Drake Talks Mixtape vs. Album

[vodpod id=Video.3494450&w=425&h=350&fv=configParams%3Dinstance%3Dnews%26amp%3Bvid%3D508494]

Drake explains to Sway his methodology when approaching a mixtape versus an album. In his own words, he says:

“A mixtape can’t be the songs that don’t make your album, or songs that aren’t good enough to make your album make your mixtape — unless you’re that good. There aren’t that many people that are that good. I’m not that good. That mixtape [So Far Gone] is me working my hardest. It wasn’t ‘Oh, here are the songs I’m gonna give away to you ’cause I have better songs coming.’ A mixtape has become an album.

In some regards, Drake’s right. Although an album still is an album, a mixtape serves as a litmus test. Sway mentioned that the last new rapper to have a significant impact was 50 Cent. Not only was Fif’s tape 50 Cent Is The Future good, but it lead to something even better: Get Rich Or Tryin’. We’ll see if the cards are in Drizzy’s favor June 15th.

Good luck with that Drake. You are a very hard worker and I do think you do know you level when it comes to the game. I do agree with you 100% on that, now can you just stop flapping gums and give us a good video along with that album. Pretty Please?????

  2. E_ says:

smfh. give 50 cent the props he deserves. son invented the mixtape game. if it wasn’t for 50 a lot of y’all won’t have a career.

  3. john macabee says:

No Mercy No Fear > 50 cent Is The Future

  4. B.Dot says:

    i forgot to add “NEW”

i wouldnt say invented, but DEFINETLY set the blueprint.

No Mercy No Fear > 50 cent Is The Future

    quiet as kept, ur right.

  5. E_ says:

    @B.Dot

who was the 1st rapper to make a mixtape in song format ?..lol..all those rapper followed fif.

  6. B.Dot says:

i agree. i’m not takin NOTHING away from 50 at all.

  7. Sarcastic says:

Drake is a loser, i dnt kno him personally but i want to see him fail because it will make my life so much better and the fact that i kno he won’t fail makes me madder, because i am juss that low of an individual that i wish failure onto other brothas who i dnt like but millions admire. Yea his mixtape did alright, was only one the top mixtapes in a decade that sold over 300k wen it was re-released, and yea Best I Ever Had was number 2 on the billboard charts over country singers and rock bands and even Taylor Swift, but he still sucks tho…..

  8. E_ says:

    @Sarcastic

actually fif’s “guess who’s back” mixtape sold 1mil in the states, and considering he had no radio airplay or any hits. lol

  9. iHATEhaters says:

how many classic mixtapes did fif and gunit have ? ? im still playing them now . . wish someone came out now and dropped that much material . . . ah to be back in the early 2000’s . .

  10. iHATEhaters says:

    @E
that mixtape sold 500,00 still as you said with no airplay or hits its still big numbers. . .

  11. cp3 says:

That nigga will never have a quarter of the career 50 has. B.o.B. came and took his shine. best I Ever Had wasn’t even a great song. Radio is trying to program people. So Far Gone was a nice mixtape but he shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence as 50. That’s what you call a true grind, that nigga damn near lost his life and took down an entire label.

  12. Nathaniel says:

goodl luck with that, maybe he shouldn’t have gone so hard on the mixtape. cuz Thank Me Later is sounding like So Far Gone Revisited.

    zero growth

    @iHATEhaters

it sold around 400,000 …but who’s counting right? riiiiiight.

  13. Rhyme says:

Not happening. Kiddo cant make them Epic hits like Wanksta or In The Club.
50 came out the gate swinging, No bullshit tracks like Drake’s making already.

The media and labels should not have ever compared hit start to 50’s because as we can all see now, he’s no 50 Cent.

What were 50’s first 3 singles? Wanksta, In The Club & P.I.M.P.
Good lawd Drake cant duplicate that. Shit the last artist before 50 to kill the game was Snoop in 94. Drake not even on that level. Doggiestlye had the hood on smash.

300K tops first week, and most will cop to see what all the fuss is about.

  14. Can I Kick It? says:

Hip Hop is from the streets of New York. A real Hip Hop fan don’t listen to a rich Canadian actor aka Drake.

  15. thatdude says:

Grow up Kick it, Just cause a dude isnt from NY his music isn’t good? Get off your horse.

  16. So Icy Boi! says:

Who gives a fuk 50 Cent washed up!

  17. CaniBlog? says:

^^^^ Can I Kick IT? ^^^ Stop Swagger Jackin SON!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. CaniBlog? says:

Guess Who’s Back? >>>>>> No Mercy No Fear >>>>>>> 50 Cent is The Future

Trust Me I’ve Listened To all That Shit.

Guess Who’s Back? was the mixtape Eminem first heard which led him to sign Fifty.

its also probably 50’s best work besides GRODT.

  19. LKing says:

50 in his prime>>>>Drake in his prime

    That is the bottomline kids.

  20. Big G says:

What about The Game? dude sold 5 mill when he came out. not 50 numbers but he’s the last new rapper to go at least 5 mil

  21. Drucifer1983 says:

Mark my words, Drake’s numbers are gonna be no where near as high as people are expecting

  22. Big Mak says:

It makes me laugh how one day this little rich kid told daddy he wanted to be a rapper. Hes so overrated. A watered down Wayne at the most. And we all know how terrible Wayne is. But yeah, 50 put mix tapes on the map. Give him the props he deserves.

Drakes just an arrogant cocky punk. Comparing himself to Jay Z when hes a year into his so called ”career”?.

Anyone who questions what i just put above, Im just gonna say this. Look at his first line from ”Forever”.

”Last name ever, first name Greatest”. He’d been in the game two months and hes putting himself over 2Pac, Big L, Eminem, Jay Z, Nas, Biggie, Snoop, Rakim, Run DMC, Ice Cube, Big Pun etc etc.

This Club rap phase will come to an end, and not soon enough.

  23. Eric_Wright says:

Drake trying to sound smart and shit, how does he know what made an album and what didn’t? furthermore most OFFICIAL mixtapes almost always feature original flows over popular beats…
sorry drake but rappers already got that figured out… maybe you only got 13 hot songs and the rest are trash out of how many you made for your album and thats why you gotta work so “hard” to do a mix tape… bottom line drake is saying he sucks, and it takes him a long ass time to make one good song, and that he won’t be puttin out a mixtape with his album cause he just can’t, he started off good with his mixtape but he is now a product of the radio and industry…

  24. L'whm says:

50 has soooooooo many dick riders

  25. Drake&50 fan says:

Drake’s shit is gonna sell like dope in Brooklyn. No doubt 50’s early career was the shit but it’d take the right time and right rapper to re-create that again. Drake’s shit isn’t the same as 50’s shit, so u can compare Soundscan #s n shit but my 2 cents says that Drake album gonna blow up regardless.

  26. Eazzy Knowledge says:

Why the unneccesary competition in the game_ love all artist and their versatility
Drake is Nice 50 is nice different styles__no biggie
The game is biig enough for all styles and opinions–no need to hate(Fans or Artist)
Love will stretch the game for all. Hip Hop forever__No moe assinations
Jigga provided thye bluprint HOVA is great although he aint no GOD

Save those for your Post-Death Library Leaks (Michael Jackson…Tupac…Aliyah…).  Again, your EP should be tracks that may not have made it to the album but are of such a caliber that it makes me think, “If this didn’t get on the album then the stuff on the album is 1000x better!  I think I will buy one for everybody!” […]
