Slept On: N.O.R.E. “Grimey” & “Bang Bang”

Truthfully, Ice Cube was supposed to kick this column off. He told me his song “Supreme Hustle” off War & Peace Vol. 2 (The Peace Disc) was criminally slept on. Unfortunately, his explanation was deleted on my recorder. Damn. But the show must go on and to usher things in the right way is Noreaga. N.O. reasons that “Grimey” off God’s Favorite should’ve been bigger and thinks “Bang Bang” was marred by the shooting outside Hot 97.

Bang, Bang was marred by the hot 97 shooting. As i remember that song was “supposed” or at least blamed for the shooting. That album had a bunch of bangers on it….”YA’LL DON’T WANNA F– WITH US”, The Queens joint, and “i’ll murder you, and you …..don’t give a fuck about you…etc.”

They need a BangBang pt2 with a better rapchick. Hard to find though, Nikki is not hard or dope at all. But it would be bangin for a part 2. Foxy Brown is tired.

Grimey was that shit back in the summer of “01”. They shoulda continued the video after that Busta joint went off. The Neptunes were that shit back then. Hell, music was great back then. I think Def Jam dropped the ball on N.O.R.E’s album. “Nothin” was that shit too and “Bang Bang” was hard as well. After that, when Nore signed to Rocafella, he fell off.

The Hot 97 shooting was in Feb. 2001. “Grimey” came out summer of 2001. I don’t know how the shooting hurt the record when it was getting airplay on Hot 97 all summer. The thing that hurt “Grimey” was that it was hot during the summer but they didn’t release a video for it until Oct.-Nov. of 2001. I mean, they had a little teaser for the song at the end of Busta’s “What It Is” video (which was also out in the summer) and both songs were getting airplay in the tri-state area.

The late video killed his momentum so they tried to get his buzz back by releasing “Nahmeanuheard” and “Live My Life”, which didn’t work. Then he dropped “Nothin'” and it was a wrap. That joint kinda owned summer 2002.

“God’s Favorite” was one of the best albums of 2001. I’ll always have fond memories of working in Washington Heights in New York and all of northern NYC loving Nore. Everywhere you went you heard a cut from that album.
