  9. Sam I Am says:

there’s nothing against writing a book. if they can write an entertaining one, go for it. however, ill ask you this: what is your measure of success?

True talk. for all of the publicity and coverage they got, the album’s they released tanked horribly. the only one close to a reasonable success would be Frank Ocean as he was featured on prominent (as well as critically acclaimed ) projects, most recently on Watch the Throne on mulitple tracks. Id call him the success, but not the entire OF collective.

  23. Meg says:

Hey Sam I Am.. you are obviously old as fuck and still define success by soundscan only so let me clue to in to the evolution of the record business and why OF is successful.. Tylers independent release has sold over 100k copies which is alot more than most rappers on this site without a single or major label machine behind it.. Odd Future has toured the world and has yet to play a show that in not sold out. They own their own merch which pretty much sells out at every stop. They have a TV show on Adult Swim that starts later this year. Today they announced their photo book deal which will street in November. They also got a big check to retain their own publishing.. oh yeah they have a record label that they signed themselves to and have full creative and business control of… All of this has happened in the last 9 months.. their average age is 19.
so how to YOU define sucess

  24. Meg says:

Hey Sam I Am… forgot about the VMA nods for Video of the Year and Best New Artist for a video written, directed by Tyler…

  25. Sam I Am says:

    @Meg

im flattered that you think im “old as fuck” but turning 25 this Fall isnt as old as you may think it is, but i digress. Anyways to answer your statement:
–When you receive as much promo as Odd Future did and you just now get to 100,000 ( they were 97,000 a week and a half ago, so they’re probably JUST NOW at 100,000), I wouldnt call that a “resounding success”. I may been harsh when i said “Tanked horribly” earlier, but that still isnt a success to me. Sounds very average, and you say thats a lot more than people on major labels. It’s not. Not at all.
–Unless you were traveling the world with them (or really Tyler in disguise), you wouldn’t know what shows or merch sold out at all, so dont believe thats told to you.
–Toured the world? That’s nice, but a lot of other do that as well. Maino’s toured the world. Is he a success? Small, but not grandiose at all. Same with J.Holiday, Meek Mill, Wale. Hell, even Lil B has toured the world. Are they big successes? No.
–TV Show on Adult Swim. I can give them props if it was of a quality level of some Afro Samurai or Aqua Teen Hunger Force type material, but if (and I say IF because we haven’t seen the show yet) it turns out like some Tim and Eric Awesome Job or Saul of the Mole Men, I will extend my facepalm sentiment to you and be on my way.
–I didnt understand what you wrote in terms of the book deal. elaborate please. “street in November” ill assume you mean start, but “They also got a big check to retain their own publishing” Doesnt make sense. Why would you pay someone to keep their publishing? You’re saying “make your money with no royalties from us and we’ll still pay you on top of that” I dont think thats what you meant to type.
–Lastly, I dont give a fuck..(yo run that back) I dont give a fuck….(let me remix that shit for you) I dont give a flying rat’s ass, vagina, and/or penis about what MTV says. These are the same cats that came out of nowhere and said Kreayshawn is nominated for Best new Artist and Video of the Year as well ( you can correct me on the Video part if im wrong). MTV has no credibility on music. Payola reigns supreme in this world.

SIde note: There’s an external party involved with Odd Future. If you really think they just did all this shit on their own, you’re pretty gullible.

  33. Meg says:

@ I Am Sam– heres some answers.. remember ignorance isnt a substitute for knowledge

    1. Album sales: Well your obviously a bit out of the loop on the inner workings but technically what has shipped is what has sold.. That said Tyler and Odd Future have a younger demographic that have grown up on the internet. Most of them havent bought an album in their lifetime. Soundscan is a bit archeaic when its used as a barometer for an act like this. What matters is how many people actually either 1)have the album regardless of purchase or steal 2) have an attraction or interest in the brand even if the didnt buy tylers album… These 2 things turn into revenue elsehwhere which is where the music business is heading.. Music leading the way towards other revenue streams..

    2. Merch: Vaid point.. I know someone who works with them on the merch side although he could be bullshitting.. we arent close

    3. Touring- I guess I wasnt specific when I said touring the world. These are major festivals in major time slots not some wack club show.. They also sold out a 1500 venue in amsterdam in 15 minutes. 3 nights in a row in london in 1 day. Australia sold out 5 SHOWS in 3 hours, 3 of them in the Opera House. They just sold out a 2000 seater in Dublin Ireland… They are playing primetime slot at the Reading Festival.. these are Nuvo Alchohol sponsored club nights and walk thrus.. this is their first run thru Europe and this is happening… Now im not sure how well J. Holiday is doing and if hes doing the above then your right but something in my gut says that not the case.

    4. Valid. Neither of us will know until we see it.. altho its impressive they got a show so early

    5. Publishing: I was referring to music publishing not the book and the deal where u get a big check (if your really buzzing) is an ad min deal which means the pub company simply does your adminstration work for a small % and you retain 85-95% ownership. So yes its possible and it happened.

    6. Touche- Opinion so that depends on person and their perspective..

  34. Meg says:

re: #3– I meant these are NOT Nuvo sponsored nights and walk thrus

@MEG trying real hard to get a job with RR. SMH..

And for the people saying it may be too soon, these guys been at it for over 5 years and you just now started knowing about them. Some of them were 13 and 14 then.

If you’re really up on West Coast hiphop, you may remember that a few years back West Coast artists were picketing in front of radio stations, cuz all they played was Weezy and not local artists. Now there’s a whole movement. Like it or not, it’s all good for hiphop.

    That is all.

  38. Sam I Am says:

My comment got removed with my response Meg. Maybe because I posted a link, who knows?

In a very brief summary of what was up before:
–OF just now got to 99.000 this week, and not 100,000. With all that promo and coverage, that isnt what I call “Big success”. Bootlegged albums dont always result in other alternate revenue streams. Sometimes, but not always.
–Touring in big venues dont have the same prestige as it used to. They’ll take anybody thats hot, and they dont have to be particularly talented. Reading through the front pages of RR will show you that (no shots).

Everything else we agree on. My thing is: when you do something, you either want to be the best or you just want to coast. If OF says this is their success, then fine, thats what they wanted, but from outside looking in, its just coasting. Nothing groundbreaking here.
