Talib Kweli On Gucci Collab Criticism

While Talib preps his new album Prisoner Of Conscious, he recently caught flack for his collaboration with Gucci Mane. In particular, an article from TheLoop21’s Mychal Smith took him to task. Well Kweli fires back.

“Now I don’t know Mychal Smith, but what I do know is he is a blogger that follows me on Twitter, and I guess my decision to record with Gucci Mane bothered him enough to blog about it, declaring my move a part of the demise of the conscious rapper. I offer a different take. I say people like Mychal Smith are every bit as caught up in the flashing lights as the ‘ignorant’ masses they like to judge. Instead of celebrating it, they get joy from speaking against it. They truly believe not liking Gucci Mane makes them intellectually superior to say, some chick down south. They pay so much attention to what they perceive to be negative, based on a limited world view, that they miss the positive, even when it’s right in their face.”

  2. translation... says:

yeah im a sell out so what…smh. next up soulja boy andn hes going to try to justify himself on working with him too.

  3. ABC says:

    FUCK TALIB KWELI…

  4. Nathaniel says:

    @DARKAQUA i don’t think it’s necessarily about money. but i understand what you’re saying.

in any case, i think this says it all:

“They truly believe not liking Gucci Mane makes them intellectually superior to say, some chic down south. They pay so much attention to what they perceive to be negative, based on a limited world view, that they miss the positive, even when it’s right in their face.”

^the positive is unity. i tell niggas all the time, these pigeonholed “conscious emcees” do little good making music to a slew of niggas who think, read, and live the exact shit (more or less) that they listening to. that’s like malcolm x doing countless speeches to an auditorium full of malcolm x’s. it’s unproductive. what rap and hip hop has needed for a long time is bridging the gap. we didn’t create these labels “gangsta” “conscious” “backpacker” “nerd” “snap music” “crunk” rap anyway. talib on a gucci album exposes an entire new demographic to talib and what he’s about, and true talib fans may be able to expand their limited world view (like he said os mychal smith) and understand what’s real about what gucci does. 2010, correct the mistakes of division in the past and lets all build together. i salute kweli and la flare.

  5. Nathaniel says:

    like Q-Tip said:

“progression can’t be made if we separate forever”…. real shit.

  6. wickwickwack says:

its not selling out … he´s doing what he thinks best
honestly i rather hear a talib black eyed peas song instead of gucci mane

this guy dumbs it down to the fullest …a collabo doesnt make sense

i still didnt forgive gucci for ruining z-ro “haters got me wrong”

  8. Ultrakid says:

Well what can I say…Kweli is an educated dude who’s not a hater and he’s the TRUTH!!! I wish there was more Hip Hop fans like him…I still don’t like Gucci but I know good rappers in the game who do and Talib is obviously one of them and I don’t hate him for liking the dude either–I’m also not going to call him a sell-out either.

  9. Ben says:

Not mad at Talib. Would you guys put Kweli in your top 10 lyrically of all time?

  10. Ultrakid says:

    ^^^
    HELL YEAH!!!

  11. YYY says:

Some body had to say it. Talib’s the man.

  12. Black By Popular Demand says:

it’s all about that paper at the end of the day…. talib could have chosen a better collabo than gucci though… but fuck it. talib needs a come up…. he’s in hip-hop pergatory… in that zone of “we wouldn’t miss you if you never made a record again but you’re really are a dope ass mc”

  13. Ultrakid says:

Talib Kweli needs to Kanye, No I.D., Jay Electronica, Madlib, Hi-Tek, Just Blaze, Q-Tip, and Pete Rock to produce his new album and he should feature J. Cole, Lupe Fiasco, and Blu.

  14. jeeeeeeezzer says:

we all kno gucci one a tha hottest mcs in years.. Ya’ll juss hatin on a brotha cus he do real music. Fuck all dem teen orientated collabos wid haley fuckin williams or the world biggest hoe aka rihana.

  20. So Icy Boi! says:

Maybe Talib Kweli fans want him to stay irrelevant forever …

  21. Deangelobailey says:

This is the only Gucci song on my IPod. Talib does his thing as usual.

Talib is top 5 alive, but don’t take my word for it he gets respected by the best MC’s.

  22. Random says:

Irrelvant no just not put out music that demeans the work he already done, I have no problem with it. It’s his career but atleast be honest when someone questions you. Just say it was your label or it was a nice check.

  23. WELL SAID I AM IN FULL AGREEMENT THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPES OF IGNORANCE AND HAVING KNOWLEDGE AND USING IT TO JUDGE AND NOT EDUCATE IS A FORM OF IGNORANCE.

  24. SOME CONSCIOUS MIND PEOPLE PREACH ABOUT WANTING CHANGE BUT INSTEAD OF GOING TO OUR PEOPLE AND EXPOSE THEM TO A DIFFERENT WAY OF THINKING THERE ARGUMENT IS TO ELIMINATE OR SEPARATE WHICH IS THE WORST STRATEGY TO SPREAD KNOWLEDGE THEIR ARE A LOT PEOPLE WHO ARE MORE IGNORANT THAN THEY KNOW.

  25. Poindexter says:

Gucci is a fake nigga.. while Talib is a real nigga.. so why would talib collab with him? Idk… talib desperate? Reflection eternal album not sellin well?

  26. TopBananas says:

When I saw the track on paper I was like “oh hell no!” But it’s not like Talib didn’t spit on it, look at the first 4 bars. And how’s he selling out when Reflection Eternal dropped a solid a$$ album a few months back? If Andre was on it and bodied it, no one would have said sh^t.

  27. Crasshole says:

@Nathaniel hit the nail on the head

If y’all are really fans of Kweli and feel his message then you would understand the importance of him working with a rapper like Gucci and trying to reach his fanbase. Have y’all even heard the song?

  28. JERZZZ says:

“They truly believe not liking Gucci Mane makes them intellectually superior to say, some chick down south”

Yes we do Nigga. because we appreciate literacy in this country, and thats just 1 of a million reasons why.

  29. Dez says:

not a Gucci fan, huge Kweli fan and I ain’t mad at him doing it… I get it

  30. I FART THEY INHALE says:

so gucci is prolly the best lyricist in the game right now talib should please and suck that nigga dick dry to work with gooch .burrrr

  31. Nijea says:

Hell naw! FuCk what he talking! I was piss to hear that he worked with dude foul wack ass! Like why would you do that? He’ll lose his true fans doing that, because all real hiphhop heads love real meaning in rap. That nonsense hell pulled will hurt him. . PLEASE DON’T DO IT AGAIN!

  32. !ShootDontPlease says:

    Co-sign JERZZZ

Lmao at “I fart they inhale”s name and comment

    http://twitter.com/PaulNeeb88

  33. patrickBATEMAN says:

i don’t care what kweli says about this one?! i am in a state of shock that he’d even consider choppin’ it up with gucci mane?! WHAT?! obviously if he’s catching flack, something was out of place there, right? kweli is one of the nicest emcees ever, but this doesn’t get a pass from me.

  34. freakshow says:

Talib Kweli tried to justify his collaboration with Gucci Mane as a sign of unity. I look at it as a sign of confusion. The very thing he says on his verses are anti-Gucci Mane. Listen and you will hear.

  35. L4U says:

He’s just making his fan base bigger that’s all. But I kind of see where the blogger is coming from too like what’s NEXT!!!

  36. […] Talib Kweli responds to the flack he has received from recording with Gucci Mane. [RapRadar] […]

  37. Suberoo says:

I fucked with both artists before the collaboration, I’m a southern nigga who appreciates all music as long as it is true to the artists’ self. Talib spit what was real to him on the song and so did gucci. i love how you guys hate on gucci when obviously the world is loving the nigga right now. stop hating on talib, he probably is entertained by gucci’s music like me. aint that what it is? entertainment? Who the fuck wanna be taken to school all the time listening to conscious rap all the time. i got my own mind, why listen to what another nigga thinking bout. rather be entertained, they are in the entertainment business you dumb fucks.
