Classic: sic |ˈklasik| (adjective): Judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind.

“Classic” may be the most overused word in hip-hop. And following the release of Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city, the term’s been ran into the ground. So for the fourth installment of Elliott’s Truth series, he breaks down the anatomy of a timeless album.

  1. CTE WORLD says:

Young Jeezy The recession = CLASSIC

  2. e says:

^^^ couldnt of said it better my self

  3. Derrt says:

I agree neither are classics. They are up for best album of the year along with Food and Liquor 2, and R.A.P Music.

Classic albums can’t have TOO many Features also.

IMO Me “Against the world” is classic album along with the albums Elliot suggested.

  4. SHABOIGAN says:

Amazing and a little scary that we can make these sort of decisions, or judgment calls within the first week of the album’s release.

  5. michelle michelle says:

    Proof of a classic…

On the 10 year anniversary of your album, can you sell out an arena where you perform only that album top to bottom. Reasonable Doubt anniversary concert at the Gardens.

  6. P.Diddy says:

Good kid maad city is TRASH(shyne voice) lupe first album food & liquor isbanclassic. Witu kick push being that stand out track. It undoubtedly impacted the culture. 50 get rich is also undisputed. I think eminem last album recovery is a classic. But that is just my opinion. Life is good was cool. Im sorry i bout gkmc but after 1 listen ibwas not interested in listening again. Its good creatively but the music is just ehhh.

  7. DoleMic says:

I agree w/ YN both are not classics but are dope & LIG>GKMC. Kendrick definitely got the poitential to deliver a classic & I believe he will as he grows.

PLEASE GO COP; GOOD KID mA.A.d CITY & support Hip-Hop

  8. Nathaniel says:

    clas·sic [klas-ik]
    1. judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind.
    2. of the first or highest quality, class, or rank.
    3. serving as a standard, model, or guide.

i’d say it’s too early to tell. i blame The Source, though. those 5 mics of old infested the culture with that “instant classic” stamp. and by elliott’s criteria, Country Grammer and Nellyville may be considered classics. TIME, though… TIME.

furthermore… illmatic in 94 and Reasonable Doubt in 96 were slept on initially. the impact was eh… the stand out records we TBD, but TIME… smh time. the 7 Day Theory is another that initially was shooed over.

but like elliott said… time will either validate or prove him wrong. personally, i think Life is Good made noise when it was released, but next year (even as we speak) niggas are forgetting about that album. WTT will prolly be a classic, though. and of course MBDTF. as for kendrick… the nigga’s album hasn’t even been out a week, son.

  9. @rowjayC.O.B says:

To be honest i think it’s mainly his hardcore fan base who are screaming CLASSIC

I can’t see myself bumping it in 3-4 years

  10. me says:

This is the greatest album of the skinny jeans era

  11. Hip-Hop Fiend says:

@B.Dot You would be the motherfucking nigga to post this. Kendrick succes is REALLY bothering you my nigga. Yes the “CLASSIC” is over used in hip-hop, but GKMC is a great body of work. These are the classics of our time: Illmatic, Resonable Doubt, It Was Written, Ready To Die, Life After Death, Me Against The World, Blueprint, The Black Album, Slim Shady LP, Marshall Mathers LP, The Chronic, Stillmatic, The Score, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, GRODT, The Documentary, Take Care, and GKMC!

  12. Nathaniel says:

i suspect there’s some east coast bias niggas and boombap babies that don’t want a dude this young, from this particular generation, with THIS re-invention and broadening of a hip hop sound, to win.

    they mad.

i’d like to direct RR to Phonte from Little Brother’s tweets about Kendrick’s album last night. i agree with much of what he said. go look.

  13. ZoomZoomDad-Otis says:

Young Jeezy The recession & TM101. This isnt an album but Jeezy’s “Trap Or Die” was a nice warmup to TM101. Whoever came up with that at DEF JAM thank you. Im not bashing Drake but his last 2 albums people hype it up but you dont hear “Drake had two classic albums”.

  14. How Wonderful... says:

What makes a classic album? RZA + MPC and an ASR.

Classic albums come from originality and no pre conceived formula. Thats why Illmatic, Enter the 36 Chambers, Liquid Swords, Cuban Linx and Return to The 36 Chambers (the Dirty Version) still bang until this day. Those albums were done with out record label executives in the producers and artists ear. So many more albums would be good if rappers werent formulating them along the sex, violence and I have more money that you themes. There are so many more things of substance to include in the music.

  15. IamRealTalk (Now That GFID is 2 Times Platinum...My Job is Done! ) ( Now Go Out and Support Kendrick Lamar October 22nd !!! ) says:

CLASSIC ALBUMS IN HIP HOP MEANS =

    NO SKIPPABLE SONG

AKA EVERY SINGLE SONG ON THE ALBUM IS FIRE A

KA EVERY SONG HAS ITS OWN VIBE TIGHT BEAT AND UP TO STANDARD LYRICS

  16. Donn says:

Thank you!! HipHop fans are groupies during album week. Their so caught in the moment they don’t understand that what their feeling now is just a moment until they get another album from their fav. JayZ has been quoted, Some artists have been sampled, etc etc. Kendrick album is nice but there’s a difference because if I say BROKEN GLASS EVERYWHERE!!! You finish that simple lyric from a classic record. If I say IT WAS ALL A DREAM, u can feel Biggies impact. Kendrick isn’t impacting the culture, some ppl don’t even know who he is. Ppl are dressing like Nicki for Halloween, white kids In the suburbs know Biggie, ppl in Africa sing 50 Cent. That’s impact

  17. Lil' Reese says:

The only classics are Common “Be”, Chingy “Power Ballin”, Bow Wow and Omarion “Faceoff”, and Waka Flocka Flame “Flockaveli”

  18. Nathaniel says:

    and it’s 2012, y’all.

we’re officially in a new era. time to start addressing music NOT in comparison, to another time, but as current time dictates. you’re dealing with an entire generation of young people (under 25) who will and can call the classic as they see it. it’s their (our) time. 40+ year olds can’t dictate a time that isn’t their own. they came of age in another time.

a lot of these young people only know american gangster – present day jay-z. and only know nas Untitled to present. and Dr. Dre is just the beats by guy. you gotta really pay attention to that. i like how hip hop has grown up, so… we’re out of the infant stages and it’s mad growing pains. but you know, hip hop doesn’t dictate Black and american culture, Black people dictate hip hop, american, and pop culture. get it straight.

  19. Hip-Hop Fiend says:

I knew Jay-Z’s Blueprint and 50′s GRODT were classic after the first listen on the day the album was released. A listener knows if there are hearing something special or if its something that just hot the moment and will fade away.

  20. Kunta Kente says:

@Nathaniel Your over thinking it. My 9 yr old God son knows every word to Illmatic and Ready To Die. Theres lots of young kids who study the whole history of hip-hop.

  21. DATNIGGA says:

LIFE IS GOOD – NOT CLASSIC

GOOD KID M.A.A.D CITY – CLASSIC

AND YES IM FROM THE FUTURE YA BISH SO IM FUCKING RIGHT. FUCK YOU

  22. Reginald says:

They both classic compared to this shit (you) y’all been posting…

  23. Your mother's "friend" says:

Cosign Donn, the way i see it Hip Hop/rap has been starved of really great music for so long we jump at anything that sounds or looks like that real shit

  24. chase says:

Jay -Z’s reasonable doubt, blueprint and the black album were instant classics from the first time i heard them. you just know man.

  25. Digital millionaire says:

illmatic ,ready to die , 36 chambers, reasonable d, ob4cl ,late registration , marshel mathers lp, the chronic, 2001, blueprint and thug motivation 101 …only classics I know

  26. Digital millionaire says:

    oh and maybe WTT

  27. Citylivin' says:

@Nathaniel & @Hip-Hop Fiend speaking that knowledge…so what if GKMC isn’t a classic(yet)…i’ll tell you what it is tho, a great fucking album..shit is like a movie…..it’s funny how hard people try to disown how good it is just because it’s not a classic…who the fuck cares?

  28. YN you out of your fucking mind saying m.A.A.d City is not a classic album or classic in the making. You’re speaking to soon!

  29. itol says:

    Outkast first 3 albums Classics
Nas illmatic It Was Written Stillmatic
    Jay Z reasonable doubt Blueprint
    ATCQ Midnight Marauders
    Raekwon OB4CL
    BDP Criminal Minded
    EPMD Stricly Business
    Lupe 1st joint
    Dre The Chronic
    There’s so many…

  30. J says:

michelle michelle – that show was at Radio City…not the Garden

  31. J says:

i like rosenberg’s commentary, “it defies the era that it exists in”

all I’ll say is this, if 3stacks dropped GKMC, no one would dispute that it was a classic

  32. J says:

and lastly, why doesn’t Oddisee’s, People Hear What They See, get any love from RR. That was my top album of the year before GKMC dropped

  33. picky says:

Whats funny is that life is good and good kid m.A.A.d city are the only albums I have EVER purchased in my life ..

  34. Nathaniel says:

    @kunte kente

respectfully, your god son is a small sample size, bruh. there are those that study. yes. but if they weren’t alive or aware of their surroundings i.e. 12 and under, damn near, then they still don’t understand the classic quality of say an Aquemini like somebody who was close to an adult age. that’s all i’m saying.

not over thinking. just urging us to be aware of the dictates of the time. it’s still a new era.

  35. Hip-Hop Fiend says:

Fuck the word CLASSIC. I’m looking for that MASTERPIECE. Definition of Masterpiece: A work done of extradinary skill; ESPECIALLY: A supreme intellectual or artisic achivement

  36. Hip-Hop Fiend says:

If that don’t describe GKMC I don’t know what does…

  37. People Actully Spent Money On Tha Carter IV says:

I don’t know about a classic but can we all agree that GKMC was 10X better than Cole World: The Sideline Story

  38. Realshyt says:

I think there’s classics in the mainstream world
And classics in the unground world
I do think GKMC is underground classic Elliot mentions a classic album having a monster track but mos def&talib kweli black star album is classic and they don’t have a “monster track” on that album. Listen y’all classic is in your preference to be honest..I think carter 2 is a classic and people might disagree but I digg it& I think F&L 1 was the last classic album that came out In my time.

  39. Dashing says:

Life is Good was tight. But I’m sorry guys it had “Summer on Smash” which was just aight and really out of place, the Mary J Joint, re-using that sample that’s been used 100 times without any originality to it. Those 2 songs are just aight.

Aint nothing just “aight” on the Kendrick album. While it’s true that some albums take time to judge (i.e. Reasonable Doubt was not deemed “classic” at the time but now it’s considered one of the best rap albums of all time) others don’t take that long. We all knew that Blueprint (despite the wackest song on there”Jigga that Nigga Jigga” was a classic immediately. The same can be said for MBDTF(despite “Hell of a Life” which is it’s wackest track).

The Kendrick album has no skippable tracks, the narrative is sick, the message is awesome, the lyricism is fantastic and it’s still so dense that after more listens people will only get more and more out of it. Meaning it’s only going to get BETTER with time.

There’s 2 things that happen when a great album comes out. Some people go overboard with their praising. But then some people go overboard with their criticism of the people that are praising it.

Shouldn’t the fact that people have been going absolutely crazy over this album like nothing that’s come out in a LOOOOONG time be enough to dictate that it’s a classic?

  40. B.Dot says:

The Kendrick album has no skippable tracks…
    ^
    O_o

  41. Rfoster says:

If you don’t own the Real CD don’t say it’s a clasic. You will buy multiple copies of a classic album without blinking.

    Illamatic
    Chronic
    GRODT
    The Blueprint
    The Black Album
    WTT
    Marshall Mathers LP
    The Score
    Miseducation of Lauren Hill
… wait a sec nobody mentioned any Wayne Albums on the entire thread, hmmm why is that

And Em’s last record was beyond anything ever really recorded from a technicall standpoint… it was murder

And I dare say that Kanye West has NEVER made a subpar album.
College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, MBDTF, (808′s on a sad day)
    Yeezy is undefeated out here

  42. Attaboy says:

Life is good is a Classic and untouchable album… That’s the truth ruth

  43. DAMAN says:

nigga said GKMC doesnt have skippable tracks u must be on Interscope payroll lool that album is trash and cannot be compared to Nas album

  44. Mga-Czar says:

LIG had one song that was so horribly out of place ” summer on smash ” and was pure trash ….. GKMC had two skip-able tracks in ” backseat freestyle ‘ and the simp assisted ” poetic justice ” which was full of bath and body works due to Mr. Cucumber Melon himself Drake …. all in all both are stand out albums and both are worthy to be deemed classics for two different reasons ….. GKMC cause of the well put together story line and overall cohesiveness and vibe throughout the entire album … LIG cause of replay value, top notch production (on an nas album) and for being in the game 20 yrs and to show up in some of the best lyrical shape of his life is outstanding ….. LIG(9.3) > GKMC (9.0) both worthy to be called classic

  45. Donn says:

This conversation will never have a conclusion but I guess it’s healthy

  46. JReezy says:

Lol @ Hip-Hop Fiend listing Take Care as a classic album.

Like Dashing said, GKMC has no skippable tracks in my opinion. That’s a pretty incredible feat, and Kendrick was able to pull it off because of how the album is structured. Since the album does a great job of telling this story of a dude growing up in Compton I find it pretty easy to listen to it all the way through without skipping a single song.

  47. Stoner Logic says:

@kunte kente your 9 year old knows illmatic, stop lying lmao

Tbh I don’t give a fuckkk if an album is classic or not, if its dope then its dope, if it’s not it’s not, hip-hop fans always overanalyze the music smh, it’s music niqqas damn, stop getting so emotional over music smh

  48. GKMC = Classic. Dead With It 90's Heads says:

Leave it to old 90’s and 80’s heads to once again downplay a terrific new project because it’s not “ILLmatic”-ish enough to be regarded as a classic. A Classic should be a well executed project that is one of its kind. GKMC is, ya bish. I was a teen in the 00’s so please old heads, tell me how OB4CL, IWW and Reasonable Doubt were “one of a kind” “masterpieces” although all three albums ran with the same “Mafioso” style? I don’t understand how “Impact” factor into those albums, when that style of rap was already a trend. Nobody has made an album like GKMC, and it clearly stands out from the rest of the projects released this year.
It’s obvious there’s a huge generation gap that’s playing out in this debate, ya bish. 90’s heads are crying “Time will tell” but it didn’t take long for RTD to be regarded as a classic. Oh yeah, I know why – cause Biggie died and that amplified this catalogs value. 90’s Heads can’t say that Biggies death wasn’t the greatest thing to happen in his career. I can’t stand 90’s heads.
