Nas Plans To Pursue H.S. Diploma

Looks like Nas has finally smartened up. Yesterday at the Boys and Girls Club’s 43rd annual National Keystone Conference in Pittsburgh, Esco spoke on the importance of education and revealed that his goal was to receive his high school diploma. The rapper dropped out of school in the eighth grade. A mind is terrible thing to waste.

You tellin me this kickin knowledge ass nigga don’t have the credentials to kick knowledge? Lmfaoooo

  2. mac DIESEL says:

    GOOD SHIT NAS!!!! SALUTE!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  3. ghost says:

i dont get the purpose of u getting a diploma, if u say in first place that u dont believe in the teachings they scholl and you’re rich…trying to be a role model now…nicca please!!!

  4. the one says:

He should have thought of that before he got married… Maybe he would have thought of getting a prenup agreement before he married that gold digger!

  5. chillo says:

That would be a story in itself. the ratio of education to how dope the rapper is.

  6. Shawn says:

Just another in the long line of contradictions he’s had. For years you’ve shit on the standardize educational system only to now feel you need to adhere to a standardize test.
Whatever make you feel good Bro..and i guess it’s hard to get on your kids about High School if you havent finished

  7. oh damn says:

Well we all know that having a high school diploma don’t make you smart…there are millions of high school educated dummies living in this world a few commenting on this blog to be exact! Nas has written some of the most intriguing lyrics to date and his vocabulary is sharper than some people with a higher education! Do you Nas…while the HATERS continue to do nothing!

  8. Theloneus says:

So I guess Jay-Z is the smartest rapper alive.

  9. Dayum says:

Nas is so freakin dumb. Like ghost said, you claim the education system is bullshit, not teaching black people about their true history as mathmaticians and great pharoahs and whatnot yet you want to go BACK to H.S. to be fed the same ish?

  10. Toya says:

I think Nas deciding to pursuing a high school diploma is a good thing. By doing so, he’ll prove to a lot of people that he is not only a street savvy person but pretty book smart as well (even though in my opinion a person would have to be pretty smart all around in order to stay in the rap game for as long as he did).

  11. WhatsUpSon says:

Ohhhhhh…perhaps that explains “…givin’ mics MENUSTRAL cycles.” Hahaha. Hopefully he will have learned how to say and spell the word properly. Lol.

  12. WOW says:

lol @ THE IGNORANCE BEING SPREAD ON THIS BLOG! PEOPLE GOT THE NERVE TO CALL NAS DUMB FOR WANTING HIS HS DIPLOMA BUT YET HE IS STILL MORE INTELLIGENT THAN SOME OF THESE DUMB ASS PEOPLE COMMENTING UP HERE AND PROBABLY READ MORE BOOKS THAN THEY HAVE TOO! NAS IS SMARTER THAN MOST WITH A HS DIPLOMA!

  13. Blakout615 says:

Lol I swear rappers cant win for SHIT on the internet. A rapper could find the cure to a life-threatning disease & still get hated on smh.

  14. Blakout615 says:

And that part about Nas reading books in his spare time has to be true, because I remember wen Jungle said dude actually used to sit & read the dictionary wen he was growing up.

  15. Oj Da Cornball says:

    No no
this finally proves he had a ghost writer the whole time. Nas illiterate. I always heard Wiz, of Bravehearts, wrote his stuff. It all make sense now.

  16. Chris says:

To the people saying he’s a hypocrite for pursuing a HS diploma, I dont see how Nas saying the school system failed him on a record 16 years ago and then deciding to finish a goal is a contradiction. Ultimatley he’s probably gained enough perspective to know that the problems at his school in queens are not obstcles stopping him now for finishing a goal in life.

In fact, one should give him credit for at least attempting to activley educate himself by reading books and taking the initiative to get into the industry. As others have said, no way you stay in the industry this long without some smarts. Even with his current tax and martial problems, he’s mostly been a wise guy.

I think he sees now in his mid 30’s a lot of goals he wants to achieve in life and maybe he wants to pursue a college degree or postgrad in something too.

I do know this isnt the first time Ive seen him speak about going back to school. In fact last time was around 2000, right around the time his mom got to be sick and the battle with Jay was imminent. I guess a lot of conflict in his life makes him revaluate things.

  17. STFU says:

@Oj Da Cornball…your ignorance is scary! So because Nas did not graduate hs he has a ghost writer!? The hate this man receives is CRAZY! Illmatic, Stillmatic, Godson and Untitled was written by Wiz LMAO!!!!! Nas continue speaking truth and knowledge!

  18. TEFLON DON ! says:

Damn! nigga nas is illiterate, he must have a lot of people ghost writing for him

  19. Copster says:

    @ WOW: EXACTLY !

  20. KJ says:

He’s gonna finish HS when he doesn’t have to, and some of ya’ll still hate on this man!?? Incredolous! I don’t know where you’re from, but we don’t hate on those that make it to graduation where I’m from, we celebrate!

Its good to hear positive news in hip hop for a change, he’s setting a good example for the kids that look up to him. Props to Nasir Jones for this!

Some of ya’ll need to get the hate up out your blood, for real.

  21. BK says:

WHY THE FUCK DOES EVERY1 HAVE TO COMPLAIN WHEN THERE’S A MAN THAT’S TRYING TO BETTER HIMSELF?
THIS IS ABOUT THE DAMN PRINCIPLE, NOT AS THOUGH HE GONNA NEED IT IS HE???
PROPS 2 NAS FOR STANDING UP AND NOT JUST LETTING IT PASS HIM BY.

  22. STFU says:

How is someone illiterate but yet they can read books…LOL? Some people need to learn the difinition of illiterate!

  23. KJ says:

Em is a dropout and he writes well…

Nas did memorize a script for a movie, albeit a bad one.

    Go figure.

  24. Oj Da Cornball says:

    @STFU

Shut up. I’m from QB, dun.

To everybody, when the last time Nas read a book in front of you?
That dude had Audiobook on cassettes since illmatic.
Watch his writing change after he gets his diploma. h gonna attempt to write without Wiz.

    Wiz=Paid

    Wiz>>>>>Nas.

  25. Blakout615 says:

*DEAD* @ Wiz writing for Nas. Thats like Baby Sham writing for Busta

  26. DARKAQUA says:

HOW YOU DROP OF SCHOOL IN THE 8TH GRADE?? WHAT AGE RANGE IS THAT…13?? WOW MY GRANDMA WOULD HAVE KICKED MY A** UP AND DOWN THE STREET…WELL THAT’S GOOD HE’S GOING BACK TO FINISH

  27. jamdawham says:

Wow a lot of y’all nigga need to go back to junior high…

  28. Oj Da Cornball says:

    Blakout615

And i assume you think that’s impossible.
    Google the art of brainwashing.

I’m glad people will see Wiz as the true goat finally.

  29. SilkCityP says:

Funny that so many ppl comment on Nas being a Hypocrite… yet in reality all of us are hypocritical to a certain extent…. Its called being human! Nas is probably the greatest writer & poet Hip Hop has ever had, and is probably Top 5 as a song writer of any Genre!

    Nas Pen Game >>>>

  30. ghost says:

to those of u who say picking up a book is a good thing, i say this ,the mind has to wonder develop interest first then u go to search the right book, some of these scriptures are useless.

  31. That Dude says:

you fools! the amount of degrees you have doesn’t dictate your knowledge or wisdom.

  32. Shawn says:

    @ Chris Solid point.
I think its a contradiction because for yrs he’s made it very clear that you didn’t need, and/or believe that a standardized education made you smart. With that said I don’t understand how that’s changed. Those of us that have a conformed and standardize education also know all HS diplomas and GED aren’t equal. Having either of these doesn’t make you smart, which seemed to be his mantra for yrs…That doesn’t change with a GED.
The bottom line is whatever makes him feel good. I think he has a daughter HS age and really may want to show some dedication and discipline as a example…Just my opinion.

  33. Oj Da Cornball says:

    LOL
I was joking to get some stans mad.

My true comment i’ll like to say is now that Kelis is up in that behind and IRS on his back he finding time to relieve stress thru this.

It’s clear he doesn’t need one right now, but it seems his doing it to show the kids he is practicing what he preaches. For that alone he deserve props, if his concerns is the kids.
I don’t know nothing about the hypocrite things, don’t know what he said, but whatever.

Now if The Game will go get his and show the kids he not as dumb as we think he is that’ll be great.

  34. ironic says:

HOLY F&^$^%$^KKK!!!!! REALLY??? Sure he’s journey;s filled with contradictions. However, you’re gonna shit on Nas for possibly wanting to set some example to younger cats to stay in school, even though the educational system IS failing them/us. To manoeuvre through the manure you need skills and certain credentials. Change is NOT going to come overnight. Ignorant ass fuckers, you haters are.

  35. mike says:

Nas is the best who ever did it, fo rilla son
    poetry emotions, poetry in motion
    …in jail for the flow

    esco let’s go !!!

    peace

    ps:

Nasir Jones aka Nasty Nas aka Esco aka Nastradamus aka God’s Son >

  36. Chris says:

    @ Shawn

Aside from “Represent” he’s never really outright dismissed the education system. In fact for the most part, his complaint and issue is that black kids in the hood dont get the same educational opportunties and the education system in inner cities is poorly handled. At least that’s what I’ve heard listening to some of his other records over time (especially during the Lost Tapes-Stillmatic era). He’s certainly been a bit more concious of the value of education over his career (generally speaking) and I think this is just part of his personal evolution which he previously expressed on wax.

  37. Shawn says:

@ Chris..Agreed. And here’s thing..It can never hurt no matter the reasons

  38. LO says:

I SMACKED rite now…only thing i remember from the post ” Dropped at 8th grade..” then makin Illmatic. DAMN!! That’s Nasty!!

  39. toad3527 says:

if he dropt out in the eighth grade he should probably pursue his middle school education first up in this billy madison. nas is waisting his time with this they arent gonna teach him nothin in these gov’t schools except what they want you to think. i want the old nas back

  40. ABP says:

  41. Post no billz says:

I guess nas is a testament to self education cus ive heard some of the most illest, complex, and intelligent shit from nas since he was 18. youd never know he aint made it past the 8th grade.dayum!

  42. toad3527 says:

second that post no billz. nas is a g. he doesnt need that herd mentality of our current educational establishment to mess up his thought process.

  43. indeed! says:

Nas is a smart man and how can any human being call another a hypocrit when that is what being human is about we charge daily but yet some of us never learn a damn thing in life but HATE!

nah j. cole and diddy went to college kanye dropped out but id say nas, common and lupe are the smartest

  45. indeed! says:

    ^we change daily

  46. QUEENZ says:

you people are so fucking ignorant i swear. just cuz we may not believe in the school system doesnt mean we shouldnt go to school. could you imagine if every black kid said fuck school cuz and dropped out cuz they werent being taught about their black history? Thats why Nas says teach yourselves (the things they don’t teach at school). Thank God Nas was talented enough as an MC and survived without a “formal” education but he has children and what kind of example does that set for them if he didn’t get his diploma? What if Destiny and Knight aren’t blessed with the gift that Nas was blessed with should they just drop out? Stop being so fucking negative as soon as you see Nas name pop up. Y’all niggas only half listen. Do you really think Nas believes that all schools should be shut down? Fucking retards. He’s just saying to seek the knowledge that you cant find at school for yourself not fucking drop out and do nothing! Its disgusting how some of you just comment to hate on niggas. If i dont like something i dont bother. At least make a valid argument. this is dedicated to the “Fuck Nas Coalition”. All the real niggas who follow him know where that line came from. Peace

  47. Realness says:

    @toad3527
Please know how to spell before commenting on Nas going back to school.

DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION, HATE ON YA SPELL CHECK!

  48. Interscope Employee says:

“Looks like Nas has finally smartened up”

    *DEADDDDDDDDDDDD*

  49. that-new-extra-fresh says:

  50. luv it says:

  51. toad3527 says:
