it,..
That just, how us hustlers think… we wanna top our last move. and never stop.
Its a good feeling when u the best at what u do, and he might not be the best “rapper” but hes pretty dam good at making money.. “it aint personal bk, always business”

  15. eazy says:

Jay Z is a “minority” owner… he’s nothing more than a puppet for crooked businessmen who can’t reach our demographic..You crown Jay for owning a itty bitty piece of the Nets but don’t mention Usher ( a real owner) of a respectable franchise like the Cleveland Cavaliers or even Nelly with the Bobcats. Jay has done nothin but sell his soul over the last few years to people who could care less what happens to himn when their through with him. If your so exicted about him bringing new jobs what about the people at Roc a Fella? sell your company at it’s peak for a job paying a mere percentage of the profits? GREAT BUSINESS MOVE JAY!! Roc a wear, hey lets sell that too! let’s treat the workers at 40/40 like mexicans and fill our music with a lifestyle no one that supports me can relate to or afford..you the man HOV
mark my words Hov has removed his backbone and surrounded himself with people that have repeatedly preyed upon our creativity and magnetism..
He may have reached heights no simple artist has but believe nothin under the sun is new, and Hov is the new kid on the block playin with cats way out of his league( remember what happened to Stringer Bell? lol)
I need Hov to do something thats going to benefit the people that faced the same circumstances he did, not a handout just a simple acknowledgement.
because at the end of the day he makes rich music rich people don’t listen to, open’s upscale places that upscale people don’t really frequent..wut about the hood..
at some point (maybe not now) but every dollar that you attained came from someone that believed in you’s pocket show em u believe back then you’l truly be the one and only BIG HOMEY!!

  16. BAPHOMET says:

    LMAO @EAZY

IT LOOK LIKE JAY IS REVEALED THIS AFTERNOON

I CANT BE MORE HAPPY THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.
HE JUST MAE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE & WILL PAY FOR IT

  21. Dayum says:

@Nathenial, its clear as day what the Barclays Center will result in. Not Jay’s thought because utimately he doesn’t make the decisions, in face he is just the cultural go-between (just for kicks of course) because urban BK will have this forced upon them whether they like it or not. The only thing i’m concerned about is the wellbeing and staying power of ethnic minorities in the neighbourhoods they love…if this all works out great for us then fine…most likely we’ll end up being shuffled to some other unsightly end of NY.

  23. Dayum says:

One more thing, this move is deeper than rap. When your directly affecting the lives of citizens through your ‘corporate ventures’ in a predictabily negetive way…i could two shits about your Hip Hop classics…as Kim would say, your dead wrong.

  24. leftsidewest says:

Ayo Jay-Z you the white mans bitch! Old ass nigga! I’ll smack the shit outcha camel lips!

  25. mac DIESEL says:

IMMA TELL YA’LL SOMETHIN’!!!! WHEN JAY OR ANY BLACK MAN MAKES BUSINESS DECISIONS HE DOESN’T HAVE TO WEAR THAT “I’M BLACK” SIGN AROUND HIS NECK 24/7!!!!! SO EVERYTIME JAY DOES SOMETHIN’, DOES HE HAVE TO ASK HIMSELF, “WILL THIS AFFECT A BLACK PERSON”??? IF I GET THIS CAR WILL IT AFFECT A BLACK PERSON??? IF I BUY THIS HOUSE WILL IT UPSET A BLACK PERSON??? IF I BUILD A CASINO NEAR BROOKLYN WILL IT HURT A BLACK PERSON???? I MEAN C’MON, WUT TYPE OF FUCKIN’ REALITY YA’LL LIVIN’ IN??? JAY DON’T OWE U OR ME SHIT CUZ HE’S BLACK N I’M BLACK!!!! GIVIN’ BACK TO THE COMMUNITY IS ONE THING BUT EXPECTON’ THIS NIGGA TO APPEASE N PLEASE EVERY BLACK MUFUCKA IS SO UNREALISTIC N MAKE BELIEVE!!!! JAY IS BLACK BUT THAT’S NOT ALL THAT HE IS!!!! IT’S NOT ABOUT RACE ALL THE FUCKIN’ TIME!!!! IT’S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT “HELP A BROTHER OUT”!!!! SO BUILDING A STADIUM IN BROOKLYN IS GONNA AFFECT THE WHOLE ENTIRE BLACK RACE??? U CAN’T PLEASE EVERYBODY!!!! SOME ARE GONNA PROSPER FROM THIS N SOME AREN’T WHEN THE STADIUM GET BUILT!!!! THAT’S JUST FUCKIN’ LIFE!!!! U CAN’T EXPECT JAY OR ANY BUSINESSMAN TO BASE HIS/HER BUSINESS DECISIONS ON THE NOTION OF “WILL IT AFFECT THEIR OWN”!!!! IT’S IMPOSSIBLE N UNREALISTIC!!!! STOP FRONTIN’ NIGGAS!!!! START LIVIN’ IN THE REAL WORLD!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  27. ill_uminated says:

To everyone that really thinks this is a bad move and jay is just another puppet on a string.. ask yourself, when is the last time you did something to benefit others or yourself at that?.. right, thought so.

This move will create hundrends of jobs, maybe thousands.. but for jay-z this is just another accomplishment, maybe a personal goal of his.. So why try to put the man down?.. why dont we all say, good for him if he can do it so can I..
He came from the streets, he sold drugs, made hot music, and now hes at the white house, Where did he go wrong?..

  28. Odia says:

But as soon as somebody want to improve shit, you yelling about gentrification and how the “man” is pricing poor blacks out the community…….You motherfucking right nigga, its a POOR COMMUNITY, quit crying, quit waiting on government hand outs, get off your couch and do something with your life other than talking shit. If niggas wasnt having 15000 babies with broke bitches who got more money then your sticking ass to begin with, we wouldn’t be in this position.
