The times they are a-changin’. With Kendrick Lamar’s album dropping on Monday, Pharrell turned to his Twitter account and compared Kendrick’s music to Mr. Tambourine Man, Bob Dylan.
@Pharrell. @kendricklamar is this era’s Bob Dylan. Masterful story telling. Listen to it, it will elevate you. And just like that music has changed. … @kendricklamar Sick hooks, beats, perspective and zero MSG. Individuality always wins. Goodnight me too’s and blendinables.#OTHER

Kendrick’s GKMC is the 2nd best album released this year behind Rozay’s GFID. One day, Kendrick might take Rozay’s GOAT title away from him

  2. KIM K'S DIRTY UNDERWEAR says:

^lmao you a fool for that one

  5. Winston Churchill says:

    Welp, officially overrated.

  6. j says:

hell no! Kendrick prob the best rapper, but sometimes he doesnt keep it simple enough…bob dylan was great at that

  7. Anon DCPL says:

Rick Ross is this generations Al Yankovic

  8. ? says:

    @Baous

The fact you put Rick Ross as a GOAT just makes any opinion you have irrelevant. Aint no way Kendrick’s album second to Ross in any fuckin way

  9. AK47 says:

voice is weak and his hooks are terrible..

  10. George Soros says:

Why is it cool to wear tight pants? I don’t get it.

Oh, and I’ll be deleting the poetic justice track from my GKMC track list. I can’t Fathom that prissy chick drake’alina.

  11. cness says:

Bob Dylan really lets see if people even remember Kendrick in 50 years

  12. Dashing says:

Sure fire sign that you’re album is classic?

People saying that worst song on it is the next hit single. (and let’s be honest most of that hate is because Drake’s on it)

good kid m.A.A.d city though….. Good Lord! Best rap album since……

    ….

I don’t know. It’s been YEARS since a album this good came out. Yes, it’s better than Section 80. Yes, it’s better than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. No, it’s not too early to call it a classic.

Yes, Kendrick Lamar is currently the best MC out. Best lyricist, best guest feature, best songwriter, best ALBUM.

    Hip hop is BAAAAAAACK!

  13. Get Real says:

Now that’s what I call an overstatement!!!

  14. caseyp says:

Obviously all u dumb nigs need to listen to the lyrics again. Pharrell didn’t need a 2nd hearing

  15. SpaceGhostBlacc says:

dick riding at best, kendrick lamar is becoming overrated now, he’s still one of my favorites though

  16. Nathaniel says:

    @B.Dot

how the fuck you gon’ shit on a young HIP HOP ARTIST as important as kendrick is, these days? it’s an honor to be compared to a great musician. we should celebrate the possibility towards greatness as the young man matures. you got a straight negro mentality, joe. if WE recognize greatness in OUR OWN artists that represent OUR ART well, we won’t even stupidly take the position that the so-called great white artists are the benchmark they have to elevate to.

some of y’all are straight sick in the head.

  17. CLASSICS says:

GKmC is a classic in the making, people aren’t ready for change seriously. The whole album is a story…a mini-movie like he stated. The lyricism is through the roof…his delivery is all over the place because he CLEARLY doesn’t want to sound like any other artist…what he did with this album is a new genre of music. no one in hip hop is doing anything remotely similar to this

  18. Hip-Hop Fiend says:

I fucks with Pharrell and Kanye but those two are always comparing niggas. Kendrick Lamar is NOT the Bob Dylan of this era, Kendrick Lamar is the KENDRICK LAMAR of this era! K. Dot made his own lane he will no doubt be a legend. Just like J. Cole is not the 2 Pac or Nas of this generation he is the J. COLE of this generation. Let these artist be the artist they want to be and stop comparing.

  19. Nathaniel says:

and what is overrated? better than, by your estimation, an artist deserves to be called? what is “dick riding?” championing the work of an artist to a degree that…. you, once again, believe is too much for however great you feel their work is?

it’s one thing to have an opinion. it’s another thing to be a crab. your and my measure is not THE measure. have enough respect for a guy like Pharrell (work speaks for itself) to examine kendrick closely at his urging. and just watch, and see what he does.

it’ll be much harder for the kendricks among us to be inspired in such a way that aids their ascent when the community/culture out of which they come, that they represent, constantly tries to dim their light. this is a microcosm to a much bigger problem with black people in general. the “oh, jay only own a fraction of the nets” crowd. that’s y’all. and it’s sad. tf?

  20. ... says:

Thats the stupidest comment pharrell has ever made

  21. Nathaniel says:

i respect what @Hip-Hop Fiend says. i respect that perspective, yo. i do.

  22. dopeontherise says:

Pharrell you said the same exact thing about Charles Hamilton

  23. chillthrills says:

hahahahahahaaaaaa!!!!!!BOB DYLAN,,,,,,,CAN LIL DUDE EVEN PLAY AN INSTRUMENT,,,,FOH,,,,PHARRELL, MUST HAVE MONEY IN THAT PROJECT,,,,,HE’S DELIRIOUS

  24. @rowjayC.O.B says:

Kendrick is a dope artist but his voice and flow at times drive me crazy

  25. beaming says:

Pharrells opinions are irrelevent guy has produced a dope beat in years, but Kendrick is on his way to making history no doubt about that

  26. still best rite now!! says:

something tells me…if Pharrell made these comments about a NY rapper the B. Dot wouldnt object

  27. CaliSteppin says:

Kendricks album is a classic and like some dude above me said it’s not too early to call it that. Every song is at least very good. Dying of thirst and black boy fly are some epic story telling

  28. STINKMEANER says:

kendrick is great but we gotta stop this comparing artists to other artists shit. that is a childish perspective, always trying to compare things we are familiar with.

the best way to do this is to actually listen. kendrick is his own thing. kobe and lebron will never be michael jordan.

stop using childish comparisons to describe another person’s talent or accomplishments.

  29. chillthrills says:

@NATHANIEL,,I SEE YOU ON YOUR SOAP BOX,,,,HOWEVER,,,,WHEN WACK JUICE IS DRIPPING FROM EVERY WHERE,,,AND ARTIST ARE FAKER THAN A 3 DOLLAR BILL,,,,PEOPLE WILL SCRUTINIZE MORE THAN NORMAL,,,BECAUSE THERE IS NO ARTIST DEVELOPMENT,,,,,EVERYBODY AND THERE MOTHER THINK THEY CAN RAP,,,,,PHARREL SHOULD HAVE COMPARED HIM TO ONE OF HIS CONTEMPORARIES….NOT BOB DYLAN,,,,,SHIT IF ANYTHING PHARREL IS PROMOTING BOB DYLAN,,,,KENDRICK LAMAR HAS A LOT OF WORK TO DO TO EVEN GET CONSIDERED IN BOB DYLANS LEAGUE,,,,,,,

  30. Nathaniel says:

    @chillthrills

in america, a rapper’s catalogue (especially not a black one) won’t be likened to any of america’s dear white musicians catalogues. this IS america. it’s not that our artists haven’t been great, masterful, totally transformative of american culture inside out… but the recognition from white america is what most of us as black people wait on.

    it never comes.

then, we say “oh… *insert white guy* is this and that!” why? because someone else told us so. we should start saying, well from our lens, which is a different lens than you all’s, *insert Black artist* is the master of this and that. of storytelling. etc etc. so i’m not waiting on a rapper branded like kendrick to receive bob dylan accolades from america (that won’t happen) before i tip my hat to the brother. that’s all i’m saying. i’m not even agreeing or disagreeing with pharrell on the comparison. but OUR responses to what he said show our own foolishness.

i respect what you say though, especially about the reasons people scrutinize, so. i think another reason is plain old envy, too.

  31. Winston Churchill says:

Why was Kendrick doing all those weird voices on the album? It was like silly Eminem shit.

  32. Kanye West says:

Drake is the MC Hammer of this era

  33. chillthrills says:

@nathaniel,,,,,true,,,,,they stole the soul anyway,,,,lets hope kendrick can rise above expectations,,,

  34. the brain trust says:

I BEEN tryna tell niggas. This kendrick album is something special.

Listen to the unusual flows he employs, the vivid storytelling, the skits that link one song to the next, his unorthodox hook writing ability, the album’s overall theme; and how it ties into the Cover Art.

It’s quite sad that some people seek to deride ANYTHING any rapper does. No matter how memorable.

    Fuck B. Dot.

  35. KIM K'S DIRTY UNDERWEAR says:

why is it once a nigga makes it in the rap game they suddenly overrated? lil wayne is what u call overrated somebody please name me his hardest verse since he got out of prison ?

  36. GKMC102212 says:

^EXACTLY!!! DON’T JUDGE KENDRICK LAMAR UNTIL YOU’VE HEARD THIS ALBUM! THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM I’VE HEARD IN YEARS AND THAT’S BECAUSE THIS HAS CONTENT, IT HAS A CONCEPT, HE TELLING A STORY THROUGHOUT THE ALBUM, MUSIC IS A FORM OF ART, IT’S SUPPOSED TO PAINT A PICTURE IN YOUR HEAD OR MAKE YOU FEEL SOME KIND OF EMOTION AND I HAVEN’T HEARD THAT FROM TOO MANY ALBUMS THESE PAST FEW YEARS! I THOUGHT THIS GENERATION WAS GON HAVE TO SUFFER FROM WACK ASS MUSIC I REALLY FELT BAD THAT OUR YOUNGINS HAD TO GROW UP LISTENING TO ALL THIS MUSIC PLAYED ON THE RADIO AND SHIT BUT KENDRICK MAKING AN IMPACT NOT ONLY ON HIP HOP BUT ON MUSIC! THIS AIN’T NO DICK RIDING ITS JUST RECOGNIZING REAL MUSIC WHEN IT NEEDS TO BE RECOGNIZED.. #GKMC

  37. 1980 MY POPS NUTTED says:

Kendrick is that nigga but AB-SOUL got the information

  38. Hip-Hop Fiend says:

Where were you when you first heard Good Kid, m.A.A.d City? Thats the question that will be ask 10 years from now! It comes as no surprise that K. Dot delivered a classic album. He hasn’t sold out and never will, thats why it took him so long to sign a deal because if the right situation didn’t come along he would of just remained independent. Hip-Hop is very much alive just cuz a artist isnt all over the radio or dosen’t have a million hits on youtube dosen’t mean there isn’t talent out here. I told yall pay attention to the artist who take there time perfecting there craft like K. Dot, J. Cole, Jay Electronica, and Big K.R.I.T

  39. Crewz Control says:

@1983mypopscame ^^^ Dead True , Sad that Ab-Soul will never get recognize in mainstream hiphop …

  40. Citylivin' says:

it’s WAY too late to hate on Kendrick now…where were y’all niggas when Overly Dedicated came out?….it still confuses me tho how artists like Kendrick who make real music get slandered so hard…and weak artist(not saying no names, just visit RR you’ll see them) get praised for bullshit….o well…even Michael Jordan had haters..
….and that “Money Trees” with Jay Rock >>>>

  41. @p0is0nedkoola says:

Nas is the Bob Dylan of hip hop so Pharrell is tripping.

Nas/Dylan, both put out huge classic, widely influential albums at a very young age.
Na/Dylan, decide to totally change their sound against fans/critics wishes
Nas/Dylan, both make albums that have nothing to do with their previous “hits” or current “sound”
Nas/Dylan, both make full albums dedicated to one subject ie. Religion, Marriage
Nas/Dylan, both acknowledge their influences with songs/albums about their music heroes
Nas/Dylan, both make epic albums when everyone doubted they “had it” anymore (Stillmatic, Time Out Of Mind)

Nas 20+ years in the game
Dylan 50 +(!) years in the game

Chill Skateboard P. KL has one album so far.

    @p0is0nedKoolA on twitter

  42. Baous says:

@HipHopFiend “where were you when you first heard GKMC?” Nobody will be asking that, they’ll be asking “where were you when you first heard GFID?”

  43. SpaceGhostBlacc says:

It’s just that you niqqas overhype kendrick lamar soooooo fucking much like he’s a fucking god smh, he is just a R-A-P-P-E-R lol jeez, yall act like kendrick lamar can never be capable of spitting a weak verse (see A1 Everything, my opinion), you people have waaaaaaaaaay too many high expections for this niqqa, i’m a fan of kendrick but yall are overboard

  44. Dashing says:

    @Baous, Ha You’re obviously joking!

@spaceghoseblacc It’s easy to say people are dick riding and overrating. . And when anybody dope comes along, there will be people to say “you’re dickrding” This is a hip hop blog. So if you aint excited about good hip hop and want to express it here, where are else are you supposed to go?

And think about it. Lil Wayne was “the hottest” in hip hop for years. And he can’t stay on the same subject for more than 4 bars. Why wouldn’t we want the “hottest” rapper to be a MC who can actually write, flow, and tell stories with a message, while also being able to make some shit you can bump in the whip and at the club. Why wouldn’t you root for that to happen to hip hop?

It’s actually really hard to not be impressed with the album that Kendrick created. I think you actually have to just be a hater to not like the album.

    Main reasons:

    1) Lyrical content Not only are they dope, but Kendrick doesn’t try to be “Mr. Punchline” with the ADHD rhymes that people are on these days (i.e. “you know I balled: chemo”. He tells stories.

    2) Flow: This dude just has too many flows. At times he can flow Wayne-ish, sometimes Andre 3000ish, sometimes Pusha T-ish, sometimes Bone Thugs-ish but mostly a flow all of his own. When you have that many styles that you can draw from, you’re a beat

    3) Production: The beats are produced by a ton of producers: Soul, hard knocking beats, Southern smooth shit, hard West Coast Shit but somehow everything seems to fit. That must be Dre’s exec producing.

    4) Few guest features: people always relying on a million features. This has 3 and they each service the track they’re on perfectly. (Jay Rock surprised the fuck out of me with his verse)

    5) Lived up to the hype: How that’s possible I don’t know. There was a lot of hype around the album and it lived up to it.

5 Mic Album. XXL album. Best rap album to come out in years. Purists/underground heads will love it. Old school hip hop heads will love it.

We have a new standard bearer in hip hop.

  45. HAQ says:

@Pharrell: don’t get carried away, fag.

  46. hazz says:

B Dot promotes 360 like he’s nice so ah… And Bob Dylan has a funny voice and hair cut phuck that gotta do with music. I compare Kendrick to Kendrick.

  47. Loyalty says:

I think Kendrick Lamar is dope, I know the concept of GKMC is to tell the journey of his life. I feel like he fell short, it was just to much going on in the songs. I can’t call this a classic because to me a classic is when all or the majority of the songs can stand on its own; In kendrick’s case they can’t. Even though I wasn’t feeling the album on the 22nd I will be at the stores to support him because I just want that real hip hop of lyricist, substance and storytelling back.

  48. Mike Johnson says:

Wayne’s hardest verse since he came out of prison is his verse on HYFR of Drake’s album.
