Jay-Z On Nurturing His Artists

[vodpod id=Video.15826828&w=540&h=350&fv=]

For some time now, lots of fuss has been made about the lack of public support from Jay-Z to his artists. After his press conference last week he spoke to MTV and compared running his label to having children. Leave it up to Jigga to transform boys to men like daycare.

“I think running a label is a bit like having kids. When you know someone needs more help, you help them. When you see that someone can make it on their own … you see Kanye or J. Cole, you see that sort of talent

NIGGA U DID NOTHING FOR KANYE DONT MENTION THAT NIGGA

    KANYE MADE HIMSELF

IF IT WASNT FOR DAME THERE WOULD BE NO KANYE

U WASNT EVEN FUCKING WITH YE BACK THEN

NOW THAT KANYE IS JUST AS BIG OF A ARTIST AS U U WANNA JUMP ON HIS BANDWAGON

  2. Haterz says:

^ he said he could make it on his own…..

  3. damone says:

Why you mad? There is no Kanye without Jay period… Theres no Dame without Jay period… So stop crying.

  4. Just Sayin says:

^ He said he let Kanye make it on his own….

  5. Benzo550 says:

Why didn’t ye go with dame then since dame did so much for him.

  6. unKut says:

Jay-Z is known for stealing styles from his artists. Beans, Young Chris, Freeway. BUT Jay-Z did let Kanye fully produce (minus 1/2 joints) the first Blueprint album which really put Kanye on the map. Jay didnt support J Cole at all.

  7. Able Danger says:

To all you artists out there, who don’t wanna be on a record label where the executive is…all up in the videos, all on the records, dancin’…then come to Roc Nation!

  8. tc says:

    lmaooo @ able danger

  9. Leezy says:

Some nigga ask me why Jay never shout me out
    Like I

  10. Reef says:

    Lol @ able danger

  11. Protektah X says:

When Jay Electronica dropping album? I think 2012 is a good year for dropping that album.
Five Percenters make best Hip Hop.

  12. MegaMan says:

‘Watch the Throne’ is Jay’s worst and proves that not only has he sold out to a more pop style it proves he’s fallen off alot as well.

‘Watch the Throne’ is a disgrace to hip hop.

People who like Jay-Z are the same people who like 50 Cent. Recognize real talent not these fakes like Jay-Z and 50 Cent!

True hip hop heads support real artists like Lil Wayne and Rick Ross.

  13. bylaw99 says:

Some of you niggas need to google that interview Kanye had with Sway, Sway asks Kanye flat out didnt Dame give you your shot and Kanye says yes so he goes on to ask Ye dont you feel you abandoned Dame to side with Jay when Jay didnt even want you to be a rapper…Kanye had the saddest look on his face and flat out said YES! Jay aint make shit in regards to Ye if it was up to Jay Ye would be a Just Blaze. Dame gave Ye his shot as an MC. So get of Jays sack he aint did shit for Ye as far as an artist. Matter fact Jay though Ye’s style didnt fit in with Rocafella.

  14. bylaw99 says:

@MEGAMAN..that comment alone is why you shouldnt be even taken seriously. William Roberts an ex-c.o and Dewayne a kid star who becomes a blood at 25 then begins skateboarding at 28 then starts wearing womens jeans…yeah thats real hiphop alright! _sarcasm_

  15. ZoomZoomDad-Otis says:

    J. Cole is doing his thing. Atleast he isn’t singing like some like drake. When ROC broke up i was mad as hell. But if you think about it thoses artists(Bleek, YG, Beans, O & Sparks) should’ve establish themselves prime example Sparks from S.P. could’ve made a lot $$$ from that 1 Jay-z song “Give It To Me”. But he didn’t have his publishing i think.

  16. Kunta Kente says:

    J. Cole is really Jay-Z first successful artist Memphis Bleek never was what he was supposed to be, Beanie flop, and Kanye was signed by Dame. Jay-Z has no choice but shout out Kanye all the time cuz Ye is single handly keep Hov relevant. Jay-Z won’t be able to make another solo album without production and cocepts from Kanye and No I.D

  17. Kunta Kente says:

@Bylaw99 damn that a old as interview from All Eyes On Kanye West. Kanye literly said I was disloyal to Dame.

  18. MakeAMark says:

Kanye had nothing to do with Jay-Z’s success. Jay-Z could have rapped acapella and gone platinum, and still can.You know how Jay-z made an impenetrable image without a deal. Not Jay-Z’s fault hes great at rapping; Dame providing service and got paid for them. No credit due to Dame except the job provided. I think J. coles not a great rapper, makes decent beats. Any artist on a major platform, especially with a Jay-Z co-sign, can have a career. Roscoe Dash’s like five years in and still selling records, and you know he’s not a great rapper.

  19. bylaw99 says:

@kunta kente..right and alot people give Jay-Z praise when he clearly just signs artist but does nothing for them. J.Cole made himself hot jay wouldnt even jump in a video but when Coles album pushed units Jay comes out talking like he was responsible. Perfect example look what happened when Jay was pres of Defjam..90% of the roster sat on the shelf and some artist who had been there for years careers vanished because of Jay. i.e , methodman redman, wutang, LL, DMX, ruff ryders..etc.

  20. MegaMan says:

    @ bylaw99

Lil Wayne is better than your favorite camel Slave-Z. Weezy killed Gay-Z.

  21. Kunta Kente says:

@bylaw99 agree… J. Cole earned everyone of his album sales by himself on low ass budget. I heard Jay-Z talk about J. Cole in last two months more than in past 3 years. Its not that he realize his talents its cuz he know he capilze off his success and take credit.

  22. bylaw99 says:

@MEGAMAN..yeah you’re right Weezy F. baby please say the baby because thats his lover really killed JayZ….Now you can log off grab ur skateboard sag ur skinny jeans put your red bandana in your back pocket and hit the streets. U’v officially lost it!

  23. Money and Power says:

To transalate what Jay Z is trying to say: Man i dont really want anything to do with that lil nigga, didnt you see i wanted Drake so bad.. thats why i was bringing him out on my tour not J Cole. I spent more money promoting J cole’s album that Watch The Throne, but sold more. I am now trapped because if i drop him, his stans will lash me and i will look like an ass. Im Hov so i have to be number 1 but with J Cole Roc Nation will never pop like that, that aren’t gonna happen with Drake… he is more talented and profitable. So now i just blackball J Cole on the low until he fade away..

  24. MegaMan says:

Real Talk Wayne and Drake are Better than Rick Ross and Meek Mill.

  25. damone says:

MegaMan u must be 10 Jay the boss how u slaving if you the boss stupid Wayne is not the boss universal is fool. Then baby then wayne. Then drake get his money after all those hands get it same as Nicki… Jay has put Rihanna to now tell me she was a star before jay. None of these guys were stars jay put them on. Drake and Nicki was out there before they signed.

  26. bylaw99 says:

@moneyandpower…you sir are completely correct. Funny how when Drake dropped his first album Jay ran to be on it and gave Drake a feat on the Blueprint 3 (no J.Cole) but meanwhile made J.Cole hold up his album from getting mastered to jump on it at the last minute. Like “Oh here you go lil nigga”!

  27. MegaMan says:

    @ bylaw99

I have been skateboarding since 2002. I’m a very good skater. I wear skinny jeans and I don’t like when men wear baggy ones like Gay-Z. Lil Wayne is my favorite rapper. Problem?

Damn I know you hate on my swag, because you have no life. Everyone in the hood respects me and I get more bitches than you. Lol

  28. Kunta Kente says:

@MONEYANDPOWER lmfao… Thats true tho Jay-Z wanted to sign Drake bad, once again Jay-Z was trying to take credit for a artist he didn’t discover. Look how quick Jay-Z summited his verse for “Light Up” while J. Cole was in every interview begging for a Jay-Z verse. Also on “A Star Is Born” yea Cole had a feature that was the hightlight of the song but Jay-Z said on that song “Drake Up Next” why couldn’t he shout out Cole if he had so much faith in him.

  29. damone says:

bylaw J Cole was on star is born… Haters please at least listen to Jay before u hate… lol

  30. bylaw99 says:

@damone…my bad I totally forgot about that (score 1 for Jay) but the fact still remains Jay doesnt do crap for his artist until they blow themselves up. I see you didnt dispute my other facts though.

  31. MegaMan says:

I’m a Odd Future reject. But Drake is from Canada but everyone in the bumps him.

  32. MegaMan says:

Did anybody else see B. Dot on YO MTV Raps looking like a fucking clown. You ain’t no hip-hop historian, what was Flavor Flav busy?

  33. Real Life says:

If you are not going to listen to a rapper because he skateboard, wear tight jeabs and kissed his dad.. you definitely need to read a book. I mean its all entertainment dont catch feeling on someone’s life. Listen to music

  34. veesky says:

I love how everyone says Jay does nothing 4 his artists like they’re sitting at every label meeting, listening to every phone call or private convo. U don’t know what goes on behind the scenes. Even Cole has talked about what he feels he’s gained from Jay as far as wisdom and experience…but ppl are mad bcuz he doesn’t go around holding his artists hands or being all up under them? We see how well that’s worked for Diddy…

  35. Brooklyn says:

@veesky… Were not askin his Hov to wear shinning suits and be all up in video. But damn give your artist a budget and don’t have them guessing on their release dates. Also Jay-Z has spoke on J. Cole career before why he so vocal now. He need to keep his dick licking lips shout like he was he always want to take credit for shit. Even that lil willow chick. Willow had a hit record before she signed to Roc Nation and this nigga acting like he discoverd her talent. Drake was smart for not signing to him.

  36. veesky says:

@Brooklyn I just think it’s a catch-22…when Jay has an artist that’s successful, ppl dont’ want him to take credit…when he has an artist that doesn’t do well, everyone blames him. How do you know that J. Cole didn’t have a budget? Did we forget that he had to reshoot the video for “Workout” since one version leaked? The “Can’t Get Enough” vid, “Who Dat?” vid…which we all saw was a bit premature…and that’s just video money. Tell me what Jay isn’t doing, that Sylvia, Lyor, L.A. or any of the other execs are doing…or haven’t done. We’ve seen plenty of artists go through plenty of “release dates” when singles/marketing/buzz isn’t quite what it needs to be (Jeezy anyone?)…even Cole himself said that he didn’t want his album to come out until he felt the most ppl possible would buy it.

I just think there’s a lot more action that goes down behind the scenes than ppl know. “…Everybody can tell you how to do it, they never did it…”

  37. Brooklyn says:

@veesky… Jay-Z hasn’t had that many artsit besides himself be successful. When he was at Roc-A-Fella it was team of people signing artist mostly joint ventures with extablished artist. Now he at Roc Nation that 100% Jay-Z so he give the green light on everything. I’ll give Jay-Z his props for signing J. Cole before anybody really know he was but damn at leat acknowledge him that his on your label. I understand he don’t wanna dick ride his own artist but then go and dick ride Drake in every interview. As far as the reshoot of “Work Out” come on bro that shit look like Jay-Z gave him chump change for that. The only big budget video was “Who Dat”. If I had a artist like J. Cole I would embrace that if Cole ask for a verse I would be like of course theres gonna be a officail Cole /Hov joint don’t wait last minute fucking with your artist. Jay-Z trying to make Cole commercial. He made Cole get in the studio with Stargate cuz he wanted a black & yellow type song when Cole clearly said he didn’t want a pop album.

  38. bhikku says:

@unkut While Blueprint did put Kanye on the map as a producer he only did 5 tracks out of the 15. Bink, Just, Blaze, Timbaland and Eminem did the rest. Check your facts.

And to the rest of y’all, niggas shouldn’t have to be handheld. Niggas are man enough to talk about killing but can’t handle their own business? Shyeeit. Me handing you an album budget, a verse, and talking about you incessantly in interviews ain’t enough? GTFOH. He did that and more with Sigel and State Prop. Looks like he should have stuck with emo niggas.

  39. John says:

What many don’t understand is…that Jay Z doesn’t want to babysit but give money and exposure to his artists…the rest is up to them.
He already took care of a bunch of artists with no substantial success. Plus he is an artist so he comes first….man this is America!!! Capitalism is no socialism!

For those who work: do your boss give you his seat, keys to the Benz and his wife’s juicebox???
    No!

Music is a business and what Jay Z did was helping those who could help themselves: Just Blaze, Young Guru, Lenny Santiago, Hip Hop since 1978, Rihanna, Kanye and a lot of people who did something with their own lives just by watching him or using his connections to make something.

J.Cole will be an entrepreneur if he keeps grinding like that and tha’s what Jay wants, being surrounded by leaders not soldiers/leeches.

Beanie sigel was flashing two Bentleys on one of his albums, where are they now? why he kept focusing on the streets when he could make himself a Life?

Business is no playpen, people kill you for an idea, from ideas come success/profits.

We should take some business classes to really understand what we’re talking about on these forums. Being a fan is cool but when you hit 40, what’ s left??

  40. M.T says:

Jay-z doesnt do anything for his artist? Jayz is the one who helped J Cole sequence his album right and he gives his opinion on certain things. He even gave him a spot on ” A Star is Born”. Just because he doesnt big J cole in public, that doesnt mean he doesnt do anything. He doesnt need to hold j.cole’s hand anyways. Look where Cole is now. He deserves the right to talk about j cole in interviews now because his method is working. Same goes for Kanye. Theres not much he could have done to help Kanye either. Let talent find its way.

  41. The Truth says:

@M.T shut your bitch ass up, you just said the same bullshit Jay-Z said. The fact is Kanye West deserves most credit for Jay-Z still being relevant. Jay-Z didn’t come with no concepts on Watch The Throne. I mean listening to a 42 year old rapper is getting played out. Jay-Z is the king of recycling bars and stealing niggas styles. Jay-Z is the most original rapper with that much star power. Its insane.

  42. M.T says:

    @ The Truth
yea i did say the same thing Jay-Z said cuz hes right. And how do u know Jay didnt come up with the concepts on Watch the Throne. Were u in the studio when they were making it?……yea i thought so
Jay would be relevant even without Kanye and who cares how old jay-z is. As long as he rapping about something relevant or GOOD, then ur age shouldnt matter.

  43. A Fat Nigga says:

    damn hes ugly

  44. Amp'd says:

what ya’ll need to understand is if jay-z would’nt have sold any records there would probably be no Rocafella records. which means there probably wouldn’t be no career for dame, or biggs, or kanye or beanie sigel or SP or sparks, or oscino, or Rocawear etc,. so i dont want to hear jay aint do nothing for nobody and Dame did everything. ,because both of them niggas put up the funds to start Rocafella,

  45. HMasterIce says:

I’m trying to get with Jay-Z and contract. I know what he means by stepping back and letting the artist take direction. If I dont like J. cole, and get signed to Roc Nation, I’m not going to give J. Cole any credit he doesnt need. I dont expect Jay-Z to defend J. Cole over me. Fact is, I’m a better rapper than J. Cole. The link’s to an unofficial release of twenty-eight bars. I rap.

  46. Kill says:

in 3 or 5 years this camel is irrelevant and nobody will pay attention to a camel anymore. so stop crying.

  47. luden says:

same thing could be said of lil wayne. what has he done for bow wow? tyga? if he was a true mentor, he would have told tyga to scratch his watch the clone album cover.

Wayne is NOT the reason why Drake and Nicki Minaj are succesful. They would have been successful on their own. stop lying to yourself.

  48. See what im saying nigga? says:

YO IF AN ARTIST CANT MAKE IT UNDER JAY Z NAME THEN U SHOULDN’T BE IN THE GAME.

  49. WOWWAKEUPFOOL says:

look at @HMasterIce talking bout what he do if jay-z took him on “yah big muthfuka im dreaming please dont wake me up headass”

    1. buttonup says:

I hardly dream any chump. Bottom line is, I’m probably the best rapper alive. Show some honor to your Master, me.
