Q-Tip stopped by the XXL offices yesterday and gave an update on the status of his upcoming book, Industry Rules. He says it will be co-authored by dream hampton and will include anecdotes from his experiences in the rap game.

Tips a legend but his “industry” (88-98) and this “industry” (post 05) are two very different worlds.

If you remember the Fade to Black film, Q-tip would actually advise not only Jay-Z but Nas (and many others). He’s well respected. I think Tip knows the industry pretty damn well. Whether its 88, 98 or 2010, its not like the industry protocol changes all that much.
1) Rape new Artists for their talent
2) Force artists into cookie cutter personas. Market said personas to the suburbs for profit
3) Allow artists to become indebted to you
4) Boot artists when they are no longer economically beneficial to you
5) Repeat steps 1-4 with the next new talent
He’s just trying to show y’all how to move in a room full of vultures.

That’s not a shot at Tip by any means. And sure he knows the game. But the game has even changed drastically from Fade To Black. And. With all Due respect Tip stayed in the very same system post ATCQ and Jive.
But the reality… You don’t have a choice. You want a major. You will sign a 360 and virtually become an employee. You don’t have to. Sure you can go indie, grind REAL hard and earn a living. But Dudes don’t want that. They ain’t trying to do $2500 club dates in a 15pass van and stay and stay at the local motel. They want 1st class buses and 4star hotels.
Either way. I respect the idea and shady people are in all forms. Music, Banking, software, tabbaco, pharmaceuticals etc.. Nothing new to tell. You will be fucked, how bad depends on you leverage… Which more artist have now more than ever.
