Big Pun Family Push For Street Rename

For the second time, fans of Big Pun are petitioning for the renaming of a Bronx street in his honor. This time, his sister Nicole Rodriguez wants to rename 163rd St and Rogers Place: “Big Pun Place”.

“I feel I owe this to my brother. He was not only my brother, he was a father figure. He stepped in when my parents couldn’t. So I want to push for this. He deserves it. It would become a visual cemetery for everyone. My brother was cremated, so there’s nowhere to visit him. This way, his legacy will live on close to home.”

This Saturday there will be a rally at the mark and so far 1,200 signatures have been collected. Supporters can sign here. 11 years ago, two BX fifth graders tried to get the intersection named Big Pun Ave. Yeeeah baby.

  12. HarlemPrince1982 says:

Rest in peace to the man, but he is overrated as a rapper. Notorious BIG greatest of ALL TIME. Enough Said.

  13. Bronx, NY says:

PUN was a dope lyricist. R.I.P. His contribution to hip hop, though short lived was powerful. Now…That being said. Really???? What has that man done for the greater good? He made 2 great albums. There has been lots of great musicians. Has he helped the poor? Has he cured a deadly disease? Did he do anything that was beneficial to mankind in general?

I reallize that it’s only a street in the hood named after him but why is he worthy of it? From what i understand, he was an abusive father and husband. He was abusive to himself because no one gets that large without abusing your health. In my opinion, he is No role model for kids.

This is why us minorities who try to live like decent, hardworking, contributing members of society get a bad rap. Because of those in our communities with a low life hood mentallity.

Why not petition your local assembly man to fight landlords who charge an arm and leg for rent and don’t give heat or fix. Or, rally each other to get out the vote when the “TEA PARTY” was gunning for the house? Or pressure your local police precents/commissioner/mayors office to insure strict regulations regarding law enforcement in our communities?

No you ghetto asses wanna fight to have a street named after someone who though was talented, contributed Nothing to benefit our communities lives….smh

  14. OHREALLY says:

ALTHOUGH HE MAY HAVE HAD HIS FAULTS -WHETHER HIS WEIGHT GAIN OR THE DOMESTIC ABUSE, HE DID TRY TO CHANGE HIS COMMUNITY. HE HAD A REC CENTER FOR THE KIDS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND WAS ALSO NOMINATED FOR A NAACP AWARD FOR PROMOTING EDUCATION. HE INSPIRED A GENERATION OF LATIN ARTISTS-WHILE LIVING IN THE VERY SAME NEIGHBORHOOD HE CAME FROM WHEN HE WENT PLATINUM. HE WAS ALWAYS ABOUT COMMUNITY WHICH MORE THAN I CAN SAY FOR ALOT OF ARTISTS THESE DAYS. CHRIS BROWN GETS A PASS FOR BEATING HIS CHIC AND HAS ONLY CONTRIBUTED TO HIS COMMUNITY BY WAYS OF COURT PROBATION. . BIGGIE BEAT THE SNOT OUTTA KIM-YET HES THE GREATEST AND THAT GETS OVERLOOKED. THE LIST IS LONG. AT LEAST HE CAN BE USED AS AN EXAMPLE OF THE CONSEQUENCES IN POOR DECISIONB MAKING BOTH IN DOMESTIC VILNCE AND IN OBSEITY. AND BX NY—-THOSE HARD WORKING PEOPLE YOU TALK ABOUT HAVE THER SAME SKELETONS IN THEIR CLOSETS-THEY JUST ARE NOT IN THE PUBLIC’S EYE.

  16. Majest says:

Bronx ny..thats some real talk…but always assume theres another perspective.the way i see it,like she said this could be a place for people to honor pun..where they would probably set up shop and sell merchandise to cash on the legacy.hey why not

  17. veesky says:

At Mr. Brooks, that’s what I’m sayin’. I think Big Pun makes it sound like a novelty or some sort of gag, Christopher Rios would be more fitting

IF somebody beat the dog shit out of your Mother, Sister, or Daughter would you give a shit how much he did for the community? I man seriously, if he wasn’t famous then nobody would give a damn, I mean this is the sad crap that I hate to see being said. He is on tape beating his wife, how about instead of worrying a street name they raise some money for his battered wife and two kids that had to live in a shelter? Fat joe even said it himself, we tried to give her the money, but she can’t live off us, she should have taken care of that, but yet he can scream big puns name every minute he gets for popularity. I don’t get people here in America, so backwards its a shame.

  21. ChellBellz says:

Bronx, NY << totally agree, adults don't realize that we need to protect our young, this man wasn't a role model. people are still giving grown men who beat women hard times, him being dead doesn't make him a martyr or anything, if you want to support him by a freaking old ass album, or something. Don't go trying to name a street after him that nobody will care about down the line. I still think he is a coward for being his wife like that. Grown men do Grown men things, and to me he was just a immature ass dude.

  22. ChellBellz says:

jlp < I'm sure this is how President Bush wishes everybody thought that way of him too.

  23. Bronx, NY says:

@Majest, on that street they already set up shop and sell all kinds of things. We don’t need to rename the street to to that. Again, we should honor those worthy…… Just my opinnion…

@OHREALLY, Chris Brown did not get a pass. Infact, thats why his career in in the toilet. As for BIG, I don’t know his story. We are discussing “Christopher Rios” AKA BIG PUN. My point is that he is not someone we should be celebrating in this fashion. You like his music? fine buy his two albums, but name a street after him, really? Since you want to name names….

There is martin Luther King BLVD, Fredderick Douglas, JFK, etc. These are people who sacrificed for the greater good of society. I don’t mean to get deep on anyone but, i feel this sends the wrong message to our youth. He was not a great man in the sense of those ive named who certainly were worthy of this kind of reckognition.. Yes he inspired lationos with pride but honestly, being latino myself, we are people full of pride regardless so that really means nothing. we all have flaws and skeletons however, it doesn’t make it ok. We should not say oh well so he beat the shit out his wife with a pistol, we all have skeletons, lets name a street after him… Thats insane.

Again, I opologise for the long post but i love a debate; and @OHREALLY I respect your position on this issue. Its nice to see that we can have this dialogue without immature ignorance…
