Drake: #5 Hottest MC In The Game

Tuesday, March 05 2013 9:25 AM EST | Posted by: Big Homie | Posted in: Blog, Focus

Started from the bottom, Aubrey Graham’s guest verses lands him at #5 on MTV‘s Hottest MCs list.

As MTV News’ Senior Hip-Hop Writer Rob Markman said, Drake dominated rap features all year long, and that was underscored when you realized that every artist on his lineup had at least one big collab to perform with him on the cross-country jaunt. “He strategically had features with people he was going on tour with — so it was Waka with ‘Round of Applause,’ 2 Chainz with ‘No Lie,’ A$AP with ‘F—in’ Problems’ and Kendrick with ‘Poetic Justice,’ ” Markman explained. “Anything he touches is a guaranteed smash.”

  8. X says:

Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Jay Z, Rick Ross and Macklemore (not a fan, but he’s clearly “hotter” than Meek Mill…)

And 2 of them won’t fit… I feel like maybe MTV did worse than usual this year.

  9. DMVinyourchick says:

Wtf I woulda expected drake to be higher on the list, I think this is gonna be interesting I don’t see jigga or cole makin the list them niggaz been silent, I am interested to see what they do with wale he put in mad work this year ,I already know kendrixk got number 1

  10. klqrence says:

well done kendrick, #1 for sure and it’s deserved

  11. X says:

Shit, we’re on 5 already? So the three of them won’t fit…

  12. Chris says:

Drake should be #1. Look at the amount of hits he was a part of for 2012. Crazy.

  13. damone says:

I still don’t get the Kendrick Loveday.. No hate but can someone please explain?

  14. lolQ says:

    it was expected.

    Kendrick had the best year.

  15. Ent says:

    @ damone

What’s to get? He had the best year. Just the way it is.

  16. Kimberly King says:

    kendrick lamar

    - Best selling debut for a male artist
    - big sales numbers
    - msot acclaimed album since 2010, 25th most acclaimed album of all time, all genre
    - called he king of hip hop by the industry ( hip hop heads, journalists, sites/magazines, fans, celebrities)
    - most asked artsit for a featuring (even pop super stars > emeli sandé, lady gaga, Dido, etc)
    - his album is praised as fuck, called the only UNCOMPROMISED master piece in the history of hip hop that had success, his album proved that you don’t need to go pop to be successful (MTV,billboard, XLL, The Source etc)
    - craziest increase of popularity he is headlining the biggest festivals in Europe and covering european newspapers with the name ” king of hip hop”

    still don’t understand ?

  17. Dashing says:

Wow. I’m stunned that he’s this high. Woulda thought he’d be #2 or #1. Damn. So that leaves 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Kendrick and who else? I can’t think that Wayne would be higher than Drake. Maybe Nas will surprisingly make the list. His album was damn near classic…

  18. Tbones says:

“Kimberly King,Bitch get off Kendric nuts, 70 percent of ur post is false n mere fantasies. Having said that the no 1 spot should be between Nas and Kendric.

  19. R Jon says:

Kendrick #1, yeahhh 2012 was your year new king of hip hop

  20. Toy-T says:

    Curren$y in 2012 only:

    Muscle car chronicles (album)
    The stoned immaculate (album)
    Here…(ep)
    Jet world order 2 (compilation)
    #the1st28 (ep)
Cigarette Boats (xxl ep of the year)
    Priest Andretti (Mixtape)
    3 piece set (ep)

How does someone this consistent not be mentioned…

  21. Pop123 says:

I knew kendrick was going to win, he had a brilliant year.

  22. B.Dot says:

@Toy-T outside of the ‘net, Spitta is kind unknown and has little impact. Everyone on the list so far has legitimate Billboard hits. Prolific doesn’t mean Hot

  23. london says:

well ..who´s gonna be number one?the fat fraud?

where the fuck did you kendrick groupies came from? damn

  24. Killaz says:

congrats kendrick, you really deserve #1 spot

  25. bEezze says:

Drake sux, no way he can be in the same category as kendrick

King kendrick #1 as expected, he already has the status of King of hip hop ( given by the industry + hip hop stars)

  26. NoName says:

so, the artist with the most acclaimed album, the one who won Lyricist of the year, the one that hip hop heads crowned KING of west coast, the one that… KENDRICK GONNA WIN :D

    proud of him

  27. spqWny says:

gkmc is considered as the new illmatic according to the journalists and reviews, ofc he was going to win, idiots.

  28. Julie says:

Kendrick is a little bit over-hyped but he deserves it.

this kind of hype happens 2x in a decade and only for potential goats

  29. LA says:

    Drake should be number #1.
    Most anticipated.

  30. liu says:

kendrick is the savior of hip hop, according to XXL, The Source, Hip hop dx, etc but also according to MTV > Kendrick Lamar: 2012′s Biggest Newcomer Snuck Up On Us – Music, Celebrity, Artist News | MTV.com

isn’t a surprised to see the new best rapper of the moment being #1 tbh

  31. Mikey says:

WOW, the only mc that was hotter than Drake this year was Kendrick…….it’ll be interesting to see what undeserving people get those other 3 spots, and if Drake is 5 Im thinking Cole will get overlooked……AGAIN

  32. the Chef says:

mtv did a good job, would have been the biggest mistake of the century if kendrick wasn’t on top of the list.

  33. tucq says:

Too low. Drake should be #1…..only Wayne can match him in sales. Drake will hit 800,000 plus on this next album.

  34. Buggin In says:

Damn kendrick had the same hype than 50 and Eminem in 2000 & 2003.

rly cool to see him there

  35. troumAns says:

Kendrick Lamar with a 1000000th WIN

That’s why this album is fantastic, it’s very cohesive and it’s all about Kendrick’s previous life.
From the production/artists to the story, everything is about his life, big props to kendrick for that and the man has one of the most successful uncompromised albums in recent years.

Hopefully this and other releases that do not compromise or water-down will prove that ‘aiming’ at a demographic is senseless and pleases nobody. The people you’re trying to ‘trick’ into liking the music won’t really like it anyway as it’s half rap / hardcore or, and why would you want people who don’t really like what YOU do listening to you anyway :confusion: – and then the fans who actually do like what YOU do will just be disappointed. It’s good for nothing and is a cheap tactic.

    for more honest releases.

  36. FirBeg@rapfrom says:

couldn’t see anybody else than Kendrick at #1.

Kendrick is like the best rapper right now and he had the biggest hype in 2012. it’s legitimate

  37. Da Business says:

Drake ain’t fucking w/ Kendrick lyrically but, he definitely had a bigger yr than him. I SWEAR, MTV is on some bs…

So, u’re telling me that 2chains, Ross, French had a bigger yr than Drake??? FOH, Kendrick is the only exception and to be frank, Drake still had a better yr than even him…

  38. Real says:

great to see kendrick with a possible #1

  39. Kimberly King says:

lol 2012 was KENDRICK YEAR. cemented.

    - Best selling debut for a male artist
    - big sales numbers
    - most acclaimed album since 2010, 25th most acclaimed album of all time, all genre
    - called the king of hip hop by the industry ( hip hop heads, journalists, sites/magazines, fans, celebrities)
    - most asked artsit for a featuring (even pop super stars > emeli sandé, lady gaga, Dido, etc)

    - craziest increase of popularity he is headlining the biggest festivals in Europe and covering european newspapers with the name ” king of hip hop”

  40. MMGf says:

Kendrick dominated 2012 just like pac dominated in the 90′s

  41. Jo says:

yep, kendrick = craziest increease of popularity, all genre

  42. dmc says:

I really hope this dies next year.

  43. Hybrid says:

i’m a fan of drake but I couldn’t see him being at the first spot this year.
    Kendrick was too big

  44. Dashing says:

I’m happy that Kendrick will likely be #1 here, but these MTV lists just aren’t consistent. If you’re talking about hottest, how is Big Sean hotter than Kanye? The only reason Big Sean is hot is because Kanye put him on 2 big records with a lot of big names.

And then if we’re going off of who’s being talked about and who’s on the charts and who consistently is making hits, Drake has to be number 1 for right this second. AS much as I prefer and like Kendrick adding him to your track does not make it a hit record ( just ask Dido). Kendrick should have been #1 4 or 5 months ago right after the album dropped, but now Drake has the most buzz, the most talked about single, just won a Grammy, created buzz for Lil Wayne with only a few lines on his single, gave A$AP Rocky a hit record, got French Montana 2 big records on the radio….the list goes on. And this is in a year when he didn’t even drop an album.

If the list is about best, then Kendrick should be #1, but if it’s about hottest right this second, it should be Drake.

  45. Da Business says:

Yo, I fux w/ Kendrick, GKMC is a breath of fresh air but, this dick riding is starting to get ridiculous…

Let’s have some perspective folks, outside of lyrical content, if u keep it 100 w/ urself, Drake kills K.Dot in every other category. U can’t sit here and tell me that Kendrick had a bigger yr than Drake, u’re delusional if u truly believe that…

Don’t get it twisted, I fux w/ the whole TDE movement(s/o to Schoolboy Q), let’s keep it real tho. In the game right now, there’s Drake and then everybody else… Cole, Kendrick, Sean, etc…

  46. Da44avis says:

Kendrick’s year was fantastic, it will be remembered.

  47. haiki says:

“Impact, lyrics, sales, buzz, style and the intangibles all factor in to the upcoming ‘Hottest MCs in the Game VIII’ debate.”

    > the definition of kendrick Lamar

Nas is still my favorit erapper but he won’t make the list tbh.
Props to Kendrick, he is bringing real hip hop back too

  48. Stone says:

    50 cent #3… 2 chains#2….Kendrick#1….

  49. thisishiphop@rapfrom says:

    1. kendrick
    2. ross

  50. Facts says:

    @ Da Business

Drake is not a MC though rather is he a singer who used to roll around in a wheel chair in ordner to gain attention
