At first I thought this was bad but then I thought “what is supposed to sound good?” If he sounded like Future or any of the Future clones coming out from all over the world, would that sound good? Then we would comment saying he sounds like Future or some “typical” bullshit. He does sound completely original in the hip hop context, which may be off putting to people who are not familiar with other genres but if you do listen to indie rock you can hear his influences though.

See my above comment to Diesel. “Executing well” is living up to a “standard”. That standard is created by previous artists. The thing is when you get stuck in that type of thinking you get all these knock off artists sounding like Drake (which is basically the predicament we’re in). Remember when Jay-Z was the standard and we had all these Jay sounding rappers like Sacario and Billy Bathgate, etc, etc? The internet has helped break the standard, that’s why we have the Lil B’s and Riff Raff’s doing so well, the younger generation gets “it”, while the older generation holds on to this made up standard that has the unintended consequence of holding the genre back. Which is probably the reason NY rap is so stunted.
