’10 Best Albums: #1 Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Only in a dream could an album thread surrealism and reality. But that’s what Kanye West did on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Like a modern-day Salvador Dalí, Yeezy’s imagination serves as a palette for lucid production and arrangement. Whimsical charm navigates “Dark Fantasy” while hand claps channel his “Power”. ‘Ye doesn’t mind sharing the wealth on MBDTF though. He invites Rihanna and 10 others to  “All Of The Lights”, lets Jay-Z double dip on “Monster” and “So Appalled”, and masters the “Blame Game” with John Legend. Guess this is the stuff that dreams are made of.

@dashing: how the fuck did this album change the game? I’m a Kanye fan, but it WAS pretty overrated.

but rick ross b4 em.. IS FUCKIN CRAZY
now i wish u guys neva made a list in the 1st place.. u lot prbly loving the number of comments and page views u get…

  23. dashing says:

@sway-z, yeah i originally had b.o.b but in reality, i didn’t really like the b.o.b joint that much. And I could front like i listen to the kweli or the bun b a lot but I don’t. Neither is great. Gave Nicki the spot even though it’s not a great album b/c of the buzz, and the singles. It’ll probably end up being a more influential album than bun or kweli, for better or worse.

  24. illie says:

and YEezys album woulda been more EPIC..if he didnt GIVE AWAY liike 3/4 of the album b4 it hit stores…

  25. CaniBlog? says:

Album of the year definitely between Ye and Drizzy only problem I have with MBDTF is I think its too fuckin short.

  26. mac DIESEL says:

YN CORNBREAD & HIS CROONIES FINALLY GOT SOMETHIN’ RIGHT!!!! CONGRATS ASSHOLES!!!! HA!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  27. sway-z says:

    @ dashing
I feel you, I don’t know how much of a chance you gave to that reflection eternal, but I thought it was dope, the Bun B too, but I can see where you goin wit the buzz and impact, she definitely did that

  28. dashing says:

@ Belize, How did it change the game?

It had no typical radio friendly singles.
It was made to be listened to as a whole, not as a solo album.
    It has a consistent theme.
It was given perfect marks by nearly every respected critic.
It was praised by nearly every respected MC in the game.

When a album achieves a certain level of critical and commercial success, other artists try to replicate. If other rappers try to make MBDTF, good luck. I don’t think they can. But if they try, hip hop will be better for it.

  29. queen b says:

YESS!!! So glad Nicki wasn’t in your Top #10 Was very scared for a moment! 🙂

  30. NihilTimendumEst says:

    Man Really???
Damn Imma Kanye Dickrider Man Been That Way Before The Collage Dropout Days But I Class This As Contempry Pop/RnB Not Hip-Hop Niggas And Bitches..Congrats To The Dude Though But LOST all Faith In RapRadar Ever Since Diddy’s Last Train To Paris Wasn’t The Worst Album This Year..If We Talk Best Hip-Hop My Top 5..
    1/The Roots
    2/Big Boi
    3/GFK
    4/Black Milk
5/Eminem Or B.o.B And i Dont Even Like Em!! He Insulted A Shawty Dropped The N bomb Dude’s A Fool But Recovery Was Dope!!

  31. Nathaniel says:

that “Gorgeous” and “Hell of a Life” are my SHITS.

and those who are familiar with me on RR know “Who Will Survive In America” his a special place in a nigga’s heart, hahaha. Gil Scott Heron… check*

“what does webster say about soul… all i want is a nice home, a wife, and a children (A CHILDREN *classic) and some food to feed them everynight. when it’s all said n done, build a new route to china if they’ll have you! who will survive in america! (rpt… i ain’t typing that out 3 more times lol)

  32. IAMGOAT says:

KANYE IS THE GREATEST IN THE GAME RIGHT NOW!!!

    WATCH THE THRONE BITCHES

    H.A.M

    11.1.11

  33. Belize says:

    @dashing: Reasonable bruh. My bad.

  34. ts5000 says:

the best album of 2010 was bun b’s trill OG
thats why the source gave it 5 mics cause it was dope as hell
kanye’s album was good but i thought it was gonna be better plus most of the tracks leaked long before the album even came out

  35. Belize says:

    @queen b: Yeah it was sadly. -_-

  36. dashing says:

@sway-z, yeah bun and reflection are tight. I personally think Eardum is better than RPM though. Eardrum was severely slept on. The Bun B is tight too. I just think it suffered from too high expectations because of the 5 mic thing, but it’s solid. Nicki’s success is hard to deny though and there are definitely more singles that can blow off that album, even though i don’t personally like them. She made a pop album, and made one successfully…

That’s why the Kanye shit is so ill, cause there aren’t “pop” joints on there. It’s a very no-gimmick, genuine, unorthodox album. It’s like he learned about all the dope shit from 808s and deaded all the weird shit and brought back the hip hop.

  37. Mars says:

Distant Relatives should have been on THIS list

  38. i said YERR says:

kanye fooled u fucks sooo bad haha with his gay ass cover, gay ass movie and gay ass videos lol pple start sayin “oh kanyes a genius” “its great art” and all u dumb fucks believe it … kanyes album so POP n so bad it aint even worth talking about. game changing? lol come on son.

he said NONE of the good friday songs would be on his album = FALSE
so bascially he used that to try out songs and see which 1s every1 likes n then put em on his album.
2 jay features? 9min n 7mins songs come on son U AINT LISTENIN THAT LONG.

Villematic > devil in dress too.

  39. sway-z says:

    @dashing
No doubt, Eardrum is his best album period. Eat to live & New day are my favorite joints from him ever, but I just can’t compare the two like that, Reflection is kind of it’s own thing so looking at it like that, I gotta give it to him.

I think the whole shit about Kanye’s album is the fact that this ADD generation fucked it up. If rappers didn’t have to release a thousand records a month to keep a buzz there would be no problem. I’m 100% sure if nobody heard any of ‘Ye’s album before it dropped, there would be no question on it’s status. Bottomline, he spoiled us and gave it up early, and I thank him for it, because most of that shit out was trash

  40. RAP RADAR? MORE LIKE CRAP RADAR says:

Deserves to be on this list! but still FUCK RAPRADAR.

  41. i said YERR says:

HFM2 Recovery TML TrillOG Darkside MOTM2 IamNotaHuman fridaynightlights champishere3 TINC2 GreenGhost > kanyes album

shit, even styles p’s book INVINCIBLE was better than kanyes album

  42. Mike says:

Nice. This is probably the only album I haven’t listened to fully yet, but I’m gonna go buy it tomorrow. The songs that I did hear like Power, Runaway, Monster and All of the Lights are all amazing. I don’t know why I was so apprehensive to buy it. Kanye put in work forreal.

  43. […] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Elliott Wilson, RapRadarDotCom, 1 Stop Hip Hop and others. 1 Stop Hip Hop said: Rap Radar: ’10 Best Albums #1 Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy http://bit.ly/dJYCKn […]

  44. Bloopers says:

I said YERR is upset guys
    Don’t kill yourself

  45. bigjay2501 says:

    cant hate on this album

  46. dashing says:

@sway-z, yeah, the biggest criticism on the ye album is definitely that we heard so much of it before – in the movie and in the GOOD Friday series. You’re right though. I don’t think there would be any question of it’s status if the first time we heard any of it was the day it came out.

  47. Yo momma says:

No no no kanyes album was NOT HIP HOP. Recovery sounded poppy but was still hip hop. Kanyes album was truly ass

  48. slimshady says:

@ yo momma, YO MOMMAS ASS IS TRULY ASS!!!!! RECOVERY WAS A FUCKING POP RECORD, ONLY THING MISSING ON THAT WAS JUSTIN BEIBER. MBDTF AS HIP HOP OF AN ALBUM YOU CAN FIND

  49. Africa says:

    Kanye gay ass sucks
Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy flop hard

  50. nonfixion says:

    @ sway-z & Em’s stans :

KANYE WEST ALBUM SUCKS ALL ABOU NICKI MINAJ PINK FRIDAY

  52. TEAM WORLD says:

@mac DIESEL Still a freak time for u to go jump off that ROOF MOTHERFUCKER

  53. Donn says:

If u don’t like it, then ur entitled to that, but at the end of the day, the majority of the world speaks loud and clear. A few ppl not liking an album as opposed to millions loving it, yea u do the math
Greatest ALBUM of all time, not just HipHop, ALBUM period

SECOND TO JANELLE MONAE’S ARCHANDROID OF COURSE

  54. sway-z says:

This is Kanye’s LEAST commercial album, what are you niggas talkin about?

Dark Fantasy – Hard, with the RZA shit sprinkled in there
Gorgeous – Hard, with fucking Raekwon dropping jewels, c’mon son!
Power – Hard! This niggas talking about being in a white man’s world and shit, how is that pop?
All of the lights – It might sound a little bright, but listen to what he’s sayin, this is a ghetto ass song
    Monster – Extra Hard
So Appalled – Damn near harder than Monster
Devil in a New Dress – Straight hip hop soul
Runaway – A song about douchebags? This is pop to ya’ll?
Hell of a life – A song about fucking porn bitches. Real pop ain’t?
Blame Game – Deep shit for anybody who ever talked to a bitch, which I question wit some of ya’ll…
Lost in the World – Crazy ass drums, dope lyrics, what the fuck is ya’ll smoking?

Where’s the pop shit? Where’s the blatant radio reach? Nah, his shit is pop because it’s ‘popular’ nigga, that’s it, ain’t no attempts on here to get on radio at all. His shit is on radio because it’s dope. Matter fact, I hear Monster on the radio more than any of these other songs, and that’s probably the hardest shit on the whole cd. Just because it’s Kanye and that nigga wears blazers showing off his taco meat, don’t let that cloud your thoughts. Be for real

  55. sway-z says:

    @nonfixion
Nigga what u talking bout? I just wrote damn near an essay on why this album is the hottest of the yr

  56. Kanye outdid himself with that one. Beat selection is FLAWLESS. His engineer did a good ass job too.

  57. Catcher freeman says:

haters kill urselves. this was a masterpiece!

  58. jaybee32 says:

    what a fucking joke.

  59. Catcher freeman says:

almost forgot. i hope watch the throne is this hot or greater

  60. PrincePolo says:

kanye made a really good album . but one accurate decision ain’t covering all the shit you did all these past days . and putted on teflon don higher than recovery . man fuck you . rapradar supports fake artists . fuck you fuck you fuck you . rapradar = GFPFFA = GIVING FREE PROMOTIONS FOR FAKE ARTISTS . PoopRadar . fuck yall .

  61. YOUAJOKE says:

CANT AGREE MORE I SAID YERRR… KANYE IS A TALENTED DUDE BUT HE AINT THE SAME RAPPER THAT WAS MAKING SOLID ALBUMS, HES TURNED INTO AN EMOTIONAL BITCH… THE NIGGA IS USING BEATS YOU’D HEAR IN THE BACKGROUND OF THE X FILES

  62. nonfixion says:

    @ sway-z:
YES I KNOW BUT IF YOU THINK RELAPSE > RECOVERY
WOULD YOU THINK RELAPSE > MY BEAUTIFUL DARK FANTASY ?

  63. slimshady says:

@ sway-z YOU FORGOT…. THE DRUMS ON ALL OF THE LIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCKIN RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!

  64. Skeezymak says:

This album is overrated as fuck, only about 4 tracks have replay value. Recovery > This.

  65. sway-z says:

    @ nonfixion
Nah I wouldn’t. It’s all about expectations on a lot of this shit, which some niggas ain’t understanding. Relapse had way more anticipation behind it because it was years since his last joint, and when it came out, people was TOO critical of it. On the same hand, when Recovery dropped, the same amount of pressure wasn’t there, plus it was the only album he ever did this way, reaching out to these kind of producers and collabos wit the same type of pop acts he used to clown on. To me, Relapse has some of his best lyrical work ever, but Kanye’s shit is a whole different type of approach to hiphop albums as a whole. For me personally, I know I’ll be playing MBDTF & Relapse way more 10 years from now than I will Recovery

    @slimshady

You damn right, them elephant jawns, you can feel that down the street lol

  66. slimshady says:

    cosign @ sway-z.
RELAPSE HAD REPLAY VALUE, RECOVERY HAD NONE WHATSOEVER. IRONICALLY, THE ONLY GOOD SONG ON RECOVERY WAS “SO BAD”!!!!!!!, A DR. DRE BEAT.

HE SHOULD STICK TO THE SCRIPT AND DO WHAT HE DOES BEST… SLAY DRE BEATS, NOT SINGING ABOUT SHIT LIKE “WARM FUZZY FEELING” (LOVE THE WAY YOU LIE). THE FUCK IS THAT.

  67. LO says:

AND CAN NIGGAS PLEASE STOP SAYIN VILLEMATIC WAS BETTER THAN DEVIL IN A NEW DRESS….. A FREESTYLE IS NOT COMPARABLE TO THE GENUIS OF THAT RECORD!!

    TELL ‘EM LO SAID IT

  68. PrincePolo says:

almost famous is the best song on recovery .

  69. smokeyou says:

I agree with the choice of #1 but ‘Modern day Dali’ is kind of pushing it too far. lol.

  70. nonfixion says:

    @ sway-z:

Okay cool, i think recovery is trash especially the song with lil wayne, but i didnt’ listen relapse too
i don’t support this guy and his team.

maybe i’m wrong but i think kanye takes more risks than em on this joint,
i don’t talk about the taylor accident but kanye try out new ideas at each albums

  71. sway-z says:

    @nonfixion

That’s my point, when people say it’s a “pop” album, they just saying that because of who it is. There’s nothing pop about it, half the songs on there is damn near 5 minutes long, a thousand guests, crazy subject matter, he wasn’t reaching at all. Like I said, they play fucking Monster of all songs on the radio stations around here, so niggas can miss me with that pop talk, Recovery is WAAAAAY more pop.

By the way, give that Relapse a try, as long as you don’t take his subject matter serious and just listen to the execution, it’s lyrically really dope. That’s Eminem though, you either fuck with him or you don’t, really ain’t no middle ground lol

  72. K-Lam says:

So I’m guessing the only reason this album got #1 is for its production……?

  73. TJ says:

in no particular order my list is

    vampire weekend
    freeway / jake one
    big boi
    kanye west
    sleigh bells
    the roots
    nottz
    black milk
    eminem
    nas / damien marley

  74. White_rappers311 says:

Kanye west hasn’t rapped good since his sophomore album and this is no exception
He’s a racist ignorant prick and not cause the Taylor swift thing I don’t care about that but any guy who makes his name a key part of the beat in a song is way too into himself and kanye sucks
    Kan-ye Kan-ye what a piece of shit

  75. AJFNGJJ says:

I have a question. Did y’all make fucked up lists for more comments? I mean I can agree with this choice ’cause you guys’ some mainstreamed out, tasteless mother fuckers, but for the most part was it for comments? But anyways fuck all y’all. 2DopeBoyz.com’s list >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Your guys’ list

  76. John says:

    Fuck yesssssssssss !

Number 1 on every fucking list let’s goo

We onto Watch The Throne now baby !! 😉

    You haters stay behind !

  77. Dj shyne tyme says:

Am i crazy for thinking this album is overated?? College Dropout is my favorite cd of all time..Late Registration and Graduation were incredible to me..808s obviously sucked…but for some reason I can not say that MBDTF is any better than his first three albums..does anyone else feel this way???

  78. D. L. says:

    KANYE JOINT WAS ON POINT.

  79. BBoggz says:

    great album, but not #1.

    these list means nothing.
how does someone sell six million albums and not have the album of the year.

  80. Drucifer says:

Since i only listened to 4 albums last year this is my list

10- LLoyd banks Hunger for more ( really disappointed me, i was rooting hard for the kid )

3- Drake Thank me Later ( like he said thank him later, this shit was so ahead ppl will get it later )

2- Rick Ross Teflon Don ( Clap for him, i fucks with Ross but not even in my wildest dream i never thought he could come with with an album like this, that shit was a masterpiece and i’m not using it loosely)

1- Kanye west MBDTF ( Standing ovation that’s all i’m gonna say about that )

  81. BBoggz says:

    @B.dot
I would like to nominate YN for the you played yourself section.
Take down kayne and put him in.
Your lists werent bad but his were awful. does he even listen to hip hop?

  82. ChriZ says:

    college dropout>late registration>MBDTF
lets be honest, this album wasnt very lyrical at all. get back to the old kanye
    villematic>devi in a new dress

  83. okdoagg says:

Well, one #1 I can agree to..but Teflon “Officer Ricky” Don over Sir Lucious Left Foot? HAAAAA

    Hiphop journalism is dead lol

  84. slimshady says:

NO DJ SHYNE, YOUR THE ONLY IDIOT WHO FEELS THIS SWAY. COLLEGE DROPOUT WAS HIS WEAKEST EFFORT, LYRICALLY AND SONICALLY THIS WAS BY FAR HIS BEST WORK.

  85. HOOD says:

album was dope but dude leaked his whole shit out before it was even released, better off changing up some new tracks instead but i guess that’s history

  86. i said YERR says:

you a gay fish blooper n just like ur name … kanyes album was a blooper. go around in ur car n bump blame game lol see the looks u get from ur boys haha only my bitch listens to the 2nd half of that kanye cd HA!

  87. Sc_R says:

@Belize @dashing.. don’t forget this nigga made a 30 minute movie/commercial as promo for this album and shutdown MTV.. I don’t think it was as much “art” as “listen to these songs”.. cause I’ll never watch it again unless I wanna see Selita.. thats some Michael Jackson change the game type shit.. and EVERYBODY tried to bite the GOOD Friday font for they singles too. Ye is just in another world with this shit. period.

  88. dashing says:

@Sc_R, word. That was real big for hip hop.

    (100th comment)

  89. Ac@pella! says:

    🙂 Agreed.

  90. DJ PuraVida says:

I say take rick ross off the whole thing and put kanye at #2 and Recovery at #1 cause em did it without any cameos and raw talent. No publicity stunt like the whole taylor swift thing on vmas.

  91. a2z says:

I said YERR is like the dude on Chappelle’s Show…. “I smoke rocks nigga!!!”

  92. kanyeasshole says:

the best album of the year should go to taylor swift

  93. your pusha says:

im i the only one in the world who hasnt listened to this album? i just cant be bothered! ill give a try and let you know, ive been stuck on teflon don all year round and i just cant move on, and then ashes to ashes came out and thats me for now, at the moment i just want hot beats and big talk i cant get into that sensitive rap but i will give it a try coz hip hop im down with it since the 80s

  94. steger95 says:

i only like 3 or 4 songs of this one i dont know whats so good at this i hope the “watch the Thone” album will be better and my number one is thank me later

  95. @DJ Shyne Time says:

Na Im the same way; this one really didnt click with me for some reason. He really didnt spit hard on this one at all.

And before some stan starts quoting me some lyrics- Im not saying he didnt have any good lines. My real problem is I get annoyed listening to him fuck up what were otherwise decent verses by focusing on the most ignorant garbage in the entire song for a hook-type deal. He did it on Dark Fantasy with that “seance” crap, he did it on the breakdown in Power (Colin Powers?), All of the Lights just illustrates how Kanye sees the ghetto in the exact same way rich white people do (first verse = domestic abuse, second verse = child support), Monster…. yea I just cant sit through a Nicki Minaj verse, Runaway was just awful and WAY too long, and Lost in the World was an out-and-out pop record. BUT, after all that, this is still clearly the hip hop album of the year.

    College Dropout = Late Registration = Graduation > MBDTF > 808s

  96. t-bag says:

Recovery’ is 2010’s best-selling album … fuck the rest

  97. jonny bizness says:

I like that Yn showed some balls putting recovery at number 3.His partner is em’s manager that would have been easy to put it at num 2 TD was a great record and deserved it’s place minus that trey and puffy disaster he had the summer hood wise while Em had the pop charts on lock.I ain’t never heard a Em song off recovery in a ‘hip hop club ‘ and i ain’t never heard it knock at the traffic lights when a black guy has been behind the wheel not that it’s a colour thing cos without white people buying our records we would be near extinct i jus feel that White people who hate rap would buy Em that’s why the sales are phenomenal but that doesn’t equate to the best album of the yr.As for kanye my take is that it is the best album since the blueprint and the people who didn’t get it will look back in 10 years time as a landmark moment in hiphop I did it when i didn’t get the Chronic when i first heard it

  98. SwallowMyNutz! says:

The#1 most overated album of the year!!!!You cats on this site EAT DICK!!!!

  99. lol says:

this is hillarious elliot u kike t.is album ems album banks album all better then this shit ur a dumb fuk dont know bout rap go listen to syllables by eminem bruh “its about a hot beat and a catchy hook dont matter bout lyrics ne more” nigga aint shit shit in his rhymes nothing all about bullshit.

  100. #anybody? says:

Im just curious, why is mainstream or “pop” appeal a bad thing when Eminem does it, but according to everybody on here, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’s strongest point was its mainstream appeal?

    Keep it consistent.

  101. lol says:

DAM IM GLAD SYLLABLES CAME OUT SO PRODUCERS LIKE KANYE STOP RAPPIN SKATEBOARDN WANNA B ROCKSTARS LIKE WAYNE STOPS RAPPIN R&B SINGERS LIKE DRAKE STOP RAPPIN WANNA B LIL KIMS LIKE NIKKI STOP RAPPN HIGHSCHOOL WEED SMOKERS LIKE KAHLIFA STOP RAPPIN AND OFFICERS COPS MAKE NO SENSE SHIT CALL ME SCARFACE CALL ME PAPI CHULO CALL ME MC HAMMER CALL ME CHILLY CHEEL WHITE LIKE MADONNA I CALL IT RIHANNA FAT FUKS LIKE ROSSGAY STOP FUCKIN RAPPPIN THIS IS HIP HOP NOT CAT IN THE HAT BOOKS

  103. Sage says:

I don’t see how The Roots are under Drake, Rick Ross, Kanye….that shit was the best album I’ve heard in a FEW years. I fuck with Kanye’s shit to the max but c’mon.

  104. Bryce Ayyy says:

    @DJ Shine Time

I’d have to disagree with somethings.

One point I definitely agree on, lyrically this Kanye was pretty ass aside from “Gorgeous” and “So Appalled”. Other than that, he was either outshined by featured artists or it was just stuff you listen to like “…mm..ok, cool.”

Now production value as well as substance and songs as a whole, I’d definitely give an A.

Production all had a very vintage/soulful/unique feel to them i.e “Dark Fantasy”, “So Appalled”, “Power”, “Blame Game”

Power, All of the Lights was incredible production wise and song as a whole, the drops, the additional vocals that Kanye is notorious for. His direction with the “AOTL” verses was retarded to me but whatever.

Monster, Bon Iver and Ross set the tone, it’s like jumping inside of a “house of horrors” type film. Ye’s verse..had no relation to the topic of “Monster”. Jay-Z stood the fuck out on that, best verse. Nicki… I agree, I can’t sit through her verse either, it’s pretty painful. People just like it because she’s aiming at Lil’ Kim and responding to haters directly accompanied with her EVER CHANGING delivery.

So Appalled, that shit was dope, rhymes, production, everything. Devil in a New Dress, I honestly skip it because it does nothing for me. “Runaway”, had to grow on me…HARD(pause). I wasn’t feeling that shit one bit but it grew on me. I can’t even say anything in it’s defense because it just grew on me…not anything specifically I can vouch for.

Hell of a Life, that shit was clean as fuck, rockish vibe embodying lust and the fast lane. Blame Game was great, back on that soulful shit with a lot of substance. Lost in the World wasn’t pop that was more Soul with a mixture of a “Jumanji/Lion King” African-esqe.

The album can be listened to as whole, not just selectively jumping around to 2-3 songs then being like the rest of the songs are wack. The dude actually used actual orchestration which is honestly what we need more of, not just metronome and these replicated beats that we hear all the time.

p.s….fucking up decent verses with ignorant garbage…I agree.hahah

I’m a big Kanye West fan but this is not his best work. I personally think Late Registration was his best work to date. My belief is Kanye is so progressive that people jump on his bandwagon cuz they don’t wanna be the 1 to say they don’t like it if it goes platinum & beyond. Twitter: 1HipHopOG
