  14. gerald says:

    He ain’t lying tho!

  15. the brain trust says:

Don’t get me wrong, Lu’s verses on this are phenomenal.

    BUT

    1. There are some classic hip hop samples you shouldn’t touch (unless you completely flip it) & the producer didn’t.

    2. This cannot be a single cuz it’s not getting anywhere near radio.

  16. mac DIESEL says:

    @ M.T.

I JUST READ THEM PETE ROCK TWEETS!!!! NIGGA IS DEFINITELY NOT HAPPY!!!! HA!!!! IF HE’S THAT PISSED, I KNOW FOR SURE LUPE DIDN’T CONTACT PETE ROCK ABOUT USIN’ THE BEAT!!!! OUTTA RESPECT, HE SHOULDA ASKED PETE ROCK FIRST!!!! CUZ IT’S A PERSONAL RECORD FOR PETE ROCK AND CL!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  17. the brain trust says:

Oh Pete Rock said the exact same thing.

i agree with him completely. The producer should be ashamed.

  18. urrrr says:

lupe save hip hop for me

  19. Something Greater says:

Real hip hop shit, but should have used an original beat, you cant fuck with a classic

DONT YOU HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!!

  22. GTFOH says:

Well fuck you then Pete Rock. Its a new era get with it, yes its dope why else would somebody want to sample it? Whats not pleasing to you is pleasing someone else. If everything should stay in the past then what you got a twitter for? And you better have no smartphone neither. Yall so hung on only back in the day shit is hiphop, times change, things change. get with it if not, shut the fuck up and stay in the past. bullshit.

  23. ablacktv says:

Pete Rock. Much Respect. but chill the fuck out…its homage, niggaz love the beat man, soon as it started i was like kill it LU! and he did…making the OGs look bad again smh – @ablacktv

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  25. Gond says:

Definitely feeling this track… Lupe never fails to impress me

  26. DJAR says:

This is classic Lupe here, the GOAT is finally coming out to release the true shit. I do get the Pete Rock disagreement, the beat it EXACTLY the same as the TROY song. Producer shouldve flipped it completely, but come on Pete, what other nigga would you want to spit over this sample? Aint nobody like Lupe, and Lupe killed this shit man, aint nothing about it. Enjoy the good music fam

  27. BHRAMA says:

Didn’t Pete rock get sample from large pro… To dedicate dude that died when they were kids when heavy d was there?

    Hot track!!!

  28. Lucaz says:

Pete Rock talking about originality? his whole career is based off sampling other peoples music! The Irony.. Niggas cry about there being no “real hip hop” Lupe drops this and now its still a problem. Make up your fucking mind.

  29. jc says:

So pete rock is made that another producer sampled the same shit he did? Dude, u aint write the OG track, u flipped it. U got no right to claim ownership of that sample soul brother

  30. Peekay says:

love Lupe but gotta side with P.R. T.R.O.Y. is a CLASSIC, not to be touched

  31. Puff says:

Ya, he wont over this a LONG time ago…..
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B98_o_BGIEE
much better back in the day

  32. jobie says:

I could understand being offended if the record was a club song by Wiz Khalifa or something. But it’s a true conscious Lupe fiasco track. Hip hop is about sampling. The people will love this song and more people will go and learn the original. Everybody wins.

  33. mac DIESEL says:

IT’S NOT ABOUT THE SAMPLING U FUCKIN’ CLOWNS!!!! IT’S ABOUT LUPE NOT ASKIN’ PETE ROCK TO USE THE BEAT!!!! U NIGGAS ARE THAT FUCKIN’ STUPID??!!!

…..AND TO BE HONEST, WUT THE FUCK DID SIMONSAYZ & B-SIDET PRODUCE ANYWAY??!!! THEY DIDN’T HEAR ‘EM ADD ANYTHING TO THE BEAT AT ALL!!!! UNLESS MY HEARING IS FUCKED UP!!!!

  36. zezzoi says:

Please…Pete rock is just mad cuz he doesn’t know the producers who flipped it. If someone like Kanye did this same exact thing, Pete rock wouldn’t give two shits. Hell he’d be all over its balls to try and get some exposure for himself. Similar to that The Joy record.

  37. BCR says:

Pete Rock is a major hypocrite. How can someone that made a career out of sampling other people’s music get mad that somebody sampled his song which is also composed of a sample from someone else? “Rap’s an art form, you don’t own no loops”-Guru

  38. TeeCartt says:

    Mac’s assistant dick eatin’…LMAO

  39. ablacktv says:

its good hip hop at the end of the day…fuck the politics…and procedures, its good shit.

  40. KILLA says:

Pete Rock need to kill himself. Nigga how you gon’ get mad at someone sampling something you sample from a song a person sampled from another person? LOL Nigga’s egos these days. SMH

  41. mac DIESEL says:

    @ London Black

GET WUT YOU’RE SAYIN’ BUT IT REALLY HAS NOTHIN’ TO DO WIT SAMPLING!!!! IT’S ABOUT THE USE OF THE SONG THAT WAS PERSONAL TO PETE ROCK!!!! FROM THE TWEETS BY PETE ROCK, LUPE DIDN’T CONTACT PETE ROCK ABOUT USIN’ THE BEAT!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  42. M.T says:

There are certain records that simply shouldnt be touch. Even though Pete Rock may have sampled another artist for that track, he feels that this particular song shouldnt have been touched. Thats why he feels the need to speak for his artistic integrity. Niggas need to realize and understand this before blindly calling a someone a hypocrite or making ignorant statements.

  43. HOVA says:

So unoriginal. Lupe Fiasco is a flop, he should retire. He is getting lamer and lamer each album. SMH. My condolences goes out to HIP-HOP.

Lupe killed it. Hook is dope.

  46. FukUrOpinion says:

Not feeling it. Gotta side with Pete Rock because the producer was lazy on this one. It sounds exactly like the original. Should’ve been more original and I think Rock would’ve been okay with it. I think that’s why he’s mad because it lacks originality. It should’ve had a modern spin on it. No way Kanye would’ve sampled T.R.O.Y. and not put a spin on it. Not really feeling Lupe on it either. Sounds generic to me.

    DON’T HATE MY OPINION!

  47. shamboogie says:

i like the lyrics but, troy is ingrained in my brain. i don’t like how the sample is flipped.

  51. You young guys do not read or pay attention very well. This is not about Old School Hip-Hop vs New School Hip-Hop. This is about respecting our craft, and respecting those who came before you.

The producer of this T.R.O..Y. knock off cant be a true Hip-Hop cat, because he wouldnt of touched this particular beat if he was. Its not the sample in question, its him remaking the same beat.
Pete Rock made T.R.O.Y. when his best friend died. That song was to let him know he will never be forgotten.

Its sad that you guys truly dont understand why Pete Rock is upset.

  52. Luminous Story says:

Lupe has always been mediocre. I don’t know why so many people like him, guess he rocking their fav brand or something because his music is mad weak. K. Dot’s joint today is amazing.. Lupe, take notes.

  53. […] #1 isn’t too pleased with that. Here’s a synopsis of his Twitter rant, courtesy of Rap Radar: No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone. Feel so […]

  54. pienman says:

damn…. this is the dope shit! the sample i can feel but, damn lupe back with them lyrics man….

    the homie killed this shit

  55. shane says:

why is pete rock hating on lupe? lupe already rapped over this song earlier in his carreer *nudge* dope boy *nudge**

  56. pulp fiction says:

    this shit is wack

  57. Dewan says:

T.R.O.Y. was already remade in ’08 with Wale and Lupe. Plus, if the song is so dear to his heart why did he sell the rights to have it featured in a video game (Madden ’12)?

Rappers always jack for beats, nothing new. And you can’t talk about originality when you sampled the song. Bottom line, Pete Rock, make a song better than TROY. It’s only been 20 years.

  58. YOU CAN'T KILL ME says:

PETE ROCK NEEDS TO PULL HIS SKIRT UP LIKE AMAYA. mac, STOP SUCKING LUPE’S DICK. WE ONLY WANT LASERS.

    WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

  59. DirkDiggler says:

Wow, shame on Lupe for using this beat. Complete garbage.

  60. ncprecise says:

maan, I’m a big Pete Rock fan… but he’s tripping. Sampling is sampling. And as a matter of fact, 9th chopped up a piece of Troy on The Listening. Damn, people just get bitter with age lol… btw… Pete Rock is the f’n man. One of the dopest to ever do it. Still sounds bitter though lol

  61. Black Shady says:

If he sampled a part of the song….i’d be aight with it

its basically the same fuckin beat. FUCK THAT i aint down with that

  62. m says:

Lupe killed it ..what the f is pete rock talkin about? Lupe did a great job

  63. dopeness says:

the one time lupe does some hip hop shit….smh

  64. TeamNYX says:

NO ROYALTY CHECK for Pete. This is a sample. The publishing goes to to the owner of the original sample only. They did not sample pete rocks & cl smooth’s record. they took the sample same as pete rock did.

  65. TeamNYX says:

Lupe killed dis. It needed to come back. Sorry Pete.

  66. Ronald says:

I expected better shit. He sampled too much of the T.R.O.Y. sound so much he fucked up the whole song. It would of been ill if he would of done it just at the start of the song for 20 seconds at least then change shit up.

  67. recordpusher says:

FACT.. there was a conf call today with Dj Woo Kid and Lupe.. He asked Lupe about it and Lupe said that he got the blessing from Pete Rock to re-make the record.

    obviously he lied.

This is new therefore everything before it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if it’s a wack hack version of the original. It’s okay Lupe didn’t just go over over the original.

Somebody should take this record, and get Lil Wayne, Drake & Nicki Minaj on it so it could be doper than his… because it’s newer and has more relevant artists on it. That’s how the rules work now right?

Lupe is such a fucking fraud. Chicago… clean up on Isle 4. Get this clown outta here.

  73. Real Rap says:

It’s not about him doing the track/sample over… it’s about the producer hacking the shit and Lupe a so called hip hop head not acknowledging shit.

I mean if that’s what you fucking new faggots are into? No wonder why you hoe ass new niggas can’t get no good original movies. Yall are into crappy remakes.

HAHAHAHAHAH. Get money. Lets recycle everything badly and sell it to these fucking fags growing up today.

  76. RealTalk says:

I see what Pete Rock meant with the producer not doing much different, and he showed he respected Lupe. But he should also chill and realize that he sampled a sampled sample. And that happens always in hip-hop. Hopefully, Rock makes some gwap on this to help calm his nerves. Talking bout he the best ever. Who knows? He may be.

  78. recordpusher says:

He’s sad because that song is so special. Tom Scott gave him the blessing to sample those horns.
T-Roy is a real person who died… the song is an all time Hip Hop classic. Lupe’s people didn’t get the blessing from Pete

Atlantic records is releasing this as Lupe’s first single… where instead, he should have just rapped over the original on a mixtape.. not re-working it to an official single

It’s one thing to flip a sample someone else uses. It’s another thing to COMPLETELY COPY someone else’s beat. This shit sucks

  81. FTW says:

Of course the lyrics are dope, but Lupe is old enough to know better. I would understand if he wasn’t old enough to have a point of reference like some of these commenters but Lupe knows how emotional that shit was and now he’s attempting to build on sacred burial ground. The producer used the sample in the context of TROY, when there’s a million and one ways to flip that Jefferson Airplane sample. He could have grabbed it at the end or further up, it’s a whole saxophone solo for christ’s sake. Nah he grabbed that shit just like Pete did, so it would be reminiscent of TROY, no pun intended.

Just apologize get an original track from Pete himself and move on.

    FTW

  82. Obama says:

In case you haven’t figured it out yet… Pete Rock’s mad because he’s completely irrelevant in the game… Just like all the other artists who laid the foundation for this music. Unfortunately the industry hasn’t emphasized the importance of our history to the younger generations. As long as the kids are buying whatever bullshit the industry is selling them, it’s all good…

  83. FTW says:

Saying Pete Rock is irrelevant in hip hop is just some stupid shit to type with no supporting argument.

    The Joy is irrelevant? Really?

  84. Trillionaire says:

most of you are complete dumbasses..trying to discredit Pete Rock because he is not a fan of someone re-creating his beat is ignorant. Lupe went in on the verse but using the beat like that lacks originality period. I know Pete Rock sampled the horns but he turned it into a classic hi-hop beat..that shit they just did is a rip off in the highest degree and for what? Its like someone remaking Jay-Z Hard knock Life beat. We know where the sample came from but why the fuck would you remake it? some shit should go untouched out of respect. I’m a young cat so its definitely not about old school vs new school.. its these new niggas with great aspirations but lack of respect that say and do anything.. I still fucks with Lupe .. He a positive brother ..just trying to make good music

  85. pienman says:

still the producer could’ve flipped this shit…. but, all in all the lupe we all luv is back on them fatal lyrics mannnnnn!
