’10 Disappointing Albums: #1 Nas & Damian Marley Distant Relatives

Tuesday, January 04 2011 6:11 PM EST | Posted by: YN | Posted in: Top 5 Posts, Uncategorized

When was the meeting when the hip-hop nation got together and decided that we wanted Nas to make an album with one of Bob Marley’s sons. I didn’t get the memo. What’s next? Cormega & The Melody Makers? Although many praised this album when it was released last May, ask yourself the last time you actually took the time to listen to this. No real replay value. This project still feels like a comfy blanket Mr. Jones hid under while he battled the personal and professional dramas of the past year. Great art is made from adversity as Kanye’s MBDTF attests, let’s hope the fiery Nas found on the last verse of “Strong Will Continue” prevails in the new year and preachy slop like the Joss Stone and Lil Wayne-guested “My Generation” goes that way. We don’t need world music from one of hip-hop’s finest. We want more boom bap like you can find here. Let’s go Esco!

  3. Yooo says:

I can’t decide which is more retarded – this being #1 as the most disappointing album, or WACKaflocka’s being #1 as the most underrated album. You people are talking so much shit lately, you’re gonna make me want to turn back to allhiphop if shit doesn’t imporove soon.

  4. mdot85 says:

Dag another one imma hafta disagree wit..I feel like this may have been a really slept on album..from content to quality to sound I believe the accomplished what they set out to do..I don’t think it was created to sell a ton of copies but these 2 really had something to say and for them to do it from a diaspora point of view is something that a lot of the youth..and adults need…I can’t really see how u would call this whack and then say Waka was the most underrated..to each his own..but this was one of my top 2010 albums..not my fav but it makes my top 10

  5. ronnie-moe says:

  8. xtrajordinary says:

  13. Niyemortal says:

Wow so FLockaveli was underrated but Distant Relatives was disappointing? Wow!!!

For the record, “Tribal War” is greater than any song in Waka’s career…..

  14. hec1979 says:

Blasphemy you guys really bumped your head on this one, so many other albums deserving of #1 you choose this? This was a very solid album.

  15. Donn says:

  17. thehiphopspot says:

wow. this is the most overrated and waka flocka is the most underrated??? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA wow. talk about favoring the mainstream over the underground. waka flocka has NO knowledge in any of his songs. on top of that his lyrics are some of the weakest ive ever heard. k rino annihilation of the evil machine was by far the most underrated album.

    k rino – the epitome
    k rino – paper hound
    k rino – duality

  18. belly says:

its pretty obvious rapradar just wants hits, and postin shit like this will cause it, i bet at least 100 comments on this post

  19. What the hell? Too early to be aprils fools right…you do know that??? This is one of the best albums on 2010 to me…Sonically different than any other hip hop album that came out. Production wise, it held its own, stood out and away from any other album that came out in 2010. Lyrically…wtf…it’s Nas and Damian Marely..speaks for itself. Also just the message, social content and substance that this album has…Me and my lady still listen to it..and it has never gotten old. It’s one of those album that’ll always be relevant due to the subject matter and grown content of it. You missed your mark with this one being the most disappointing…and that’s a disappointment in itself.

  20. productofme says:

yo, YN, you just lost mad respect on this one. if anything this should have fallen under the most underrated albums of the year. Distant Relatives is in my Top 3 releases of 2010.

Honestly, it needs to win a Grammy. They couldnt have made the collaboration any smoother than what they delivered. its a classic album

  21. beez says:

    what a joke.

  22. Joshua says:

IS THERE A HIP ELITE THAT DECIDES WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR? I GUESS YOU HAD NO PROBLEM WITH JAY-Z AND R.KELLY PUTTING OUT TWO ALBUMS DURING YOUR DAYS AT XXL

  23. Nas Disciple says:

Aye, ya’ll some wack ass niggas @ Rap Radar, man. How the fuck is this the most disapointing album of ’10?

What exactly did you all expect from this shit?

Where is Nicki or Drake’s album? They both where hyped the fuck up and failed to meet expectations.

A whole bunch of faggotry going on with you niggas.

  24. MoonMen says:

Agree with both lists.Nas better fuckin step his game up and make something better than that bullshit distant relatives

  25. KILLA QUEENS says:

YN, you a faggot!!,i listen to a song from that album every day since i bought it. you probably dnt like it because hey used too many big words for you. you a dumb nigga,DR is more than an album its educated. go educate yourself dumb nigga!!

  26. Thank Me Hater says:

@YN But you support Rick Ross though….soooooo insert yourself in the black out or you played yourself section

  27. m says:

Speak for yourself I had this album on repeat for a while

  28. FuckYou says:

All the Nas stans got butthurt over this list.Man fuck off with that.
    Distant Relatives was wack,straight up

  29. Andoi says:

Strongly disagree, album is fucking great, what have you been smoking?

  30. KidKalig says:

Y’all can argue but it’s true. Niggas expect a LOT from Nas and don’t expect shit from Wakka Flocka. That album sucked balls.

  31. elliot says:

    are you serious
like one said:::::: its pretty obvious rapradar just wants hits, and postin shit like this will cause it, i bet at least 100 comments on this post

this site is losing its credibility

  32. reallyb says:

    fuck buying albums

  33. Thank Me Hater says:

All the niggas saying distant relatives was wack are the same niggas that sit up in their rooms and listen to stanky leg on repeat. The album was at least decent on lyricism alone. But what am I saying? This is the age of no substance and hot beats See: (Syllables ft Em, Jay and those other niggas)

  34. happy new year haters! says:

Yn I can’t ride with u on this one. Nas and jr gong made a classic in my eyes. I was able to put a few of my white friends onto nas after lettin them hear the album. I think this album might have been the most under rated album in MUSIC last year. They had some of the realest lyrics on that album and beats are fire ( I like rasta music). I still get spliffed to this joint, leaders is my anthem.

I like street nas, no one does it better, but real talk nas will always be equally welcomed in my stereo until he falls off lyrically.

  35. Stroydnaire says:

I bet if Rick Ross/Drake/Wacka made an album with Sean Paul you guys would get an instant erection! C’mon Son! This post gets the dillz!!!!

  36. NotoriousRambo says:

**BITCH SLAPS YN** RAPRADAR IS BECOMING JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE BLOGS SMH

  37. Sudija says:

this is the best album of 2010

    wtf u talkin about?

  38. FuckRR says:

you can’t be serious……fuck this site, bunch of bullshit, i’m leaving to HNHH

  39. KILLA QUEENS says:

@FUCK YOU and KID Kalig, whats said about this is that yall didnt get the message from the album. you guys rather listen to the same shyt than recieving knowledge.

I am writing this post from college, yall dumb biggas probably writing that shyt from yall momz basement. grow the fuck up and educate yaself.

  40. Lawl says:

    Preachy slop>>>>Waka Floppa

  41. thehiphopspot says:

im never coming to this website again, the worst part is some people believe these bullshit lists. pathetic.

  42. It's Clear says:

Now I see why that nigga YN doesn’t like Lupe. He represents the future of real hip hop. smh. @YN Sittin in that fuckin interview with your corny ass saying Ross was dope. I hope you get hit by a bus, stick to the side of it like a cartoon when nobody is on it so there won’t be any stops.

  43. mattkoch01 says:

    Hip Hop Blogs Is Dead

How is this the most overated album while Waka Flaka is the most underated album, some serious problems on this joke of a blog

  44. ESCO says:

What a bunch of FUCKING BULLSHIT.

Seriously, this just got me angry.

For a website like this, one of the biggest rap websites in the world to on one day encourage the listening of Waka Flocka (which is fair enough whatever), and then discourage Nas’ album is a fucking disgrace.

Seriously, it’s not even about Waka.

To say that Nas’ album was disappointing is so wrong that it actually tells me you’ve got an agenda, because it’s so FAR from the truth, it’s not even an opinion, it can’t be because it’s so wrong. It’s almost like trying to argue that grass is blue and blood is green, you just know it’s wrong, even if Stephen Hawking argues it. And trust me YN, you’re no Stephen Hawking.

Lost a lot of respect here, trust me. A lot.

  45. Thank Me Hater says:

@mattkoch01 I mentioned earlier that this is bizarro world. You got niggas dissin jeezy and supporting Ross. The world is upside down. How do I get home?!

  46. Haze SHK says:

Wow RR was correct till now, are you fuckers stupid? This is what hip hop was! It stood for pride in where we came from! And ya’ll niggas dont even got deandre way up here? SMFH

  47. Sincere973 says:

I usually don’t agree with Elliot Wilson on most Hip Hop things…but he gets my stamp of approval with this one! Nas next album is going to either catapult him into the future/re-energize his career or unfortunately whether you will admit it or not… his career might be finished! My biggest pet peeve with rappers is not following 2 codes you should never break… #1 If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! #2 Yes you do make music for the fans! Nas broke both those codes after Stillmatic was released! He’s my favorite lyricist hands down, and I believe the best writer of modern time… And he has more talent than most MC’s could ever dream of, including Hov… but he’s been the biggest disappointment of any great MC we have! How many more projects are going to be put out without the production of Premier? Pete Rock? Large Pro?… Say what u want, but these legends bring out the best in Nas! He’s better than 99% of MC’s on a shitty beat, but you get him on the right soundscape, and he’s better than everybody!! How many more albums are going to be soo deep, that it requires you to have your thinking cap on for the entire album? I’m not making fun of him… but I’m being dead serious! Nas kills himself by trying so hard to do things different from everybody else. I don’t want some overly deep album from Nas…I just want him to give me an album with hard beats, and ill rhymes…and just relate to me as a man! He has done it before…but this is an industry of what have you done for me lately! And it’s his time to decide if this is the end of the road for him. Look at Ye & Hov right now… the music they will put will be dope, not immaculate…but the point is… They are active…they are generating interest… Nas has 0 buzz with the exception of his die hard fans…and even his die hard fans are losing interest in his music! That’s not good!

  48. WORD !!! says:

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME YN……!

HOW IN THE FUCK THIS ALBUM WAS A DISAPPOINTING ALBUM….!

I BET RELAPSE WAS THE FUCKING ALBUM OF THE DECADE HUH, YN….?

    GTFOHWTBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
