Ellen Grossman Reviews Jay-Z Album

Hey, it’s the old lady from the train again! Last fall, Ellen Grossman met Jay-Z on the R line en route to the Barclays Center. She was recently invited to the MTV offices to break down his latest set, Magna Carta Holy Grail.

“It sounds like he’s really going deep into his heart and into fatherhood and even the meaning of fame. “[He’s saying] that the money’s nice, but there’s life beyond that, that he’s exploring. I picked that up from the papers but I felt it in the man too, when I met him. That he had a depth to him.”

That’s what I was. . . . Trying to take away from the album and, at times got that feeling but, I can’t lie, as I much as I do enjoy “Magna Carta Holy Grail”, I wish the Duality part he talked about could of been added more into the verses.

It seems as if he was just talking about all his Money and Possessions he had. Which is cool that is how Jay has been rapping since “Watch the Throne” but, I just needed more balance of what he is searching for, and what he hopes to find in the process. Overall tho as I said it was a Good project.

  8. more tracks like Jay_Z Blue were wanted from myself, though lyrically he stepped it up.. wasn’t RD Jay, but it was way better than BP3 and WTT Jay… solid album, more focused as far as the music was concerned.

  12. bumpy johnson says:

comin from a rapper who is 43yrs old ……… this album was real dope ….. and I mean dope ..

  13. nbjkvwn says:

The album sucks. RR still trying to do promo for Jay by showing this insignificant crap. You guys are Jay-z Stans.

  14. Normal says:

Do people even understand what Jay-Z says in his raps. Are human beings that ignorant, vile, and crude that all they can say is the music sucks, insignificant, and “wack.” Jay-Z is on his way to a billion dollars and tells you that doesn’t mean shit because he’s still a BLACK MAN FROM MARCY PROJECTS. If your a black male you have absolutely no reason to hate on this. Oceans is about how we were brought over in slavery and now look at how we thrive. Don’t let the white stans make you believe Jay is wack or inferior when they know the truth. We’re kings. And when we actually try to do positive things in life somehow us black people do it so effortlessly. WAKE UP. Listen to his stories. Dissect them. Rap genius them if you need to. But understand his music. From the meaning of Reasonable Doubt to Holy grail. Understand what Jay represents and where he’s trying to go. it’s not just about money either.

  15. Evil says:

The album is average at best.
The production saves Jay Z,if the Production wasnt as good as it is,this album would have been forgotten about already

  16. peep says:

Album is dope point blank period. That track he got with beyonce will be a #1 hit on the R&B/hip hop charts. Hov wins again. fuck it.

  17. tucq says:

I think it’s an okay album. It has some coo tracks, but if somebody is sayin it’s a “classic” then I can’t go along with that. That’s just goin too far.

  18. CAlejo says:

For the way music is right now this is probably the top album of 2013 for now for hip hop just gotta wait for drake and em if he is dropping anything.

  19. The Wise says:

Already kanyes album is forgot about lmao an j.cole ..jayz made a good set up to built anticipation for the album..but over this album is ok really not that great sum beats are cool but then they switch up an then sum of his verses are jus not complex an jus feel lazy .but jayz groupies will swallow it up an hail him but realisticly there only a small portion of good songs majority werent good

  20. Yeaaahhh says:

    @ Normal.. Agreed

Oceans is a very profound track.. If you have the mental capacity to interpret it properly…

  26. King HOV says:

Listen man, I give Ellen Gross man her due respect but do I take her opinion and run with it? Fuck no. She doesnt and couldn’t possible understand the depths at which this man operates. Every single track it wrought with enormous depths; so much that you’d have to “rapgenius” every verse from every single track and what’s more is I’m not dick riding. Jay-Z is and always will be a stellar artist, consummate business man, and door opener for people beneath him, and let’s be real, EVERYBODY rapping is beneath him. Shit, most businessmen with wealth that exceeds Jay even look to him for advice. Man, that stands for something… How, as fans of hip hop, can we hate on this man? I can’t understand it. 1 million albums sold before he even finished the record, RIAA had to rewrite it rules, New York city replaced Franks Sinatras “New York, New York” with “Empire State of MInd”, 13 #1 albums… Come on. I don’t see what’s to hate about.
