Lupe Fiasco Praises Lil B

Last night, Lil B dropped his new project, I’m Gay and today Lupe took to his website to give him his props. Below is an excerpt.

So Lil B is from The Bay and he’s a youth hahaha we can stop right here! He already good in my book. But what gets Lil B admission into my coveted genre of “Liberation Rock” is his absolute lack of fear when it comes to challenging the status quo. Whether it be in hip-hop, which is very elitist and caste and class oriented, or just society in general, which is very elitist and class centric.

His albeit “rocky” road musically has been honestly at times unbearable to walk on. Some of Lil B’s past works have been underwhelming to say the least and at moments I would seriously consider heading out for smoother pavement. But every now and again an absolute jewel would come to the surface and I’d find myself unable to fathom leaving this kids side for any reason. The vulgar lyrics, happy go lucky cooking dances and sometimes pointless stream of conscious style rambling started to give way to hints of a deadly serious revolutionary mentality lurking underneath.

Now I’m not talking Dead Prez or Immortal Technique level stuff here but something just as powerful and meaningful. What I was witnessing was a man in the process of profound self-realization and self-awareness. And seeing that this road has led to the promised land in the form of “I’m Gay (I’m Happy)” has been for me just as fulfilling as the new understandings that I’m sure Lil Bars has come upon if the content of his new album is anything to go by.

  19. Nathaniel says:

i read the full thing on his lupe’s website. gotta respect it… most important thing he said was:

” Second, my faith is in the youth. So I find myself constantly observing and trying to empower and support the youth in any way that I can. No matter what they create. Through the youth expressing themselves you have a golden opportunity to communicate and gain a new perspective on the ever changing world around us. It’s a beautiful thing. ”

^my niggas, if you don’t think about anything else. always consider a thing like this. THIS is most important.

respect to Lu and the youth.

  20. Nathaniel says:

i think i’ll cop that shit just to listen to what the Bay Area youth are living and thinking like. s’all education at the end of the day.

  21. James says:

    @Nathaniel

what kind of pseudo-conscious BS is that? Lil B is an attention whore, nothing more, nothing less. Whatever it takes, people need to have him on their minds…..and lupe……dont even get me started on that industry clown. Such a puppet.

  22. He doin all dis shit to get some attention, dropin an album witout wanting attention is Kanye and Jay-z droppin watch the throne. da tracklist nd release date had to get leaked for us to know anything bout da album(exept for h.a.m). Plus the tittle is “watch the throne” not “im a fuckin faggot, im happy”

  23. Nathaniel says:

    @James

lupe being about 30, lil b 20, he’d look like a real clown if he couldn’t address the music of a youth from the bay like that. all rappers, entertainers, etc are attention whores. they put out music… either negative or positive… for… well attention. and they market it in such a way to get it the absolute most… attention. what are you saying?

if i listen to lupe’s entire catalog, puppet doesn’t come to mind. too socio-political, too much time trying to promote self-thinking and awareness. whether i agree with every move he makes isn’t an issue. i don’t agree with every move any man makes. but your take on it is your take on it. i ain’t mad atchu

  24. Jonathan says:

whats wrong with Lupe giving Lil B his props? sure the Based God may not be good lyrically (in fact Lupe even said so months ago if asked if he ever wanted to collaborate with him), but he is sort of right, and besides he’s entilted to his own opinion

  25. YALLCORNY says:

THIS IS THE EXACT REASON LIL B DROPPED THIS ALBUM..CUZ OF NIGGAS LIKE YA..I BET HALF OF YA AINT EVEN HEARD THE ALBUM..AND ALREADY CALLIN IT TRASH..MOST OF YA NIGGAS LIKE 35 PLUS GET A LIFE HATE ON A NIGGA GRIND..DIS NIGGA DOIN HIS THIS HE’S SAYIN ITS 2 B YA SELF..SMH YA NIGGAS IGNORANT SON…AND I GUARANTEE THAT MOST OF YA NIGGAS WAS LUPE FANS BUT NOW HE SAID LIL B WAS COOL YA WANNA JUMP OFF HIS DICK SMH..YA NIGGAS CORNY HIP HOP AINT DEAD ITS JUS THE CORNY OL HEAD MUHFUCKAZ FUCKIN IT UP & THE FOLLOWERS KEEP DOIN YA THING LIL B… PS NO IM NOT GAY..I JUS FEEL EVERYONE SHUD JUSS BE THEMSELVES N NOT B FOLLOWERS OR TRY 2 B SOMETHIN THEY NOT..I RESPECT LIL B 4 THE SHIT

  26. Nathaniel says:

    and as for pseudo-conscious BS…

all i think he was saying is that it’s wise to embrace, and try to understand the youth… support and love them, as opposed to downgrading, “shitting on them”, etc. that’s a unwise move older generations have always made. especially we black folks. it just perpetuates an ever-widening generation gap. you let them know you’re riding with them, they’ll open up to you… respect and trust you, and THEN the atmosphere is created where you can teach/reach them. i go for that… and from experience, it works like a charm.

  27. James says:

    @Nathaniel

There is a massive difference between gaining attention for the promotion of music and flat out trolling for attention. If Jay-z titled his next album “Booty Pumper” and came up with a “Deep” reason for it people would look at him crazy.

Lupe Fiasco dropped 2 of the most important albums in hip hop. His last album was a coaster at best. That mainstream auto tuned, trey songz featured album was terrible. “Words I Never Said” was a lame attempt to sound intelligent and controversial, anyone with half a brain could see that. And his laundry list of hippocracy is shameful at this point. Now he’s supporting a silly brain dead drug addict with a speech impediment.

  31. Tucq says:

I only listened 2 the preview tracks on Itunes so far……. and it didn’t sound half bad.
Its lyrically dense material, sorta like east coast rap.

The whole “I’m Gay” thing turned me off at first, but fuck all that. I’m a grown ass man, straight as a muthafucka, and I’ll give him a chance.

If a dude can rap, he can rap… or he can’t. That’s all that matters.

  32. Lockness says:

  36. Tony says:

The sad thing is, nobody even noticed how bad a writer Lupe is. That was the worst written statement I’ve ever read. Lupe needs to go back to high school.

  37. GHostwriter says:

i was an engineer in the studio and i can say jay electronica ghostwrote his whole album! Lupe u a dumb follower not a leader! U should.ve called jay yamukka n checked your facts on booty mouth boy!

  38. Sam I Am says:

Ahhhhhh well I just went through the process of hearing the whole thing so I can give an informed review and opinion:

“I’m Gay (I’m Happy)” is as strange as Lil B and that is in the sense that everytime he acts a certain way for so long and you have him figured out, he’ll switch up on you. In some cases, that can be a great thing, but in Brandon McCartney’s case, it can be his weakness. I’m Gay starts (and ends) with Lil B giving his best “All Eyez on Me” impersonation. He continues to state during most of the album that people shouldn’t hate on him and that he’s going to make it and “Fuck you if you think otherwise”. Persecution or not, a lot of people want to hear his debut project so they can once and for all if B can bring the heat. If you’ve heard the Lil B/Tony Yayo track “Based”, then that’s how the album plays out. McCartney pretty much thinks of whatever social issue is prevalent and attempts to rap about it.

Enter the pitfalls of the album. The project feels very rushed often and you can even hear it in B’s “flow” if you want to call it that. A lot of times he stumbles on what he’s trying to say and sometimes its even inaudible. A person that was pretty much the media and blog owner darling for months would have at least taken the time to edit the rough spots and master the project properly, but maybe this is that “raw” that his based fans wanted. Another fault with the album is that whenever Lil B starts to actually rhyme properly and maintain the flow, he stops himself and starts rambling. Its like the uncle at the birthday party who tells you congrats and he’s so proud but then starts telling you about the Summer of 76. There are times when he even negates what he just said previously. On one track he says he doesnt believe in God, but then one or two tracks later, he says “you pray to God, Im just bringing him closer”. These things are most of the time looked over, but when the artist themselves beg you to analyze their works, you have to point out the flaws. The beats are rough, but still have a soulfulness to a lot of them. I would say that the beats definitely help the listener to get through the tracks, but only so much.

All in all, if you are a Based fan, you’ll probably love this, regardless of what anyone else says. However if you are listening without any bias, you will hear that Lil B can sometimes have flashes of brilliance. Then again, when you hear so many subpar or awful songs (close to 700 as he claims), almost any flash of something reasonable will sound good compared to the rest. When Lil B goes to create his next album, it would be strongly advised to take his time with it and not rush or overhype the project as there is nothing in the project more revolutionary than a lot of Soundclick rappers out there.

    I’m Gay (I’m Happy) = 2.5 out of 5

Side note: Lupe. You need a new publicist. This isn’t working for you.

  39. YOUAJOKE says:

LUPE JUST PLEASE SHUT THE FUCK UP NIGGA… YOU WENT FROM CALLING OBAMA A TERROIST TO SAYING LIL B IS DOPE… ED LOVER NEEDS TO SPAZ OUT ON YOUR CRAZY ASS

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF LUPE TAKING DRUGS? LIKE SERIOUSLY WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THIS DUDE

  40. YOU.A.JOKE says:

LUPE AND LIL B SHOULD MAKE AN ALBUM TOGETHER AND NAME IT…. IM GAY THE SEQUEL – WE BOTH GAY

  41. Mz.Scott says:

  44. Drock says:

FUCK! YA”LL NIGGAS STILL MENTAL SLAVES. LIL B IS HERE TO FREE YOU AND YOU CALL HIM A FAG, DO U WANT ME TO SAY HOW THATS SO TYPICAL OF NIGGAS? YOU ARE THE STEREO-TYPE.

    THE HOOD IS A LIE.

  45. biggiesmalls says:

Im gay means his happy not that his homo. Niggas were too stupid to get it so he added Im Happy to the ttitle – and you still dont get it.

  46. Mario says:

    SHUT THE FUCK UP! LUPE

  47. lol says:

lol can’t believe the ignorance in the comments. so this is the mentality of a good chunk of hip-hop heads these days huh? just gay jokes, discriminatory and self conscious machismo and not a lick of real thought or debate. must suck for y’all…

  48. Di@z says:

I’m gay (happy) for new hip hop acts on the rise like myself but this is nothing but a gimmick. You won’t hear him rappin about gay rights or revolutions, this is just a publicity stunt and everyone is eating it up and coming back for seconds. Why I don’t know just shows how easily fans can be swayed. When it comes to gay dudes I say fuck it, its there lives let them live it how they want to. There not trying to get married with us let them be happy and stay in their own lane. Peace and Luv to every individual on this planet were all humans at the end of the day; whether we give it or take it. *turn my bomb off* lol

i can’t believe that i’m saying this, but Lil B’s album “I’m Gay” is pretty dope my nig. can’t really say much for his based freestyles on the album but the production is off the charts. i can almost listen to the whole album without skipping. i know yall may have heard this alot from your parents and teachers, but this album is a good example of why you shouldn’t judge a book buy it’s cover. i’m starting to like this whole BASED WORLD movement that’s catching on in Cali. not giving a -uck and doing you is what alotta niggas struggle with. be yaself.

  54. This NIgga Loopy Is Nutso says:

Lil Bs music is trash. He’s not a good rapper. All these artists out here trying to cosign him and very blatantly trying to tap into his wierdo fan base. The funny thing is 90% of his fans are like the people who would be fans of 50 Tyson, all for the wrong reasons.

Anybody who is a fan of Lil B is a Lil Bitch and you’re not insulted when I say that. When young wierdos like Lil B lack male figure in their life, and hip hop lacks the self quality control it once had you have bullshit like Lil B.

Then you have attention whore’s with hack opinions like Lupe who say things like Barack Obama is a terrorist when he’s been putting music out before his administration trying to get on the Lil Bitch wave.

Sorry Loopy… no dice nigga. Get a fucking hair cut and get back in the studio & STFU if a beat isn’t on.

  55. FuckYall says:

Listen to the fucking album 1st and then you’ll know what Lupe is talking about faggots. haters SMH
