New Music: Kendrick Lamar x Gunplay “Cartoon & Cereal”

At times, Kendrick’s quirkiness can be hit or miss. And this new track is an example of the latter. The beat’s not bad, but the long intro and inconsistent pauses are. Can’t front, this one comes off a bit soggy. Produced by THC.

  16. B.itch K.iller James says:

Wow, this is a great and original track, which shows how sonically advanced K.Dot really is compared to his peers. I can’t believe out of all the garbage Rap Radar posts objectively THIS is the shit they have to call out and insult twice. Those ‘pauses’ aren’t blank spaces, they are portions of music. You know someone doesn’t have to be singing or rapping on the whole track for it to be a great rap song. This is an epic track that can stand up with some of Kanye’s most theatrical productions….and it’s about “Cereal and Cartoons”

    CHECK YA HEAD B.DOT!

  45. Jaymalls says:

  46. Dujay says:

  51. Das says:

    SICK! KENDRICK IS SICK!

  52. Boomshakalaka says:

Rap Radar hates Kendrick cause dude is better than most coming out of New York. We all know damn well that if this was something French Montana did (dude doesn’t have the skills to pull something like this off) they’d be on his nuts hard. B.Dot was shitting on Earl badly too cause he’s better than most NEW artists coming out of NY. But hey whatever Rap Radar still brings the exclusive shit just some things they do that makes you go really? O_o like the whole Rick Ross/MMG, Jay-Z, Ye, Drake dick riding, with that being said great record by Kendrick Lamar and Gunplay went in as well which was surprising

  53. Eb3 says:

This shit fire. Kendrick on a different level

  54. mac DIESEL says:

    ————————————————————–
    Completely agree

i still love drake and j.cole just as much when comeback season and/or friday nightlights/the warm up came out. People need to start listening with their ears instead of with their eyes. stop worrying about how popular someone is.

  57. phraynkhp says:

  63. HK says:

  64. MalDB says:

Yall niggas crazy if you think this song is a Miss? Really rap radar? So we condemning great creativity now? This is Hip Hop at its finest. Fresh and Creative. Fuck what you heard. Im riding with everybody from TDE right about now! West-coast killing Shit!

    Hot-diggy-damn this track go HARD

  71. Advercity says:

I cant get with this. Just because somethings different doesnt mean its tight. I’d rather hear about something relevant than fiction rap.

  72. dumb niggas these days says:

    yo @advercity
how the fuck is it fiction? he’s talking about the shit that happens in compton
and its not even out there, has a weird-ish intro but apart from that it’s a straight hip hop track
    niggas is buggin

    1. Advercity says:

I listened to the whole song, and I didnt hear anything about life observations, perspective, or any coherent story, only how he thought cartoons were G as a kid. No relevance like I said. Now as far as hip-hop goes, I listen and make rap music. Hip-hop is a watered down and less skilled version (class/derivitive) of rap. I’m not targeting anyone but you when I say that hiphop fans dont have significance to acknowledge substance that rap has.

  73. EJIKE says:

@adversity thats cause you are not taking the time to process something like this that has a high thc… listen, study… kendrick alike jay electronic, andre 3k are artist that you have to REALLY LISTEN AND WANT TO UNDERSTAND… at the of the day, if you cant get it? try RAP Genius (great cite) here is a link for this song http://rapgenius.com/Kendrick-lamar-cartoon-and-cereal-lyrics
    @dumbniggasthesedays i got em… he just need a lil push. lol #NONEGATIVITY

  74. EJIKE says:

@ADVERSITY Metaphors is what is his ingredients… complex ones at that.

    1. Advercity says:

Hey, I listened, I’m just not interested in the kid stuff. I’d rather hear a rappers more practical observations. There was nothing he was talking about. If he was talking about elmer couldnt catch the rabbit and linking the occurance to despair, then thats intriguing. I didnt get any significant content from the verse.

  75. Shooga says:

@Advercity Ye I know Kendrick is not that good, thats why West coast passed him the torch #NUFFSAID

    1. Advercity says:

Hey, Game is garbage, and most, no, each west coast rapper rap about the cliche murder murder lifestyle when zero have any murders to their repoire. The Game passing the torch to Lamar is nothing to get too excited about. I havent decided to discredit the west coast pioneers, still I could. So aside from Dr. Dre and Snoop, west coast pioneers, the west coast rappers have a enclosed proximitied fanbase. Lamar has the opportunity to expand and that is why west coast patrons are so excited. Plus Game got global after fifty cent. Fifty’s an icon, and Game got lucky by being put into G-unit, just like The Pill got lucky being put into MMG; just Game was rapping fifty’s raps (you do know 50 wrote for game on collabs and Games solo album)., Maybe if Ross wrote for The Pill, the Pill’d be global today. Anyway, Lamar’s rap lacked coherency and relevance to life.

  76. kill says:

Dont take it so personally guys; some people are just naturally too stupid to understand what’s going on here, and they like to name themselves things like “Advercity” and claim that “rappers” like Lil Wayne and Wiz Khalifa go deeper than “hip hop artists” like Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica. It’s ok. In a few years, he’ll graduate high school, and then he’ll either understand how ignorant he used to be, or having failed that, he’ll probably just get hit by a slow-moving truck or something.

    1. Advercity says:

I despise lil wayne today. Wiz khalifa, What a joke. I’m a jay-z fan and not even fond of J.cole. I rap myself and I’m super dope. Your insinuations reveal your blunderful person. And Electronica – egyptology is dead and so is the mind of his fans and himself. Anyway, you cant argue with the facts I present, so make sure you try to stay relevant and find a decent trend to follow because you by yourself is not significant.

    2. Advercity says:

You must not have read my comment any because I didnt mention lil wayne or wiz khalifa. You made false accusations and are certainly looking for some acknowledgement from somebody. Anyway, my statements outweigh your weak opinions.

  77. EJIKE says:

    Lol at @Kill….. I tried

  78. leon says:

this shit is fire. fuck every body.

  79. Mario says:

Good ole Ross Radar always giving fair and balanced opinions on hip-hop. Go big Meek Mill and Drake new bullshit

  80. ARC says:

fuck how you feel about the song. Just post the music!

  81. UrbanHippiie says:

Aye this track hard. I don’t care what nobody say, it’s different, it’s original, he ain’t imitating no body or trying to hard he just being K. Dot naw mean

I didn’t know who Gunplay was but after this I would like to hear more from dude

  82. D. L. says:

@advercity you are too slow to understand this song. Catch word is it’s ironic. The storyline is when he was a kid like all kids we watch cartoons and eat cereal. His mom went and got high told him to go watch cartoons and don’t grow up like her. It’s IRONIC because all he see is wild e coyotes because he’s high. In the same situation his mom was steering him away from. He talks about his feelings and everything. With the elmer fudd chant in the background. This track is dope. You don’t realize how much music these artist put out. Every track can’t be the same subject matter as section 80. Before you ridicule something analyze it. K.dot and big Krit is balancing hiphop respectfully.

    1. advercity says:

I have a great ear for music and it’s not prejudice. I look for great music and didnt get the message in this song. Blatent and upfront music takes more skill to create. Example, not many people understand Lupe Fiasco’s lyrics – thats shows a weakness in Lupe and not a strength. Easier to understand and still creative and appealing is sign of greatness. In sports my motto was, “good players make great plays”. I just didnt get the song, and I did try to; if it was morepractical, it would help the listener. His loyal fan advocate him and maybe thats who he writes for.

  83. D. L. says:

And no I’m not a thug or none of that but I did came from the hood and moved out. I’m 23 I’m in the air force and in 1st year of medical school. Jay-z and all them brought so much hate and greed into hip hop it’s a shame. money this, money that, sell this drug, that drug, what do jay-z talk about that don’t contradict himself… murder to excellence is the biggest contradiction on wtt. Though that song represent black pride it provokes racism and a greed for money to be this new black elite. BS in my ears.

  84. BJS says:

Wawawa. The intro is too long. Wawawa. Sorry for all of you who need instant gratification. Go listen to “pop rap” if you wanna hear a song that instantly pleases you. Fuckin weenies.
