Nelly Rages Against The Machine

Sunday, November 28 2010 1:48 PM EST | Posted by: B.Dot | Posted in: Blog, True Story

Nelly’s got a chip on his shoulders. Yesterday, he turned to his Twitter account to vent about the lackluster promotion of his current album, 5.0 Apparently, Universal Motown only shipped 200,000 copies. Read up what he had to say below.

A record deal is a 50/50 partnership! As a artist its your job to provide the record company with music that they(record company)can sell! Thing about the partnership is that n the public eye the responsibility is not 50/50!the artist is always the 1who catches 90% of the blame. When a artist doesn’t deliver sufficient material they(artist)gets its budget cut for next album or worse dropped from the label!

So not only is the label ur partner but also disciplinarian and 90% of the time the one who decides if the partnership continues! Nodoubt wen a artist doesn’t deliver a song that does crack top of the charts or even top10 the label is quick to say artist didn’t deliver. So intern the artist must bare the brunt of that failure and take responsibility and consequences as handed out by his or her label!!

So who fault is it when a artist gives the label not only a #1 hit but there first top40 #1 n label history!sell 2mill n singles n 2.5month. Who should be held responsible wen a artist has a history for selling records so its not like a new artist n no1 knows his r her name? Benefit of the doubt: Maybe no1 wants to hear music from that artist?well if that was true then the artist would not have a #1 song! Benefit of the doubt:Maybe no1is checking 4 the artist anymore?Well if that was true then how do u explain selling 2mill singles n 2.5month?

I careless about haters u cant hate on #1song n 2.5mill n singles!but the fact is that some1 need to holdup there end of the partnership! If the music wasn’t good how do u get to #1 and 2.5mill!!but if folks say they didn’t even no wen the album came out????? If u only ship 200thound of an album how many are u f#cking tryen to sell??the artist does control that nor does he or she control marketing. “”5.0″”Every1 luvs da album n say its crazy! So wen u hear folks say they didnt no it was out r there were hardly any n the store!WTF?

  1. So Icy Boi! says:

Nigga shut up! you sold ya soul a long time ago now you aint sellin you mad at the label news flash its not 2000-04 no more u aint a hot topic in hiphop

  2. LT says:

Do they teach grammar in Nellyville? This fool makes the whole rap game look bad…SMH.

  3. Fuck Ya Life says:

It really didn’t matter how many records the label shipped it still wasn’t gonna sell. The label obviously knows there no high demand for Nelly anymore so they did the right thing.

  4. etetew says:

    Banks got undershipped.

Sold out everywhere over here at NY.

    Nelly? not so much

  5. This nigga is blanking! Dam keep bringing up 2.5 mil and #1? Sound like a bitch about it butt i dont blame the bitch! ha 250,0000 what the fuck? They did bank the same way. Create your own label and become the boss if it is this serious than.

  6. Mac Attack says:

200,000? The actually shipped 200,000?? I woulda forecasted 1300 first week.. Be grateful u washed up has been..

  7. Davey boi says:

@fuck ya life agreed. Ain’t nobody checking for nelly.

  8. moreffa says:

    Agree ^^^

nigga noone feeling your shit anymore

all them lil justin Bieber crackers brought that shitty song online
be happy with that 2.5 mill downloads paid for

    i dont believe that number

You should be happy some corny motherfuckers copped 50,000 copy’s of your shit when a cd that now sells 600,000 in the first week is like selling 2 million in 2010

you aint get the memo people dont buy cds anymore

you ungreatfull country ass nigga this aint 2000

  9. Shawn says:

Apparently Nelly did get the memo. Physical cd sales are almost extinct and there is virtually no cd shelf space.
And when a label goes in 50/50 they also expect YOU to use your resouces to promote your album.. You have zero to little presence in the under 25 market. Nobody take you seriously as an artist.. You really havent a had a good verse since “Grillz”..
That “The label ain’t promote my shit” is lame and not even an excuse anymore. You don’t need to promote hit records and great albums.
Nobody gives a shit and the game has changed since you entered in the late 90′s.

  10. moreffa says:

    Shawn is 1005 correct

i hope nelly reads your post

  11. Chris says:

You know you dudes never bitch about this shit until it happens to your favourite rapper (not saying this nigga is mine, but being a Nas fan, the idea of a venting online letter aint foreign) lol

I get where Nelly is coming from, but at the same time outlets are closing year by year and online is where most people are buying their music from anyway. For the label its a matter of people cost effective and not losing money on unsold physical CDs.
Yeah, there is the risk especially hip-hop that cats go for the free bootleg when downloading, but this guy cant complain about lack of promo when his single has been on the radio all the damn time (compare to some Def Jam artists). If the album is dope the crowd will go to i-tunes.

Look at least your label is putting your album out my nigga. Ask Jeezy and The Game how bad its gotten. People worried about selling first week like that shit still matters. We got a bigger battle on our hands now where our favourite rappers cant even get they albums out, let alone promo and outlets.

  12. moreffa says:

this nigga wish he had as many sales as twitter followers

  13. QUEENZ says:

I want the names of the 2million people who bought his single.

  14. The Leader of the Anti-Leak Movement says:

Subject matter… Subject Matter… Subject Matter…. What does this man REALLY have to say thats Artistic?… I never had a problem with Nelly but, C’mon now. Why buy a Nelly album in 2010? Waka Flocka Has took the Spot for the Club Songs….. Shit even the album cover looks Uninspired… C’mon man. 5.0? Get the FUCK OUTTA HERE. Idk why but… Shit just made me upset. But some fucking Effort into it…

  15. dumb dumb says:

Same shit EMI did to Lloyd Banks, I think he could have done 80 to 90 easy, but when you only have 12 CD’s per store, the distributor failed on their end of the bargain. So Nelly they didn’t believe in you and same for you Banks. And, in the words of Dave Chappelle “Tough Break Nigga.”

  16. Mr. 3-Times says:

All comments ^^^ are ridiculously accurate.

I would like to mention that Kanye doesn’t have the same video/radio play he’s used to (although it’s picking up), but his album buzz has been crazy in spite it.

Bottom line is you CANNOT BLAME THE LABEL anymore. It’s wack, it’s corny, its dated. Nelly should know better, and be grateful for what he has (radio gig) and stop acting like a spoiled kid who got it’s toys taken away.

  17. Itz Yourz says:

I feel him. He just got find a new way to market. Everything is online now…thats probably why they only shipped 200,000….but still thats a low count. Damn….think they setting you up to drop you.

  18. The Return of Spillosevic says:

He does know grammar, @LT. It just happens to be country grammar!

  19. tubetraine says:

LOL AT queens i co sign…nelly fell off along time ago , dogg u aint rap your first album was (was an ill album too ) but go cry to JT or some shit ,….

  20. Belize says:

Nelly never has anything interesting to say. Shut up and retire nigga.

  21. Post no billz says:

I knew this was coming after the sales came in.. I personally think no one intrested in a nelly album in 2010-2011..

  22. SHADY says:

STFU NELLY. STOP BLAMING THE LABELS…..YOU DIDNT SELL SHIEEEEEET.
AND LMFAO @ THIS NIGGA FOR THINKING THE LABELS ACTUALLY CARE BOUT HIM AND THINK THEY’LL HELP HIM…SMH

  23. Uh Huh says:

nigga(s) if yal were in his shoes, ud be upset too…
Bottom line yal talkin bout he shud market his shit better (true) but marketing dont really got shit to do with how many CDs get shipped… I mean if im not mistaken

  24. Nah Kid says:

I didnt even know it came out.

    He shoulda did a mixtape.

  25. Esquire says:

His last album was sub par and barley sold 230,000 copies after two years! The label did right; Nelly is half the rapper he use to be.

  26. tubetraine says:

@esquire when was the last time u heard a good 16 or even 8 BARS FROM NELLY DUDE RNB ,. im sure he said he was pissed about not being in the top ten hot mc list like REALLY hes team must big him up like crazy koz they gettin payeddddddd

  27. lol @ So Icey Boy. The nigga sold a million digital downloads. Someone wants to hear his shit. If the label is providing enough product to be purchased the artist cannot be blamed for that.

  28. Shawn says:

And this is the epitome of an “artist” being concerned with accolades and other frivolous shit. How about the fact that NOBODY is receiving you music well? Is that a concern? No hate, but gave hip hop a stiff dick when you decided to Hip country on us.. So all of you artist that use Hip Hop as a stepping stool to your “bigger” career, like Eve (Hows that Hollywood plan working?) don’t get mad when Hip Hop forget about you and ain’t supportive of your shit.

@KeV West, that translates to $1Mil in gross funds generated.. Realtivly peanuts in the grand scheme.. Nobody makes money from singles, at least on that level.

  29. casper21 says:

see the problem for nelly now is his sales trend speaks for itself, he can still create radio singles, but that’s all he can do. Be glad he made some money from singles, everyone know the youngins buying album these days won’t support an album from an artist that peaked a decade ago. But if he was really hoping to use any momentum from a solo album to push a Lunatics record, that hope is dead and gone. No label gonna promote or distribute that project that he can’t move units as a solo artist.

  30. GODZILLA says:

SHUT THE FUCK UP ONE TIME WONDER. YOU WERE ONE FUCKING MINUTE OF YESTERDAY. NOW, FUCK OUTTA RAP. YOU ARE DESTROYING IT.

  31. Black Shady says:

Damn i dont see why all the hate. all I read was REAL TALK from Nelly

  32. Niyemortal says:

I stopped checking for Nelly since he came out to begin with, wasnt really my style even during “Country Grammer” days. I respected that era though cause everybody was eating from Hot Boys to Nas to Mos Def, etc. Times changed though.

  33. Trouble says:

So what if they only shipped out 200k? He only sold 70k the first week so it doesnt really matter.Nelly is over, done and finished. He was finished since he released that awful brass knuckle bullshit.

  34. Rhyme says:

Nelly could have done more for his own project. I seen his promo at the Pacman fight in Dallas.

He should have hit the radio stations and release exclusive music to build a bigger buzz, but he didn’t. He put all his eggs on his #1 single to promote the album. That’s his fault. So what if the label only shipped 200k total, son wasn’t selling out, and he never cracked the top ten on intunes at any point. I was surprised he done 60K.

  35. CTE says:

Man i might just cop a copy of it and then when i see him ima slap this nigger with it! Nigger what i look like listening to this shit when its about to be 2011? Im not no dam school girl! Them 50,000 man are they deaf! He better keep selling them nelly fitness video just like dre pushing them beat headphones! Smfh

  36. NELLY DISCOGRAPHY…

    1st album = 9 x platinum

    2nd album = 6× Platinum

    3rd album = 3× Platinum

    4th album = Platinum

    5th album = Gold

    6th = twitter rant “it’s the label’s fault… I’m wack”

NELLY THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON’T PUT OUT REAL GOOD MUSIC. YOU DECLINE. IT’S NOT HATE, IT’S THE TRUTH. YOUR LATEST ALBUM COVER TELLS THE WHOLE STORY IN ONE.

  37. zilla says:

Man……this cat sold millions…he got every right to vent. That bein said….he outta know better. He know he aint nobody droppin videos left n right like back n the day, nobody selling over a mill first week no more….and that aint nobody buyin physical cds no more. His label probably looked at his last album sales and said….:”if he sell these, we’ll get behind it”. I dont blame em. Nelly….its the independant mans game now homie. All the loot you made….you shoulda been like Cube by now mane…droppin movies….diversifyin. Either that, or drop somethin MAD HOT so the public gotta get back on ya jock fam.

  38. Miss J. says:

Damn. Even women aren’t buying his shit anymore. His album “buzz” was silent as hell, I didn’t even realize he had released 5.0. I think too many other club rappers have filled that void. As a woman, I need something more lyrical and Nelly’s “pretty boy sing-a-long raps” are played out. Oh well, tough luck.

  39. Niyemortal says:

    @Industry Disk Cleanup

    thatss thorough.

and definitely a steady decline, cant deny those facts

  40. yp says:

50 cent or dmx can’t sell right so nellly don’t worry it just the regular decline that a artist goes through

Brass knuckles went gold??? that was wack too i dont know how he went gold??
He Should have done that joint album with T.I. he was talking about 2 years ago instead of releasing these last 2 wack albums. The T.I. features are the only reason i check for a nelly album and the last 2 were trash. he thought he could go away and do movies(Longest Yard) and come back, dont these rappers realize there is no coming back from that, look at Ja Rule,DMX, even 50 cent after GRODT movie his album dont sell like they use too either, one exception to the rule almighty king him self marshall, still sorta applies to him though after 8 mile and then Encore and relapse, but he is on fire now . once you go big screen its a wrap it may not happen right away, but you cant really top your best performance.

  42. moreffa says:

  46. Citylivin' says:

  47. shyt says:

i aint heard a gud song from nelly in a min. …this is the future rite here

    http://www.myspace.com/cflotentative

  48. Shawn says:

@Major VA.. No my friend. These MF’ers toss hip hop aside… When Nelly made a country song do really think he’s was worried about Hip Hop and it’s direction? No he wanted paper.. And that’s cool.. And let’s not make it seem like he’s done anything Buzz worthy in yrs. I like Nelly, but game moves on.. Move with it or don’t. Nelly has made enough coin to actually be on his own. Period. And enough coin to not be obligated to make bullshit records to “sell”. He’s one of few that can dictate his artistic integrity.. His music, unlike Jay or Kanye, hasn’t grown. Nothing about him musically has advanced. It’s the same shit. OVER and OVER.
Rap is like boxing.. A young and hungry mans game. Young and hungry fans and young and hungry artist. Melle Mel, Rakim and G Rap got pushed to the side.. What the fuck makes Nelly beyond the natural profession of the game. Poverty is motivated MF’er and Nelly aint ha that type motivation in yrs…. Now go make a country album and see how much “they” support you.
Let’s take the posters off the wall and the Band aids from under our eyes and look at this from a grown stand point.. At no other point in history has it been easier to get your music to fans, legally an illegally, and with that said… When your shit is not taken in by the fans. It’s genuine. They aint fucking with you.. Go make some straight to DVD movies, a la 50 and STFU.
    (Stepping off soap box)

  49. Shawn says:

@Major.. I didn’t intend that directly you Bro. Just went off on a tangent..
