Mac Miller is signed 2 Rostrum/Fontana. Fontana is owned by the largest label in the world UMG. UMG provides all back office $upport for Fontana so Fontana = “independent” “independent” = Major
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have been signed to The Agency Group which is a high powered booking & management company for I believe two years. Their album is through ADA which is owned by the 3rd biggest Major Warner Bros. Warner provides back office $upport for ADA therefore they too are “independent”

Fontana was 100% owned by the world’s largest record company UMG who recently sold a portion to Isolation Network/INGrooves which is also a company that UMG owns a real healthy percentage of. UMG provides back office $upport for Fontana/INGrooves who then provide back office support for artists/companies that have a big large budget & buzz (sometimes budget is all that’s needed). This is the majors way of getting apiece of the Independent scene too with hopes of being able to spot the talent 1st, negotiate a deal that is real nice for the artists then upstream them to the bigger brand/label. So Fontana = “independent” = Major Though Rostrum isn’t a major they are super caked up from Wiz.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis got signed I believe two (2) years ago to The Agency Group which is a HIGH powered booking/managment firm who made it a top priority to make him shine as bright as possible. Then for the album they hooked up with ADA which is owned by Warner Bros who are the 3rd largest label after Sony Music. Warner provides back office support for ADA who then provide back office support for indie artists/companies.

Plus it’s very different putting a female rapper on then it is for males. It’s much harder. But Kreay aint dead yet, all it takes is one hit, and it doesn’t necessarily have to come from your first album.
macklemore’s strength is in his live show. same as mac and wiz. the major labels influence you see is getting them into mid size venues and festivals and letting them rock out and appear indie. the majors do the right thing in not showing their ass, but reap the rewards by taking a cut of the back end. still, the word of mouth of macklemore doing a string of college shows will build him a heavy fan base, merch, cd & itunes sales post-performance, and allow him to eat well for a very long time without ever having a video be shown on a conventional medium. bravo.

Macklemore album is different with original beats. He’s not sampling and he doesn’t have the same crew of rappers singing about the same damn thing. His album is damn good. Thrift Shop did what it was supposed to do- draw attention to the album and it has by the numbers below:

The reason this song went 6x platinum is because he isnt signed to label that pays to have this song played on the radio a million times a day. So people hear it and feel the need to download it cause they’re not sure when they’ll hear it again. Unlike the latest lil wayne/drake/rick ross track that you can hear almost anytime you flip on the radio
