Although Fat Joe’s Darkside Vol.1 is in stores today, he took time out with MTV to praise DJ Premier and Guru. Oh yeah, Joe’s show goes down tonight at S.O.B.’s. Be there or be square.

“It feels like Gang Starr is the purest group in hip-hop,” Joe declared. “They was shooting videos on the beach in the winter when the water was ice. Razor-blade music. A bunch of guys in front of the project steps. ‘Mass Appeal,’ ‘Dwyck.’ ‘Stick up kids just out to tax … ‘ It’s just so much, man. When [Guru] passed, and I’m hearing all these rumors, I just wanna kill everybody. I want to shoot the computer, ’cause I’m like, ‘No, this ain’t what we do when our legends, our icons, pass. We salute them. We don’t go for rumors; we salute these dudes.’ He was an icon, man. It’s the purest group in hip-hop, in my opinion. DJ Premier, this guy is like a god, a walking god. Guru, he put it down legendary.

“Preemo, I was waiting for Preemo to give me a ‘Ten Crack Commandments’ or a shoot ’em up, bang bang,” he continued, recalling his expectations when he got the track for “I’m Gone.” “He sent me the beat when Guru died — the day Guru died. It was a somber … sad beat. I was like, ‘Ah, man.’ I knew where to go with it. It really troubled me and I knew Guru passed away. I knew Preemo was hurting; I been through that with Pun. I knew how it felt. I had to pay homage and salute.”

  2. Toss says:

I agree with joe. gang starr was hip hop in its purest form. period.

  3. dashing says:

Yeah, that’s big of Joe to do on the day when he could make it all about him and his album. Guru really didn’t get the memorial that he deserved. Can blame Solar a little but very few media streams (RR excluded) repped him the way they should have. Would have liked to see more big figures within the culture(Jay, Nas, Wu, Busta) say something too.

  4. Marie says:

I was’nt able to make it to the Tribute to Guru held at Brooklyn Museum this past Sunday; anybody here go……..how did it come off?

PAY ATTENTION TO THIS FAT NIGGA FROM THE START OF HIS CARRER, HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A DICK RIDAH AND I USED TO SUPPORT HIS MOVEMENT. REMEMBER HE HAD THE FATJOE 360 LINE I HAD SOME OF THOSE T-SHIRTS

  9. Sho Nuff says:

Congrats amazinace and TEFLON DON, I figured some one would find a way to spread some kinda hate after a clip like that though it would seem impossible. Just no winning w/ some of u internet tough guys…smfh

  10. JustinTime says:

Gotta respect dude. However, I shun all the magazines. Vibe, XXL, Source…No Guru rip cover? Disgusting. BET not honoring Guru at the awards show? Disgusting. HBO Entourage season 7 premiere closing credits…Above The Clouds tribute..Priceless

  12. Who shot ya says:

Justin I agree, I love hip-hop, that’s one culture where I know where, how,& when it started. These rap mags., & radio is so disrepectful. I think one of the reasons KRS went west, was due to the fact they just tossed Jim aside along with all the other greats. Here in NY you have radio program directors from the west coast. Soon after everything you hear is that south music. I believe in progression, but come on Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy and all those jingle jangle tune guys would’ve never blown up. Like it or not I think Jay-Z keeps his name out there, is due to the fact that he knows these radio & rap mags., will do him like they did KRS 1, KoolG Rap, DeLa Soul, etc… That’s why he dropped BP3, and to make matters worse the DJ’s, & writers from NY contributed to the lack of redpect for our cultural icons. Just so they can keep a job, personalized their dislike of an artist, rather than critic their music. Believe it or not the only sincere media person right now is Miss Info, no disrespect RR, but your agenda is economically different than her cultural spirit of hip hop. My opinion, peace to all of HipHop.
