’12 Best Mixtapes: #2 Big Sean Detroit

detroit-cover

Following the success of his Cruel Summer hits (“Mercy”, “Clique”) as well as Meek Mill’s “Burn”, Big Sean cordially invited fans to his hometown with his fourth mixtape, Detroit. The Motor City’s new shining star travels down the road to stardom on the opener “Higher” and depicts his lavish lifestyle over the soulful sounds of Barry White on “How I Feel”. Right on! Sean Don keeps the celebratory tracks intact (“Experimental”, “FFOE”, “Woke Up”) while stacking more than enough bread with French Montana on “Mula”. Things aren’t all boastful though as Big displays his vulnerability and lyrical growth alongside fellow rhyme slingers like Royce Da 5’9″ and Kendrick Lamar (“100”) and J.Cole (“24 Karats Of Gold”). Cohesive and conceptual with skits from Common, Young Jeezy, and Snoop Lion, Detroit feels like a Def Jam album. Take your time with Hall Of Fame cause this collection was heaven sent. Oh God!

  2. Steve says:

This project was the total package indeed. Got more downloads than Dedication 4. “How It Feel” was such a smooth record. And im guessing Rich Forever is number one?

  3. Stunna says:

    so no It’s Tha World……………………

  4. Get Real says:

#OhGawd This tape IS an album. Lol. Rich Forever is and should be no.1 b/c it set the bar for every tape in 2012 w/ it’s late Dec’11 release. Say what you want about YN, Ross, &/or MMG but Rich Forever is a must have in the collection.

  5. Fuck rap radar says:

This should be #1. You guys are smoking rocks.

  6. Stop dickriding says:

I think this and HITstory are this past year’s best

  7. Sippin' Simon says:

This was a great mixtape but definitely not #2. #BFK was better than this. So was 4evaNDay

  8. VDUB says:

Number 2? really? Y’all got this all wrong man. This should’ve been number 1.

  9. realfan says:

this was a horrible mixtape, besides 24k of gold, higher and maybe mula the rest of the tape is a huge drop off for big sean, considering it took him 2 yrs to release it after pushing it back multiple times. im looking for a good big sean album man, and how about cold corner 2. Banks on pt. that should be number 1

  10. realfan says:

  16. trae says:

mixtape was better than his last album for sure. Detroit is solid

  17. @ Dashing says:

Better than Joey Badass mixtape though?

This site is weak as fuck nowadays, I respect the dudes YN and Bdot but their taste in music is like an average hiphop head when everyone knows (suspects) that they’re real hiphop heads.

Big Seans tape was top 5, and Ross is #1 but a lot of albums and mixtapes that were discussed amongst the ones with the deepest love for this shit all year were not even mentioned.

  18. Benja says:

Sean definitely went in on “Detroit”! Had everything that we could expect, we chose to highlight it too!

Let me know what you think and leave a comment! Got some overlaps with RR and some other new ones. Naming 10 best is impossible but we are trying to throw some shine on projects that we thought were great from 2012.

  19. Jaymalls says:

Should be #1 IMO but i aimt mad at Ross taking it!
