Over the last several days, videos of Justin Bieber saying the N-Word hit the ‘net. The singer has since apologized, but not everyone has been accepting. In an interview with MTV, Lupe Fiasco said Bieber’s rhetoric was worse than Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling. Conversely, YMCMB has shown their support for The Biebs. Says Mack Maine
“Bieber does not have a slave mentality. He treats his people with respect. [He] legitimately adopted the culture of the hip-hop, African-American culture. I remember telling a white man, Chinese man, Black man joke as a kid that was terrible and I told it to my friends because I thought they’d think it was funny,”

Black culture is new to Canada, in general. That’s worth talking about to.
And most places in Canada are inhabited by white trash, pickup truck driving hicks. It’s like the south up there.
The Caribbean culture of Toronto, Vince Carter, Kardinal Offishall, K-os…those just came around in the past 15 years or so. They paved the lane for OVO and Andrew Wiggins being the best player in the world.
But Canadian culture is also something people are ignoring in this conversation.

No. Black culture is not new to Canada. The Caribbean culture of TO came around in the past 15 years? Ummm, no. Caribana is the largest street festival in North America, one of the first Caribbean Carnivals held outside of the caribbean and it started in 1967. Black people in TO are waaaayyyy more in touch with Caribbean culture than Americans – even our white mayor can speak patois. But where Justin comes from is hick town. Canada is the world’s second largest country so really can’t speak about the whole country like that.
Good post. The Caribbean Carnival has certainly been around longer. I just think as it grew, it definitely become more greatly ingrained in the culture of the city.
Do you not think that Bieber grew up in Canada has any part of the conversation here? Even in the past 6 or 7 years since that video was made, I feel like black culture has seen a much bigger role in canadian culture overall. Which is even more reason why he’s accountable. He knew he was being video taped so he said it and knowingly know it was taped. We dont know if Justin effected lives or not? Im sure Justin has worked with hundreds of black people and has a couple million fans that are black that gotta see these videos of him making “jokes”. I dont think this a joke because jokes for the most part have an intellectual ceiling. Meaning if the joke is too offensive (and especially if the person saying it is being video taped knowingly) then the joke is not said. This was intentional and this is the true feelings of Justin coming out.
