How can a person go to jail in 2002 for a traffic violation and be in jail for 8 years?

He had a traffic violation in 2002 in California, but has avoided going back there, and so now with the desire of going back back to cali cali , he wanted to clear up his name. He got out of Arizona prison earlier this summer, and decided to turn himself in in California. It was in an interview a little while ago.
another site is reporting he got stopped hours after for driving w/out a valid license and got issued a citation. back in court in a few weeks.
