Nas was one of the latest guest on the PBS show, Finding Your Roots. In the episode, Esco goes back to five generations and is shown an 1859 bill for his third great grandmother Pocahontas Little, was sold as a slave for $830. He also tells host Henry Louis Gates Jr. that he would consider purchasing the land his ancestors once lived. Blood of a slave, heart of a king.

In order to be a “great” musician you have to be able to stand beside great musicians that have come before you and your ancestors. Distant Relatives is a body of work that can stand next to Bob Marley’s work, Fela Kuti, Coltrane.. Public Enemy, Brand Nubian, Some of Wu-Tang and a few other artists have put together bodies of work which were not just “ghetto reporting” or “cinematic escapism”. There are a lot of dexterous, and amazingly “talented” musicians. But greatness is something other than talent. It’s like someone said before regarding Mayweather, he may be a greater fighter than Ali, by whatever metric you want to use, but he will never be able to shine Ali’s shoes as a great man.
Most of these artists you promote have talent in buckets, but their output doesn’t amount to more than a bucket of shit, if you put them beside the truly great people. That is what they should be aspiring to, but I know, the pop dollars look great. That’s why I don’t rate, Drake, Eminem, Lox, Biggie, 50 Cent, Wayne, anywhere near Blackstar, yes with their one album, Dead Prez, Public Enemy, and a few others. You all are lost if you can’t see this simple truth. You have lyrical miracle gymnasts masquerading like they could stand in front of their ancestors…and then you have the droves of “fans”, simple minded children championing their pabulum.

Racial tensions are in part caused by open hostility toward whites from blacks. Black anger and distrust against whites, has caused many white people to fear the black community. That fear easily turns to racism, especially in high crime areas. Now I do understand that blacks have a historic reason for that distrust, but unless both sides learn to move on and forgive each other for past transgressions done by our ancestors, or even done ourselves, we will never come together as a country or a people,. And if we don’t acknowledge that black people, share in the racial problems in this country, then we will never learn to forgive.
