Hate her or love her, Ms. Minaj is on top. And no album has divided the hip-hop nation as much as her debut. I for one have grown to appreciate it. Although it falls short of the hype built from her scene-stealing cameos (“Monster” made me a believer), it’s an awkwardly sequenced but clever collection that combines moments of greasy street talk (the brutal “Roman’s Revenge” and the dastardly callous “I Did It On Em”) with an unabashed aim at the pop audience (the ear-irritating “Right Thru Me” and the cheesy collabo with Will.I.Am “Check It Out”). It’s an issue she tackles head on on the terrific “Dear Old Nicki”. She puts her lifetime in between the paper’s lines and for that, songs like “Save Me” need to be appreciated. Even the biggest detractor must admit, she’s still a master collaborator as evidenced by her work with Drake (“Moment 4 Life”) and Kanye (“Blazin”). Ole girl doesn’t just have a nice thing behind her, she’s got a bright future ahead of her. She deserves to be taken serious. Sleep at your own peril.
