Nas Responds To Your Old Droog Theories

Who Me?

When Brooklyn upstart Your Old Droog released his EP a few months ago, many speculated that it was actually Nas. During a press conference for Esco’s documentary Time Is Illmatic, Esco deaded the rumors. A secret EP? He doesn’t even know what that means. Cop tickets to his ‘Time Is Illmatic’ tour here.

  2. cmonhomiewemajor says:

i told you idiots..Nas has childsupport to pay, why the fuck would he make a “secret EP”

  3. hm says:

I knew Nas wasn’t Your Old Droog. They’re just voice similarities, and this just reminds me of that time when people thought Action Bronson was secretly Ghostface Killah.

  4. Megamind says:

MY OPINION…i’m not feeling YOD…don’t get me wrong,,,he can rap and he’s DEAD nice…however…he bit Nas whole style which is unforgivable to me. Nas is one of like 10-15 rappers in the history of the genre that doesn’t sound like anyone else. He’s a student of Rakim, Shan and BDK…but he NEVER sounded like them. This YOD cat…bit Nas down to the couplets in how he rhymes, cadence, refrains and ad-libs…that shit is wack to me B! It’s like Ghost said…”Get Your Own shit and be original”…I don’t fk with Bronson wack ass either.

I’m not antiquated but blatant biting is a no-no for me…Kendrick is a derivative of 3k and Nas…but he still has his own style within that mix. Say what you want abt Drake…he’s influence by Jay and Weezy…but he’s original in his shit…Most of today is fly-by shit…some enjoyable, most forgettable beyond a good track, here and there.

    Megamind out

Respect your opinion and agree with most of what you said. That being said I think there is space for Droog to exist if he wanted to keep putting out music. The more I listened to him the less he sounded like Nas. I listened to that ep for a week or so when it first dropped. It felt good like hiphop should. I wasn’t appalled like a lot of Nas fans were.

Oh and Bronson ain’t bad either. Again the more I listened the less he sounded like Ghost. Now he sounds nothing like him to me. To each his own though.

      1. smoss44 says:

your mind playing tricks on you homie. How you go from feeling one way… then being brainwashed by listening to cats over and over then feeling another way… you niggas easily led. Go wit ya first feeling. drog sound like nas (bit nas) and wackson bronson sound just like ghost (bit the ghost) fuck ya other after feelings that’s some hoe shit. switchin up. stick to it. homie said it best. a NO NO for me too no other way around it

        1. William Witherz says:

Basically you never change your mind about anything because that’s some hoe shit. Got it. Thanks, now I know how to live my life.

your welcome fuck nigga. don’t be in here giving niggas passes that’s what fucked the game up now. it’s cool to like dudes music just keep it real. he clearly bit nas

          3. William Witherz says:

Nah what fucked up the game is wack ass rappers like Bobby Schmwhatever the fuck and Rae Sremmepdjsjg, non-lyrical dope boys like French Montfagna, new coons like Trinidad Lames, androgenous semihomo crackbabies like Young Plug, the fans and corporations that support them, and disrespectful little fucks like you that can’t comment without trying to talk big on the internet. I remember ethugs back in the 90’s as a yougn on America Online.
Learn to respect your elders… that’s what’s fucked up with hiphop and with a lot of black folks period.
I never said he didn’t bite Nas.

          4. GetReal says:

nigga shut the fuck up, trying to sound like you know something shut your dumb ass up

          5. smoss44 says:

suck my dick you full blow faggot who asked you ya weak ass hater opinion. you mad you couldn’t say my words nigga

      2. Southside Slick says:

Hi Domingo! We know this is you.. How much are you making for cosigning Your Old Droog? I thought you didnt dick ride anybody but Big Pun (R.I.P.) By the way when are you gonna pay Alchemist all the money you made using his name?? Isnt that the reason why Alchemist dont fuck with you?

    2. ... says:

      Leave BRONSON OUT OF THIS!!!!!!!!

    3. LP1087 says:

Drake is influence by Jay and Weezy ?……well i guess, should of led w/ Ya tho. That’s Yeezy son

    4. M.A.T. says:

I mean it’s one thing to be influenced by someone that you listen to and then there’s just straight up copying. I just checked the music out and not only does his voice sound like Nas but he’s using similar words and flows. Like he’s not even trying to not sound like Nas. He sounds like he’s impersonating him. Almost every word he says, I’ve heard from a Nas record and the only reason I noticed it was because he’s saying it the exact same way Nas does.

I might could over look his voice sounding similar to Nas if he wasn’t going out of his way to sound exactly like him. If you know your voice sounds this much like Nas, the last thing you wanna do is say the same words as him. It’s so noticeable and obvious that there’s no way you can tell me that this is not biting. Dude should be denounced for this shit. Period.

At no point did I feel like his music told me who he was either. One of the biggest ways to separate yourself from other artists is by telling us your story and who you are. What the hell is his story? Who is he? Other than the fact that I like Nas and he’s one of the best, and this guy’s voice sound just like him, why should I care?

The sad thing is that he’s doing this and we’re even talking about him. Meanwhile there’s artist who are original and could really use a website like this to get their name out there.

      1. Megamind says:

Word! That’s exactly what I took from his music as well. I listened to it a couple times. And must say I was thoroughly impressed. The more I started hearing this was Nas…etc…I was excited that he would go back to the essence of his flow/beats..BUT AS SOON as I found out duke was an impersonator…all bets were off. As talented as he may be…get your own style…and i totally agree with your other point…WHO ARE YOU? What’s your story?? Don’t leave an air of mystique to where people would confuse you for someone you’re not….It was a buzz tactic…it worked to a degree…but I’m not that thirst to listen to a dope carbon copy…when i can listen to Illmatic, Life Is Good, It Was Written, Lost Tapes, Stillmatic, ETC!! LOL

          http://genius.com/discussions/86583-Your-old-droog-nas

Exactly! There’s people who genuinely think that it’s Nas, because at no point does he try to make it clear who he is. At any point he could say his name, but guess what, he doesn’t. After listening closely, his voice is a little bit deeper, and his verses seem to be all over the place. Probably because he’s too busy looking at Nas lyrics for words rather than writing a verse with his own thoughts.

youre the one posting that shit….don’t act like you don’t sell out the culture for hits

        1. Brian B.Dot™ Miller says:

          but, i didn’t post this.

          1. cmonhomiewemajor says:

you know what i mean – unoriginal artists, biters, wack music etc.

don’t act like you’re helping the culture – what do YOU contribute that hhdx, hnhh, complex, xxl, etc. don’t already do?

Elliot actually does shit, you just sit at a desk doing what everybody other blogger does.

this is a real question – I want you to list all the contributions you can personally attest to yourself for hip hop culture.

          2. Brian B.Dot™ Miller says:

            you’re on rapradar, right? ha!

          3. cmonhomiewemajor says:

yeah, i prefer the websites layout to all the clutter on the other websites – but i guarantee you had absolutely nothing to do with that

          4. cmonhomiewemajor says:

nice job avoiding the question though. Unless you were suggesting your greatest achievement is getting me to come to rapradar…

          5. Greenbergs says:

            u didnt ask a direct question though…

          6. cmonhomiewemajor says:

yeah i did, look for the sentence that ends with a “?” sign..thats the question

          7. Greenbergs says:

yehh, u know that wasnt the question u were directing at bdot..

          8. cmonhomiewemajor says:

i asked him ” what do YOU contribute that hhdx, hnhh, complex, xxl, etc. don’t already do?”

          9. Greenbergs says:

yeh now go ahead and look at the bottom of your comment…

          10. cmonhomiewemajor says:

            youre as dumb as bdot

          11. P Dax says:

He discovered Macklemore… Oh and don’t forget Ryan Lewis ha! but yeah we could have just passed on that contribution…

          12. Lame AF says:

I agree with @cmonhomiewemajor. Your always posting lame ass artists that are dragging/dumbing down the culture. I also think its pretty embarrassing that you couldnt answer his question lol. Couldnt have done a whole lot if you couldnt give an answer. Start posting about better artists “B.Dot”. Wheres Mac Diesel when u need him lol.

      2. Megamind says:

It’s odd…but somewhat expected. We’re in an error so deficient with real lyricism, musicality and substance that when someone like YOD comes along with bars (and he does have bars) people are so easily chided. But Nas some something VERY poignant in this interview. Nas was saying that he like to come out with new music in this time and age because there’s no confusing what he does to today’s new school of style over substance rapper.

The irony of Nasir Jones…not the most articular verbatim wise when speaking…but one of the MOST prolific poets to ever live. LOL…one of my 3 favs of all time!

      5. Capuccino says:

real hip-hop heads are so sick of the pop drake and 2chains bullshit and are desperate for a throwback so they lookin for the next nas(YOD), fif(Troy Ave) etc. instead of lettin a youngin create his own lane. hip-hop has became predominately a copycat industry smdh we as fans gotta change this by gettin behind the unique rappers like logic, joey badass, and jon connor.

        1. Capuccino says:

correction… it aint the real hip-hop heads that are doin this, its the in-between type fans she dont feel the 2014 trap bullshit, but also can’t get into classic mobb deep, tribe type shit.

    6. Kevin Banks says:

Kendrick used to rhyme in a very similar style to Wayne and Jay Z but he found his own style around the Kendrick Lamar EP, you can definitely hear Kool G Rap’s influence on Nas if you pay attention.

    7. radio raheem says:

      amen mega !

    8. Uncle Tom says:

Better for niggas to sound like nas and get shine than niggas to come out sounding like dying cats like young thug and rae Sherman…fuck spelling they’re name right. Stop bitching and embrace what’s good for the culture regardless of dude biting off nas flow. it’s fucking nas the GOAT you can’t blame him at least dude didn’t steal bars from the dudes that Influenced him like jay z did.

    9. bronxbillyunz says:

BLASPHEMY! MEGAMIND – RECONSIDER – U GOT THE LITERA TURE ON THE SUBJECT – U SURE – FUCK IT! BRONSON IS NICE – BUT HE CHOKED EVERYTHING HE COULD OUTTA GHOST’S STYLE – OBVIOUSLY HE COULDN’T HELP IT..

AS FAR AS YOD – I MEAN NAS DROPPED 20 YRS AGO – NAS WAS STREET AS FUCK WHEN HE CAME OUT.. YOD IS MORE ON SOME LAID BACK WORDPLAY LYRICAL SHIT W/ A SPLASH O COMEDY- NAS WAS HARDCORE STREET ESSENCE IN A TIME WHERE THERE WAS NO “FORBES HIP HOP CASH KINGS” – IT WAS THE POETIC DELIVERY OF THAT STREET CONTENT THAT WAS NEVER DONE BEFORE – AND IT CAN’T BE DUPLICATED…

      – ILLMATIC WAS BEFORE THE INTERNET – SO WHEN HE SAID ” IM LIVIN WHERE THE NIGHTS IS JET BLACK, THE FIENDS FIGHT TO GET CRACK…” YOU FELT LIKE YOU WAS IN A DARK ALLEY – THATS WHY THEY MAKIN A MOVIE ABOUT THAT ALBUM – ITS A DIFFERENT THING ALTOGETHER – YOD COMPARISONS TO NAS IN A INSULT TO NAS – & YOD IS NICE.

    10. Greenbergs says:

we all know he was tryna find anything on dude so he can place a cease and desist order on his ass…

    11. Thee_Maddkatt says:

I’m a huge Nas fan and I don’t care for YOD either because he obviously studied and broke down Nas style and is making a name for himself with a style that isn’t his own. He could write his ideas and deliver them in his own way.
Anyhow you’re wrong to say Nas has his own style. Nas was influenced by Kool G Rap. Nas and Biggie were influenced by Kool G’s style. Though they did twist it a bit and not rip it off as their own. But Nas definitely stuck to the way G structured his raps more than Biggie.

  5. Van Sertima says:

droog reminds me more of doom than nas.

  6. Guest says:

    God of Rap Nasir Jones

  7. Esquire says:

Nas & I both never heard of this “conspiracy”…Nas should do The Breakfast Club, I hope they let Jungle jump in the interview like Fendi did on Kim’s joint lol

  8. drewsmit24 says:

Interviewer self inflicted “sonned” himself to appease weirdo conspiracy theorist…”hip hop no wait…journalism is dead”

  9. The Ghost Of Black Justice says:

Not to long ago a guy on Facebook was going back and forth with Legendary producer Domingo about Your Old Droog sounding to much like Nas. He made a lot of good points and i agreed with him. The only argument Domingo kept making was that Action Bronson sounded like Ghost Face like that was a great argument.

Your Old Droog blatantly bit NAS style. There is a few legends on the underground level who are backing him, but they dont realize that there are people who are purposely making sure Your Old Droog doesnt blow up. They are purposely going to sabotage his career. Thats the word i got from a source that is definitely in the know.

    1. M.A.T. says:

He shouldn’t blow up. It’s the equivalent of Aries Spears doing his best Jay-Z impersonation on a record.

  10. shaolinmaster says:

Old Droog is wack. His shit is basic and nowhere close to the knowledge Nas gave us. Whoever thought he was Nas shouldn’t call themselves hip hop fans. Dumb ass theory.

    1. William Witherz says:

Exactly… I never thought he was Nas but I said he wasn’t wack. Shame on the dummies that “just knew” it was Nas. I bet none of them will admit it now.
I can admit I still have the ep on my phone.

  11. ike luv says:

Old droog is basically a gimmick that only got some shine because he sounds like nas with a altered voice. Shame on anybody that becomes a fan of his especially if he shows his face. He basically sounds like nas’s song book of rhymes made into a bunch of sequels. Bronson sounds like gfk but you can tell the difference between the 2. That’s why I always wanted to kill any “the realest” fans & trust me that dude actually has some fans.

  12. this nigga nas sippin on that fountain of youth

  13. big mo says:

It’s fucking Nas…no doubt about it!

  14. Greenbergs says:

this dude is some russian kid from nyc, prolly learned how to speak english listening to nas..
