YN Editorial: Funk Flex Mixtape

funkflexfront

56 songs? 3.4 hours? Funk Flex’s new mixtape is a lot to digest. But the new App King’s star-studded release deserves to be reviewed so who better to do it than the GOAT himself? Here’s my track by track breakdown of what the Hot 97 Pitbull brought us. No easy task.

funkflexback1

Loopy Blogger NYC “Intro”
Funk is so digital that he begins his mixtape with a blogger poppin shit. Dude’s steez is a lil too Pain In Da Ass for me.
No Bombs.

The Lox “Who You Mad At?”
We’ll probably never get a group album from the Yonkers crew but this hardbody heater reminds us why we still want one. Yo, where’s my hoodie?
Bombs!

Fabolous “Money Talks”
Loso keeps the classic NYC vibe goin’. What year is this? Dude from Brook-lyn still goes hard.
Bombs!

Vado Ft. Ace Hood, DJ Khaled, Meek Mill, & French Montana “Don’t Make Me Do It”
We The Best and friends bounce all over Jahlil Beats production. Powerful posse cut.
Bombs!

A$AP Rocky x A$AP Ferg “Max Julien”
This sounds like an old leftover from the Harlem boys. The screws and chop don’t pop enough.
No Bombs.

Action Bronson “Live From Kissena Blvd”
Queens stand up! Statik’s soundtrack is stupendous and Bronson blacks out. Harder than pavement.
Bombs!

Slaughterhouse “House Gang”
Flex loves Da Slaughter and they always deliver for the Kingpin. Long and strong. Soft MCs, bow down.
Bombs!

Wale “Til The Sun Up”
Folarin can flow but this is far from his shining moment.
No Bombs.

Uncle Murda “Do Sumthin”
The most talked about tune on the tape holds no punches and pulls a lot of cards. I’m glad I stay on Murda’s good side.
Bombs!

Jadakiss & Styles P “In and Out”
More ruggedness from Up North as 2/3rd of the LOX flaunt their lyrical tag team style.
Bombs!

J.Cole “Maine On Fire”
Lightskinned Jermaine teased this at a live show awhile back. The live Raphael Saadiq sample is top choice. I told ya, Ty Kidd. Ha!
Bombs!

Busta Rhymes Ft. Trey Songz & Future “Shake It”
Damn I ain’t been to the strip club in a long-ass time. Close my eyes and Bussa-Bus and the crew take me there. Thanks!
Bombs!

Childish Gambino “Think Of Me”
Look at the Funkster showin love to the new generation and Glover shows and proves. Good looks!
Bombs!

Cam’ron x Lil Wayne “Love To A Diplomat”
Another one that sounds like it was rescued from the cutting room floor. I don’t care for this one.
No Bombs.

Troy Ave “Perfect Love”
I don’t know who producers Buda Da Future & Grandz Muzik are but their soulful track overrides Troy’s bars.
No Bombs.

Maino “The Fact That I’m Me”
The Main Source sample echoes the theme of the mixtape as Maino and his Mafia mob. But there’s too much goin on in Harry Fraud’s mix.
No Bombs.

French Montana Ft. Chinx Drugz & Cheeze “Shit We On”
More soul samples play the back as the Coke Boyz do their usual one-two thing. Nothing special here.
No Bombs.

Lloyd Banks “Get Involved”
This Blue Hefner tune ain’t booty but it don’t move me. Hook doesn’t draw you in.
No Bombs.

Joell Ortiz “Roll Deep”
Anchored by M.O.P. and Big Pun vocal samples, the Boriqua bodies another one. Death to the wack MCs.
Bombs!

Mac Miller “Salamander”
This might be the sleeper as Mac’s mental exercise is enticing and excellent. Please Mr. Miller, don’t hurt ’em.
Bombs!

Chris Webby “Conan”
White MCs back to back? Webby ain’t wack but this joint ain’t cracking. Still it’s always peace Connecticut.
No Bombs.

Smoke DZA “Niggaz 4 Life”
Legendary producer Pete Rock provides the potent track and the Kushed God pays homage to N.W.A.
Bombs!

Joey Bada$$ x Nyck Caution “Hot Box”
Another case of an artist not submitting their best. This jawn is lukewarm. Turn it down.
No Bombs.

Jae Millz x Lil Wayne “Buy This Buy That”
Good to hear the homie Millz with his YMCMB Boss but this one doesn’t deserve our dough or attention.
No Bombs.

J-Doe x Meek Mill “The Latest”
The Conglomerate and MMG come together and the results are… alright. This is not the best these crews have to offer.
No Bombs.

Reek Da Villian x Vado “I Came”
Back to the NY boom bap, Busta’s protege and Cam’ron’s former one once again show us how the East Coast rocks.
Bombs!

Emilio Rojas “Pray”
UFO is a popular breakbeat—and it still is. I wish this one was better.
No Bombs.

Young Pretty Ft. French Montana & Chinx Drugz “It’s The Syndrome (Remix)”
French brings life to classics but even he can’t save this one. This should’ve stayed gone.
No Bombs.

Bodega Bamz x A$AP Ferg “Trap Lords’
Nah.
No Bombs.

Disc 2 Tmw!

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY?

How is that Joey song wack. I’m not some crazy Pro Era fanboy talking here either… But that track was an absolute standout. Joey’s offbeat flow is phenomenal.. That beat is so damn grimy and gritty and his wordplay and delivery are out of this world…

I see people hating on Joey here all the time thinking he’s just some wannabe Nas copy or some shit. He’s just 18 and look where he already is. A legend in the making.

    You’ll see….
