J.Cole Covers ‘Complex’

Room Raiders.

Jermaine’s home again and on the cover of Complex’s Dec/Jan issue. Interviewed by his former college roommate Damien Scott, Jermaine gave us a tour of his childhood bedroom, discussed his new album, and everything else in between.

What was it like when he put the Roc chain on you?

That was a top life moment. I don’t soak shit up well, but after that night I definitely took a moment to. It wasn’t about that moment of the chain. It was like, it took so long to even get this dude to come out on stage with me. It took so long to get this guy to come to shows.

Did he just show up on his own?

No, we asked him to come. But we still didn’t know if he was going to come. You’re never sure. It was a culmination. And what I’ve realized, now that I’m far removed from that era, is that he could have been letting me grow and do my own thing. He could have looked at me with more confidence than I had in myself, like, “This kid doesn’t need Jay Z to walk out on the stage with him. He doesn’t need Jay Z to get on his song. He can do it without me.”

Jay z is a genius, he paved the way for j. cole, but it seems like j. cole is lost in the industry.

    1. J Borg says:

Yeah. Sounds like he WAS lost, but might be finding his way back now…Nas said it best…a God can’t teach someone else to be a GOD… Jay can only give him a platform, Cole has to find his own way…

      1. el jim chapo guzman says:

i agree with you 100 percent bra.

    2. Yamzz says:

Even tho it’s usually the 2nd album I think this will be make or break for him. If he’s successful with no single then you got to give it to him

      1. make or break ? nigga already made it his last album outsold kanye hes had alot of success so far i dont think hes concerned weather he gonna flop or not he has faith in the fans and jus makes music thats why hes one of the realest in the game right now

        1. Savimbi says:

Yeah i don’t understand the make or brake it part…lol Born Sinner was a great album, and the more i see these interviews and where he’s headed to w/ this next project, the more i’m appreciating Born Sinner.

          1. Yamzz says:

Make or break as in will he be as legendary as his fans want him to be or is he going remain low key and never get the respect he truly deserves

          2. Capuccino says:

his fans aint tryna make him legendary, if anything he’s staying away from that mainstream to give his real fans consistently dope music

        2. Cmon says:

Nahhhhh he “outsold Kanye through 3 weeks”, Yeezus still sold more 1st week and has higher sales to date getting certified platinum while Cole is still hovering around 600,000.

As a Cole fan you can’t deny this is a make or break album for him, he’s been gone a minute and lost almost all of the initial buzz that had cats wondering if he would leapfrog Drake as the king of rap right now. Shit even Kendrick has passed him in that pursuit, so this next album will show if niggas need to reassess the rankings or disregard Cole as a “top tier” cat.

          1. yeah but still the fact he did the numbers he did and still outsold in those 3 weeks is a good achievement considering kanye is a superstar and kendrick and cole are already better mc’s than drake in my opinion

      2. el jim chapo guzman says:

bad promotions from roc nation no singles.

    3. Shamir says:

J COLE DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT THE INDUSTRY. DONT YOU GET IT

      1. el jim chapo guzman says:

yeah i get it, that why his money slow.

        1. tbh says:

And thsts y u dont get Cole cuz he aint all about the money, hes about the art and the people. His mark is solidified hes already legendary some peoples eyes. He proved himself a long time ago. Mixtapes sound like albums.

          1. el jim chapo guzman says:

cole is a dope lyricist but honestly he’s cold out there.

    4. Capuccino says:

dik wat u talking bout lost in the industry, from what i can see ever since the warm up he hasn’t missed yet

  2. FREE MAX B says:

I thought Wale and Seinfeld were on the cover of the Dec/Jan issue. Then I read on here that Nicki Minaj was also getting the cover of complex for Dec/Jan and now it seems that J Cole is getting a cover too all for the same month?????

    1. The Incredible Creation says:

i know that always do 2 different “covers” usually male on one side female on the other or something of that nature… but yeah i thought Wale n Jerry had it locked as well.. *shrugs* http://toomanyfuckinrappers.tumblr.com/

  3. Maurice ReBe' Bass says:

  5. RightHook says:

Applaud this man…….Never been a big Cole fan, always respected what he brought to the table. But this is beyond noble….Buying his childhood home and making it available to Families who couldn’t normally afford it, for 2 years……honorable. I always envisioned when i was financially able , to do something along these lines…buy homes or apt buildings in Baltimore and make them affordable for a TIME to families to get their lives on track , then allow another family or families in need to get the same opportunity. Its great to see a young African American Man doing something so profound like this.

    1. The Incredible Creation says:

Respect, from Baltimore as well…. http://theincrediblecreation.wordpress.com/

  6. Dk says:

Cole bout to come thru and murk things
