Lupe Fiasco Explains His Jay-Z Comment

1515 caught up with Wasalu on the red carpet at the MTV documentary Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro Wednesday night in NYC. Lu says he’s reached out to Hov and reveals that a new collaboration is in the works. He also clarifies his “I don’t want to be like Jay-Z” comment.

[My comments were] just an example using him of how people rate success. There’s an idea of the status quo that every rapper wants to be Jay-Z. Nah. Every rapper does not want to be Jay-Z. Every rapper don’t wanna be Kanye West. Everybody don’t wanna be Lil Wayne. They wanna be who they are. You’re a fool trying to chase that success down and manage it like that. I always look at my success as further than a dollar sign, further than record sales. Everybody thinks because you’re black and you’re from the ‘hood, you wanna be Jay-Z. There’s kids who wanna be astrophysicists and don’t care about rap. That should be OK. You should be OK just being you, working your regular job and being happy. That’s why I made that statement. I felt it need to be said.”

Shouts to Lupe for being him. While um sure most people wouldn’t mind being Hov, but more don’t being themselves more. That’s why I support people like Lu, Budden, Ross, etc. They keep doing what THEY want to do and to hell with all the talk.

  2. Shawn says:

“I always look at my success as further than a dollar sign, further than record sales.”

Good follow up Lupe and your point is better explaind a bit..However when speaking and using someone specific as the Polar opposite of your view is to say their agenda and
ideas of success are somehow not like yours. The comparison suggest success and musical integrity are mutually exclusive and it’s not, they can co-exist.

  3. man says:

i understood what he met the first time he mentioned it but it was smart 4 him to specifcally say what he met Lupe fiasco cant wait 4 the album

  4. Lupe really, seriously, truly needs to shut the fuck up already. He sounds like an idiot, and Jay-Z is NOT one to fuck with. How quickly Lupe forgot that Hov cosigned “Food & Liquor”.

  5. DARKAQUA says:

    I AGREE WITH LUPE COMMENT

  6. nappyheadjenkins says:

He’s like a soft nerd core egomaniac

Chill my dude everybody wants success there way you ain’t no better then Yo Gotti

  7. Moose says:

@Ricky Retardo yes I did say Ross. Sadly the rap genre hasn’t fell off too much, it’s the fans and I industry in itself because too many are focused on the personal/private accomplishments of an artist rather than the talent and quality of music produced. HipHop as a culture has failed in comparisons to all other fans of music. Why?…maybe cuz we too busy searching for the cosign or approval by mainstream. I said Ross mainly cuz he took his lumps, n yet still has better music than all these “real” rappers. But yet a person like Maino isn’t supported…and he too has better music than most. But who am I? Just a fan

  8. GAY-Z says:

LUPE YOU DONT HAVE TO EXPLAIN YOURSELF NIGGA… FUCK JAY HE FELL OFF IN 2001

  9. Nathaniel says:

i don’t see why you niggas be mad at lupe for speaking his mind. same with kanye. used to be that shit was encouraged because NOBODY spoke up. he doesn’t need to shut the fuck up and make music. niggas should use their influence and their voice for more than just a fuckin booth. i dont know when it became fashionable to just “shut up and record”….seriously, what the fuck kind of dumb shit is that? yall sound like the slave who didnt want anybody to arouse conflict, runnin around on some “shhh, i’s just work, we dont want massa catchin us tawkin…just grab this plow and till the land joe” shit.

i dont give a fuck if nobody agrees. and i’m sure he dont care if he loses fans because they dont like his comments. fuck’em. he represents himself.

and no, everybody doesn’t want to be Jay-Z. it ain’t a diss, and comebody should say that shit. i love the nigga jigga, but i don’t wanna be that muhfucka either. if hov and lu are cool, which they are, and are still in touch, then obviously he didn’t see anything wrong with the comment. so u fuck niggas stop defending a jay when he doesn’t even see a need to defend himself. ol calvary has arrived ass niggas.

  10. Will says:

he dont need to clarify it we know he wasnt dissing Jay

when Lupe goes into these long statements explaining things its obnoxious of him he thinks alot of us are dumb and too slow to catch on

Lupe is not obnoxious on records but when he does stuff like this and release statements like this it shows he thinks hes lowkey smarter than everybody else

Nigga you dont have to explain yoself we understood when you said it the 1st time you dont need another big ass paragraph to explain the same shit

  11. Nathaniel says:

“I always look at my success as further than a dollar sign, further than record sales.”

^and for all the hip hop ass niggas that are on this site, that should be the comment of the year. thats real shit. thats the shit we constantly go back n forth about. i agree

  12. Born By says:

Weird how folks can always find a way to hate on what someone else says…hating is so tired..to to get ya grown up on..

  13. Nathaniel says:

    @WIll

u know…they prolly asked him about it, so he clarified. and a written paragraph comes out in conversation a lot shorter. i’m just sayin…

  14. bap2313 says:

Anyone with any type of intelligence knew what he was trying to say. If you didn’t, then I don’t know what to tell you…

  15. sliccone says:

I feel where Lupe’s comin from. But still…. Jay>Everybody else

  16. Digga says:

He’s so full of SH**. How many rap dudes are really being THEMSELVES, as opposed to putting up the same old facade? GTFOH son. Just rap and stop talking.

  17. WhatsUpSon says:

    @Nathaniel SUPREME COSIGN.

  18. cli-city says:

That’s the problem with some of these rappers…They aint rapping…man I love listening to lupe or jay electronica but them niggas aint got no new shit out….that’s why I gott give it up to wayne the nigga say dumb shit…but atleast he is feedling his fans man…damn like can we get an album more than once every three years…..smh…..waiting on kanye and eminem and drakes album…. Then I’m waiting on the distant relative that carter IV and that new dre 3k….alotta good albums this years fuck what you heard and everybody goona deliver let’s not bring down rappers and support the genre we love by putting out music…

  19. ironic says:

    ^^^^^ what Nathaniel said.

  20. Big Mike says:

Lupe don’t explain yourself to these dumb ass people.

  21. QUEENZ says:

Well said Lupe, thats why i cop this brother’s records when ever he drops. I feel like he’s just authentic.

  22. Ac@pella! says:

And I totally agree with everything Lupe says. Everybody DOESN’T wanna be Jay or Kanye or Wayne. They CAN’T be those guys. U can take from them here and there but, they are them and u are u. It’s like everybody being compared to Jordan in basketball. Kobe’s not Jordan, neither is Lebron. They never will be Jordan because they’ve established their own identities. I know it’s cool to see flashes of ur favorite entertainers in ppl, but it’s never good for ppl to jus str8 up always wanna be them. That shit’s wack. I hope no one said the same comment as I did, because I commented before I read the others. Lol.

  24. Ac@pella! says:

And be for real, none of us wanna be Jay-Z or at least we SHOULDN’T wanna be another man, but I wanna obtain his success or something close to it or comfortably past it…Get it right niggaz. I applaud Lupe 4 this comment.

  25. @Nathaniel

“… till the land joe” HAHAHA, that’s some Chicago shit if I ever heard it. But for real, 100% dead the fuck on. His point was obvious when he first made it, but the need for him to expound was also made obvious by the controversy it stirred up. Cats just look too hard for the shots fired now.

  26. Boombapster says:

Did Lu really need to explain the obvious meaning of that comment, or was some media bitches trying to start beef to sell ad space? Fucking don’t get it. No crib notes needed, Wasalu. Get back to climbing that mountain with your dude Kenna and shit. Don’t break your back. #ikid

    BB$. Work. Play.

  27. CaramelKandie says:

Whatever happened to coming out being yourself? It’s those distinctive voices, rhymes, and lines that make originality….everybody knows a Tim beat, a Neptunes beat, a Swizz beat when they hear it. Everybody knows Jay’s voice when they hear it. But I def. thought Drake was a wannabe Kanye when he first came out for real.

So I agree with Nathaniel. Lupe is original. So is Jay Electronica. It’s just too bad that the “shut up and rap” artists are the ones getting the air time while their puppet strings are being controlled.

  28. honeynbees says:

    i co-sign @nappyheadjenkins. hahaha!

  29. Shawn says:

@Duffie…Ha! I guess rap started in 93-94 huh?…Do your homework. And Rza anywhere in the vicinity of a Top 5 MC is crazy talk..Producer? Maybe..

  30. HellBreak says:

Lupe dont need to explain himself to these homo ass niggas… even if it was a shot at Jay he wouldnt respond he a faggot.

  31. crossover1985 says:

i knew exactly what he meant when he first said it. only a fool would think he was dissing jay.

  32. bap2313 says:

    @ will

Obviously you haven’t read the comments on the previous post or this post lol. Most people are too slow to understand what he is saying.. and even after he does clarify so they can catch up they still make dumb comments. Smh

  33. yaboitone says:

    @DUFFIE,
    You’re an idiot.

    @Lupe Fiasco,
Please stop explaining yourself to these people. If they were too dumb or full of hate to get it the first time, they won’t understand the second time either.

  34. yaboitone says:

    p.s.

Lupe Fiasco is the greatest LYRICIST alive. Period.

Jay-Z is the greatest rapper. LUPE FIASCO IS THE GREATEST LYRICIST.

  35. Kit Walker says:

shut the fuck up who wouldn’t want to be hov stop frontin no one wants to be a cock sucker that climbs mountains instead of dropping an album that they have been teasing their fans with for a hundred years

    (side note to the fronting)

    jay-z retires – lupe retires

remember how much these dude used to complain about when his ablums leaked and he lost money he got so pissed of he all together stopped putting out mixtapes and started climbing mountains if uv read the 48 laws of power ull remember the chapter hate what you can’t have

  36. isis says:

yeah everybody doesn’t want to be Jay. Or Kanye. Or Wayne. But they all want a record w/them. LOL.

Nah seriously, Lupe we got you man. No explanation needed. Just would have been a bit more poignant had you not announced a Jay collabo on the horizon. Or if I had forgotten Jay that Jay co-EP’d Food and Liquor…

  37. K GRIZZLY says:

u haters a local jokers..lf i was lupe i would not explain myself…i dont wanna be like jay-z i wanna be my own ME..I GIVE JIGGA props but that where it stops…lupe wants folks to be themself but some of yall cant even do that right.

  38. ATI says:

“Nigga you dont have to explain yoself we understood when you said it the 1st time you dont need another big ass paragraph to explain the same shit”

Judging by some of the reaction to the initial statement, it’s no wonder he felt the need to simplify it for some of these slow-ass ninjas.

  39. Psike Deezie says:

Lupe……what the fuck ever. On with more important news. Lupe is fucking garbage…who cares what the fuck Lupe thinks? Jay even touching his first joint was a total mistake….Lame ass rapper. Lupe…stop reaching and find some fucking relevance instead of running ya’ mouth and putting other rappers name in ya’ mouth. Worst than Game with that shit.

  40. Will says:

I’m kinda mad that he did clear up the statement for you ignorant ass fools he shouldn’t have, the people who didn’t understand what he meant the first time don’t deserve an explanation. If your really lost on Lupe go back and listen to his first mix tapes listen to “Food & Liquor”, “The Cool” and of course “Enemy Of The State” and you’ll see what he’s really about its definitely deeper than rap.

  43. Shawn says:

@ CanIblog…Has he done anything other than rap? Seriously , I’m unaware. If you shed some light I’d appreciate it..
Does he donate time and money to communities in need? Is he educating and helping up and coming artist on the business and getting in the business?
    just curious bro.

  44. Psike Deezie says:

@ Dan….Really? You don’t like that opinion? Jump off my nutts faggit.

  45. ultimate sharingan user says:

Um yes he does donate time. THAT WHY HE CLIMBED THE DAMN MOUNTAIN. some people are so ignorant. sorry.

  46. 106 says:

I think yall missing the point. He tried to use Jay to make his point. He said I don’t want to be worth 400 Mil like Jay or perform on every award show???? Why you in the game then? Thats what he shouldve clarified. We all know what he was trying to say he just shouldn’t act like Jay is only about Bentleys and chains to make his point that all. On another note that new song he got I’m Beaming is fire.

  47. Nathaniel says:

    @Shawn

well he just climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise awareness on the Global Water Crisis. see http://www.summitonthesummit.com

his music is education, and probably brought hip hop into the conflict diamond issue in Africa, as well as the Child Soldier issue in countries like Uganda. see Conflict Diamonds & Little Weapon.

and uh…he brought Gemini (Gem Stones), Stack Bundles, Matthew Santos, Sarah Green, Soundtrakk, Nikki Jean, and Hey Champ in under F&F, his production company.

and overall, i’d say his music beyond those two tracks i noted is pretty educational. The Cool, the entire album/concept is kicking knowledge all over it. image wise, lu is a good look for hip hop. talent wise too…he just get’s over looked in the media (our media as well.)

  48. Shawn says:

    @Nathaniel..

Good looking on the info Bro. I really wasn’t trying to sideways so I’m glad you can point me in the right direction of finding Lupe’s efforts.
I’ve never been vested in Lupe one way or another so I don’t actively look for Lupe’s activity.
    Good looking.

@Ultimate Shagrin User….I think that comment was directed at me. And you’re correct, I’m ignorant about Lupe’s dealing outside of music. So that’s why I asked. Maybe you should stop getting so emotional and share whatever knowledge you have on a topic, any topic. I had no idea he climbed a mountain.

  56. MOC23 says:

Matt Santos, He Say and Hey Champ were dope… Lupe slipped. Being Jay-Z is hard though. He’s a rapper. Nothing more. Nothing less. Get in where you fit in.

  57. Consignment says:

Lupe is cool, because he drops 1 BANGIN SINGLE per album. Stats like that will keep you in the game, but it won’t get you Jigga or Kanye success, so I can dig where he’s comin’ from… I think

  58. Laughing says:

I don’t think half of you have even heard Lupe or understand half of what he says.

He says not everyone wants to be like Jay, and here you’re laughing how he could never be like Jay.
How does your lone braincell maneuver?

  59. chek me out blaaaow says:

LOL @ lupe saying he doesnt wanna blow up like jay. his first album had jay-z, neptunes, kanye west, a smash single, and critical success, and he still didnt go platinum. he was getting gassed. now lupe gasses himself. lupe is a fraud. he didnt start rhyming like a geek till his label told him too. he wasnt rhyming about kick flips till his label told him to. he can rap, but hes a queer.

  60. bap2313 says:

    ^^^^

U obviously failed any type of reading comprehension in school if you think that’s what Lupe is trying to say. Gtfoh.

  61. chek me out blaaaow says:

i know what lupe is tryin to say, and its irrelevant. nigga talks too much. end of story. drop a album. shut the fuck up. this nigga couldnt be jay if he wanted, jay was dropping an album every year when he hit while lupe drops an album and goes into hiding when it flops. he doesnt care about sales, but he cries everytime his songs leak. he pushes fans further away every time he opens his mouth. hes a good rapper, he should stick to rappin. he climbed a mountain, who really cares? holla when lupe makes a classic that public embraces. he needs to humble himself.

  62. Pause Police says:

For a man who’s supposed to be so deft he can’t seem to make a succinct comment.

He would’ve been better off saying something in regards to “pursuing your own personal success” etc because he did a piss poor job contrasting Jay’s success.

And it goes beyond ‘black kids in the hood’ Lupe.

Tons of kids have grown up listening to Jay’s music and watching his professional progress and aspire to acquire a similair style of social leverage, and THATS the underlying message to be taken from someone like Jay.

I would’nt be suprised though if this were a celver PR move.

More important than content is something that starts a ‘conversation’ on twitter and blogs.

That, more than content, creates public dialogue and artistic relevance.

  63. Reasy F. says:

Smart fans realized that he wasn’t hating on Jay-Z.
Dumbed down ones are the ones that blew this out of proportion.

  64. Lemon says:

LMAO THIS THE SAME NIGGA THAT MADE SINGLES FOR TWILIGHT?! HES TRYING TO GET 10 YEAR OLD GIRLS IN HIS FANBASE WHILE SAYING THIS BULLSHIT ROFL

  65. Money Mitch says:

wtf is up with the hair ad thats some wack ish

  66. MookieDC says:

I’m as big a Lupe fan as anyone because of what he says in his music. That’s all anyone of us should go by. But to say this after making a song for Twilight? GTFOH with that shit. Of course this was a publicity stunt. We can all but assume that Lupe is a highly intelligent individual, so he knew damn well what it meant to say Jay Z’s name, especially in this context. Now he doesn’t look like the bad guy and STILL has his name all over the blogosphere.

The fact that this comment has been blown up as it has been just proves that, as usual, ignorance reigns supreme.

lupe wasn’t dissin jay at all.he’s standing up for the sake of emceeing.back n the days rappers strive to be diffrent from the next.everybody brought something to the table, today rappers try to sound like, jay, wayne t.i. or whosever hot at the time.he saying be you and don’t try to be them.but most fans don’t research other artist cause the listen to what is being fed to them.now jay got money no doubt, but jay fans are only loyal as his next hit.every year jay sales has not been the same.he haven’t out sold his hard knock life album to this date.but in lupe case.he has true loyal fans that will come to see him rather he has a album or not.
