It was pretty crowded on the RapFix stage earlier today. After A$AP Rocky’s chat with Sway, Ferg, Twelvy and Nast joined him for a freestyle before exiting the premises. Cut. Start over. Ha!

For the young rap fans who dont know that written raps are not freestyle, this was not a freestyle.

And for the old washed up fans… (For example, take Mr. Calamitycal right here above me). Now-a-days for the most part a freestyle just consists of your best, wittiest, clever, boastful, lines that embody you bar after bar, having no conceptual substance to it (just as a traditional freestyle would) but now in the new age usually just pre-written. When it comes down to it whether it’s written or not it’s just a stream of consciousness but in rap form. If the bars are dope and you haven’t heard them before, who really gives a fuck?

    1. calamitycal says:

Well I’m a writer and like to listen to rap, I think’s an insult when a rapper says they freestyle’d the rap when they wrote they rap. I’m not going to scrutinize the rap for no reason, seems insulting for the rapper to write a rap and then try to get the credibility or allowances that come with really freestyling.

we all know that freestyles arent off the top…unless stated other wise….well i hope we do….twinkle in her eye line was good…..rest was hot sewage waste

    1. calamitycal says:

The problem is that rappers started to label writtens as freestyles in order to get some credibility for a talent they dont have. Freestyling is a separate are from writing. Freestyles are strictly impromtu and not premeditated. Rappers know that too, only have been getting by without being confronted by eager rap fans.

Wow, this nigga is more talented than Rakim. Niggas like A$AP Rocky, Chief Keef, 2 Chainz, French Montana, Lil B, Future, Cash Out, Iggy Azalea and Waka Flocka saved hip hop.

As far as my knowledge is concerned, A freestyle might be off the top or pre-written but as long as the artist has not recorded the material before for commercial use and is not planning to do so after dropping the freestyle.

@Soul Position I dont think its appropriate to mention A$AP Rocky in the same list with Future and that Cash Out guy, A$AP is a lyrical rapper.

The conclusion to the written v.s. freestyle debates is that raps classify as being written or freestyled. If a rap was written at any time and then performed, the rap is not a freestyle.Hip Hop Og, Great definition. The rappers know they arent freestyling because when they started rapping (as a hobby or outlet, people really freestyled, and because they arent confronted about mislabeling, they think they are decieving the listener and gaining intrigue of having had freestyled. Freestyling is a separate art from reciting a written rap. If the listener’d stop patronizing mediocrity and tell blog sites and rappers that they know what freestyles are and that writtens are not freestyles, then you’d probably discover a new great artist.
