Wow, that was fast. Five months after honoring Def Jam’s 25th anniversary, it appears the South is next to get its just due. The show’s executive producer, Fab 5 Freddy is currently in the 305 rounding up some of the city’s heavy hitters. This should be hot.

YEA!! I was just talking about how they shud honor the Geto boys. Hopefully VH1 do it right. Call up P too!

  8. King JuggaNott says:

It’s about time we get the credit we deserve. What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger. One reason the south is ahead in Hip Hop right now is because we survived not getting major deals, major advances, major air play or tv time. That didn’t make us the same way it spoiled the up north rappers. Now that the companies don’t want to give the big advances, they have no more tv shows that really push artists etc. The north is hurting….but since we never really had that we had to make our own labels, push out our own cds etc. So we no how to survive.

  9. Oj Da Cornball says:

If they do that they better respect the west.
the west still run this by technicality, Dr. Dre is west and he still run the game, in terms of no one outdone til today, has the most anticipated CD ever. lol

  10. Shawn says:

Co Sign Mac… I was pussed when the did a Def Jam memorial.. No hate to the south but is anybody thinks anyone listed in that Tweet should be honored can suck a sweaty nut sack..
There tons of people not honorned.. And EPMD is one that should.
Anybody other than UGK, Geto Boys, OutKast and Goodie ( I may have missed 1 or 2 but you get my point) even being discussed as
    contributors is fucking Blasphamy..
VH1 is doing the fucking Banana in the tail pipe.. You do right a few yrs them lose your fucking mind..Eat a dick for sub dividing and makeing this shit into “tv award show” and not honoring those that deserve it.

  11. goldy says:

wack that they are still overlooking gangstarr, heavy d, epmd, jazzy jeff & the fresh prince, queen latifah! c’mon fab!

  12. what the fuck?! says:

    T.I.
    Lil Wayne
    Young Jeezy
    Andre 3000
    Scarface
    Ludacris
    Bun B
    8 ball
    Mjg

These are the rappers that should be honored.

  13. 730 says:

With all due respect to the south; I don’t think southern hip hop has enough of a history to warrant an entire show. Obviously VH1 doesn’t care what I think but I think a lot of people (most over the age of 25) will agree with me.

  14. Shawn says:

    8ball and Mjg, Face, 3K, Wayne …Yes
    on the fence ….TI, Luda
    Hell no… Jezzy

  15. The Editor says:

This gets me going, but LATIFAH, G RAP, KID N PLAY, STETSASONIC, MARLEY MARL & JUICE CREW, HERBIE LUV BUG,

    SOUTH
    LUKE
    SCARFACE
    OUTKAST
    BUN B

  16. Web Conn says:

as long as DJ Screw and J. Prince get honored im all for it

  17. Toya says:

So rather than honor invidual Southern rappers that have contributed to hip-hop, they decide instead to put everyone into one basket. Guess they have no intention of being like the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame which inducts people in based on their actual body of work. Don’t get me wrong. There are a lot of great Southern rappers that are amazing. And South rap does get more air play these days. I just don’t like the idea of the C and D list Southern rappers getting to share the stage with the ones that really are good just because they both came from the same region.

And what’s next? Will the East, West, and Midwest get their own honors as well?

  18. epinz says:

How the fuck u gone honor a whole region? So after u cover all of the south, u ain’t gunna do another sothern artist cuz they was already honored? It should stick to artist, with def jam b’in the only exception to the rule. And how u gunna honor the south and not all the other regions that reigned b4 it?

Fab 5 should know better since he was around a bunch of muthafuckas that deserve it more than a pitbull or trina do. Also, if its gunna b done, u can’t put young jeezy and t.I in it cuz they been big since like 05. Epmd been big since 88, jay since 96, muthafuckin nas……get y’all shit together vh1. That’s what happeneds when we let a fuckin network that never promoted hip hop other than stories of how they fell off do an honors for it. Soon video music box gone do a country honors…smfh!!!!!!!

  19. Pat DonT Say Jack says:

Im Down For Watching it as long as they honor all of the Souths 1hit Wonders and 1album ghost…
    D4L
    Franchise Boyz
    Shop Boys
    504 Boyz
All of them Mofo’s/ Fcuk Bwoys lol

  20. what the fuck?! says:

    @Shawn

You’re on the fence about T.I. and Luda?

T.I. has 5 straight platinum albums and Luda has 4. They should be the first names on the list.

  21. Chris says:

This is VH1’s way of getting ratings rather than honoring the concept of the show.

In some ways this has kinda become a Hip-Hop Hall of Fame event. So this is going to ignite contreversy. Aside from the fact that many purists still feel funny about the south, why cant they just go back to honoring individuals?

I agree that this region deserves recognition, but then we can do one for New York or LA just the same. I agree cats like Scarface, Outkast and certain movments from the region deserve love but at the same time honor them individually.

And at the same time why cant we honor cats who are derserving that are not from the South.

How the hell have people like say Dr. Dre, DJ Premier and Nas not been honored yet at this show yet? Why cant the southern dudes I just named be honored indivdually too rather than have this big overview show?

I just feel that changing the concept to honor an overall movement (be it a record label like Def Jam or a region like the South) rather than indviduals is done out of fear of ratings. I get thats why you have these things but c’mon son

  22. dalvyn says:

how havent they not done big pun yet??

  23. money Mitch says:

Idk why ppl are even mentioning any south rapper from the 2000s, too hard to swallow was like 92, southernplayistilk is 94, do ppl remember master p put out 30 records in one year under no limit, I like new cats too but this should be for the old south

  24. cpmedia81 says:

money rich i agree… ppl talking bout luda ti and jeezy all of them good but to early to honor. they better not fuk this up like they did the def jam one

  25. UPTStunta says:

Thats gonna be wack! They shouldn’t do a whole region. The south does have some legends but the east and west needs recognition as well. The key to hip-hop is integration. I don’t wanna see a whole show of exclusively dedicated to one region. The last honors was some boo boo when they just had Def Jam! Lets see a mix of rap legends from different areas. If they are going to do the south here is my recommendation: The Geto Boys, 8 ball & MJG, UGK, Scarface solo, Dj Screw, and J Prince should get the lifetime achievement award. But on the real, having a whole region only honored wack. Vh1 has turned the Hip-Hop honors award into some boo-boo.

  26. UPTStunta says:

TI AND YOUNG JEEZY ARE NOT LEGENDARY YET!! PLEASE DO NOT MENTION THERE NAMES IN THIS POST! That is all

  27. Shawn says:

    @What the Fuck
Album sales aren’t the criteria and sole justification to get in… Luda and TI arent Legendary.. at least right now. I don’t think eithe of them have made significant contributions to Hip Hop, unless you think DTP and anybody from GrandHustle has helped that cause.
If we’re using record sale logic then throw in… Vanilla Ice.
I think they’re are great be no defining moments or songs that have shifted the culture in a major way.. Just my opinion.

  28. Will says:

no disrespect but how does the south get recognition before the East Mafioso Rap and West Coast Im puzzled thats like them saying they going to honor Wayne before They Honor Jay

I think this year shouldve been Em Jay Nas and just spend the show with everybody performing they best material that can take up the whole Night Me personally I Think Nas And Jay have been avoiding Hiphop Honors

Becuz it makes no Sense Snoop Getting Nominated Before Nas when they debuts werent that far from each other and Jay not being there for the Def Jam Celebration IDK it just seem weird

  29. Will says:

i dont understand how south style gets own before west coast Funk Niggas Is wilding Man Lowkey the west still is an originator in some of the shit going on today Style-Chucc’s and Loccs Songs-Autotune Persona-Everybody a blood now Like I dont see what is original about the south if it wasnt for the east and west setting it off the south wouldnt be as blended as they are right now

But hey this VH1 who said Lil Wayne’s the Blocc is Hot is a Top 50 hiphop song evermade LOL

  30. james bond says:

haha @ the complaints….cryin ass babies…Who cares!! show you dont care by not watching the crap. But most of you punks are hypocritical…fuck around and turn ya tubes on anyway to see the fuckery thats been coming out the south. Ludacris, TI, or any other that blew around 2000 should be even mentioned yet. Wayne included dickridahs. But we know what this is, so why even pay any attention. Fuck the networks, I’m still playing that old Rae’ and Biggie. Fuck what you heard

  31. RU210 says:

They better honor DJ Screw and SUC

  32. devante says:

Lol the south sat back for 20 years and watch the east & west do their thang.
now when they finnaly getting their shine every hates on em.

  33. ???? still best rite now!! says:

lol@ 703 saying “the South doesn’t have enough history” what? are you 13 or sumthin homie?

it doesn’t “appear” shit about the South being honored! only MIA from that tweet…but if they did hit the South……

    UGK

    SCARFACE

MASTER P & NO LIMIT flatout!!!!!

  34. Reasy F. says:

I hope Outkast gets love as well..

  35. NIGGA says:

    3 STAX
    BUN-B
    SCARFACE

    THATS IT!!!

LUDA GOT DEF JAM AND HE FROM CHI

  36. B. Digital says:

    1. Scarface – The God Father of Southern Rap.

    2. UGK – If you are from the south, more than likely you have a UGK album.

    3. 8 Ball & MJG – They had some very good albums in the 90s.

    4. OutKast – IMO top 5 rap group. They often pushed the boundaries of rap.

    5. DJ Screw – Literally, changed the sound of the south.

    Honorable Mention:

Master P: He chose quantity over quality, and for that reason he gets left out.

Luke – He’s one of the reasons for the “Parental Sticker” on albums, popularized strip club music, and put Miami on the map. But he was never lyrical.

Someone mentioned Lil Wayne, T.I. , Luda, and Young Jeezy and they really didn’t become popular until the 2000s.. You have to honor the people that came before you first.

  37. 757CYPES says:

SCARFACE GETO BOYZ MATTER OF FACT THE WHOLE RAP ALOT FAMILY THE DUNGEON FAM ITS MORE THAN MIAMI

  38. StudioThugKilla says:

The South deserves it. The South was the underdog in hip-hop for years and now all of sudden everyone wants to hate. New York says the should get a tribute but all of the New York rappers (pioneers included) get their own separate honors. Its should definitely be more West rappers to get honored (DJ Quik, E-40, Richie Rich, Spice 1, MC Eiht, King Tee and even Hammer). And for the person who people saying the South doesnt have enough history shoot yourself. Every city in the south that has achieved success has had theyre own musical background Miami: Bass, New Orleans: Jazz & Bounce, Texas: Rap-A-Lot, UGK & Screw, Memphis: Gangsta Walkin 8Ball & MJG, Three Six, Gangsta Blac, Atlanta had Kilo, Parental Advisory, Success-N-Effect, Shy-D, etc
    so th history is there.

  39. Shawn says:

Nobody is hating on the south. So let’s stop using that lame ass lable to put on folks that disagree..
@B. Digital.. That is the most accurate list. However P should be honored. Executives have been honored in the past. And Wayne been Rockin since about 97-98, maybe longer.

    @Studio Thug Killa..
I can go with Quick, E-40, Short Hammer. Don’t know if the others could be considered legendary..
And just so we clear I’m from NY and don’t think Pun should be honored, as someone else mentioned..
Also let’s remember that a lot of folks don’t want the “Honor”. So of these dudes feel like they still have somthing in the tank and this dates them and makes them old (why Meth is wearing the “I’m not old school” shirt when Wu was Honored)..
Cube, Snoop, NWA and Eazy have been honor with no beef or lip from the East. We recognize contributors. But that blanket label of “hater” is lame. State your case.. This is suppose to be like a Hall Of Fame. So no 69 Boyz, Silk the Shocker and Lil Keke can’t get in FOH..
Aight.. I’m off my Soap Box

  40. mac DIESEL says:

OUTKAST SCARFACE (GETO BOYS) 2 LIVE CREW J PRINCE UGK!!!!! THAT’S ABOUT IT!!!! TI N LUDA STILL KINDA NEW TO THE GAME!!!!! STILL GOT SHIT TO PROVE!!!!! OVERALL, THE SOUTH IS WACK!!!! CHITLIN RAP TOOK OVER DOWN THERE!!!! IT’S A FUCKIN’ SHAME WHEN U GOT TALENT LIKE J COLE N LIL BROTHER!!!! HONORING THE WHOLE SOUTH REGION WHEN U GOT WACKA FLAKA GUCCI MANE OJ DA JUICEMAN ETC.. REPPIN’ THE SOUTH WOULD BE A CRIME N TRAVESTY!!!!! DON’T FUCK IT UP VH1!!!!

    CHITLIN RAP GET THE GUNCLAP!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  41. GtownHoyasDC says:

That’s totally fucked up if they can’t represent southern artists seperately. The essentials should be Scarface & the Geto Boys, OutKast, UGK, among others. The South has enough great artists to represent themselves indivually…

And any of ya’ll mentioning Luda, Weezy, T.I., and Jeezy should get slapped. No way in hell they get in before Uncle Luke, 8 Ball & MJG, Goodie, Mob, etc.

The need to add variety to. Throw in the Pharcyde and Gang Starr for starters. Can’t belive they put in Missy Elliot before these folks….

  42. GtownHoyasDC says:

Nas and Dr. Dre would be nice, too…..

  43. […] told you that the next VH1 Hip-Hop Honors would be dedicated solely to the South. Well here’s the King […]
