“Scratch something”

In this portion of Kent’s interview with Sean C & LV, the producer reflects on the making of Jay’s and B.I.G.’s classic, “Brooklyn’s Finest” and how difficult it was coming up with the hook for the track before he himself laid it down. Nicely done, sir.

I SWEAR I WAS WONDERING HOW JAY & BIG MADE THIS TRACK YESTERDAY. IM SHOCKED TO LEARN THAT JAY DID HIS SHIT IN 15MINUTES AND BIG HELD ON TO THE BEAT FOR 2 MONTHS. THIS IS WHY I STILL FEEL AND I GOT TO BE REAL BUT REASONABLE DOUBT IS MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME. I THINK THIS CLARK KENT INTERVIEW PRETTY MUCHED SUMMED IT UP 4 ME AND IM THE BIGGEST TUPAC FAN. IM ALSO A PERSON WHO CAME UP ON PAID IN FULL, LONG LIVE THE KANE, ROAD TO THE RICHES, CRIMINAL MINDED AND DOWN BY LAW. SO YOU KNOW I KNOW HIP HOP AND ALTHOUGH JIGGA BRAGGED ABOUT THE DRUG GAME IN THIS ALBUM IT WAS JUST THE WAY HE DID IT.

BACK TO THE SUBJECT>>>> THIS IS GOT TO BE A LESSON LEARN FOR PEOPLE THAT JAYZ WOULD HAVE RISEN TO THE TOP WITHOUT BIG DYING. IT WENT QUICKER AFTER BIG DEATH BUT I THINK REASONABLE DOUBT IS BETTER THAN READY TO DIE AND LIFE AFTER DEATH AND IT MAYBE NECK 2 NECK WITH ME AGAINST THE WORLD.

15 MINUTES COMPARED TO 2 MONTHS SAYS ALOT ABOUT THE 2 ARTIST AND JAY Z HAS PROVEN TO US THAT HE HASNT WRITTEN A SONG SINCE CAN I LIVE, WHICH IS WHY JAY IS CONSIDERED GOAT. WHERE AS PEOPLE GIVE EMINEM MOST PRAISE BUT HE WRITES. WHEREAS JAYZ MADE MAYBE 10 ALBUMS WITHOUT A PEN SO HOW IS EMINEM GREATER THAN JAY Z?!

OVERALL GREAT INTERVIEW I WISH THEIR WAS MORE ON THE ALBUM OR THE YEAR 1996 BOUGHT OUT SOME GREAT ALBUMS.

What makes an artist great is not the process but the final product. It’s not like Jay recorded his album in 2 weeks or a month. He was recording his album for about a year before it came out. So that means there were some records that was created that didn’t meet Clark or Dame’s creative standards. And there is nothing wrong with taking your time to create a masterpiece. And when Reasonable Doubt did hit the market, he still wasn’t the hottest guy in the game at that time nor did he have the hottest album in the game at that time. What albums & artist were hotter than Jay-Z in ’96? The following:

    Ironman – Ghostface Killah
Hell on Earth – Mobb Deep
    ATLiens – Outkast
    The Score – Fugees
    Muddy Waters – Redman
All Eyez On Me – 2pac
    Hard Core – Lil’ Kim
The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory – Makaveli (2pac came out 2 months after he died)

So understand just because someone takes longer to record doesn’t mean that they are not great. It just means that they take pride in the finished product and they want to make sure that they don’t put no bullshit out. Plus you need the right team behind you and in the studio to have heat ready for you to record on. And I don’t know if Jay would have surpassed Big. Big had the stronger team at the time and every hot producer in the game would have given Big first dibs on all hot beats and The Hitmen were no joke with the beats. The power in the pen is strong.

  9. Majest says:

I dnt believe niggas could do that shit…I think is just a method of making yourself as an artist.especially on an album like reason doubt that was well thought out..jay said himself that reasonable doubt was a body of work of like 20 years.(years of being almost completely focus on your music)..switching topics tho that’s why drake cnt recreate so far gone(he said he’ll spend countless amount of time finding the perfect words to fit in his rhymes…he no longer has that option.life has changed, plus u never get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression.back to it tho…if you’re a song writer u write song everyday,u memorize them.when u visit that super producer u match ur lyrics to compatible beat or tell the producer to produce a beat around ur lyrics.to the seeing you do this it amazes them & boosts ur artistic creditability.jay is a master at building a brand of creating that magic which Alot of artist know shit about.legends are always in artist form..they dnt take a day off…which it’s difficult when u are the brand in this internets era.take that bitch!!!!

  12. NEGRITO says:

@ THAT CLOWN NIGGA “4 WHAT” what i think is you dont like the fact i put Jigga over ya favorite Eminem and u dont like Jay but anyways fuck you to…damn i hate internet thugging but fuck u anyways….lmao

  13. NEGRITO says:

@longwinded U BASICALLY TOOK MY COMMENT 2 DA LEFT, IF U READ IT AGAIN U WILL SEE THAT NONE OF WHAT U SAID IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS SAYING. LIKE ALL THE OTHER RAPPERS YOU MENTION, AT THE VERY END OF MY COMMENT I STATED THAT ALL THE OTHER ALBUMS THAT CAME OUT IN 1996. I DIDNT SAY JAY WOULD HAVE BECAME BIGGER THAN BIG, I SAID HE WOULD HAVE RISEN TO THE TOP WITHOUT BIG DYING BUT HIS DEATH MADE IT HAPPEN QUICKER. U GUYS GOTTA READ MAN LIKE IM READING YOURS.

AND AGAIN TO “4WHAT” U REALLY NEED TO READ DOG. U GAVE IT AWAY BY USING THE WORD DESPICABLE> eminem NEW SHIT. I KNOW U HATE JIGGA AS MUCH AS I FUCKING HATE eminem!

  14. classic shit. few things i love more than this type of insight into the process. here’s my insight as a historian:

i want to add that jay had the record for a long while, too, b4 dropping his verses. so the fact that B.I.G. took the track home and didn’t just come up with something the second he got in the studio is kind of unfair to critique. it’s like you’re trying to find a way to say jay > big. maybe so, but this is not really a fair comparison.

btw, since all these rappers like to talk about how they don’t write, Nas freestyled a lot of Illmatic. this is FACT. Preemo said it himself in an article. FREESTYLED NY State of Mind.

I heard from a producer that Jay punches in a lot. like thinks up a line or two raps them, then thinks up more and they just punch it all in. so that’s why they don’t write in some cases.

i believe some just get high as hell and go off the top, too. Wayne, Snoop, Cam’Ron. but sometimes i think they need to sit with a pen and pad and write because they rap stream-of-consciousness drivel (wayne).

also, somebody listed all the albums bigger than reasonable doubt in ’96 but left out Nas It Was Written. in 96 Nas was absolutely bigger than Jay. hell i’d say the Dogg Pound was bigger than Jay. he just wasn’t that huge right out the gate. in those days it was ALL about Bad Boy and Death Row, 2pac, Big.
