Jay Z Meets With NY Governor Cuomo

So Whatcha Sayin?

Hov quietly met with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo today to discuss criminal justice reform. Below is an account from Cuomo Communications Director, Melissa DeRosa.

“Governor Cuomo and Shawn ‘JAY Z’ Carter had a productive conversation about doing a top to bottom review of the Criminal Justice system and how we can all work together to pass a reform package that ensures equality in the eyes of the law.”

If that wasn’t enough, dailykos published this piece on Hov’s unpublicized acts of philanthropy. Did you know that he pays the tuition of Sean Bell’s children? Or that he’s provided financial aid to the folks working the ground in Ferguson? Just because a famous face isn’t wearing a T-shirt or firing off tweets, doesn’t mean they’re apathetic. Stop looking to celebrities for answers and be the change you want to see.

Unless it’s on instagram or being tweeted, people act as if you can’t move in silence..

Why did you delete my comment after schooling you on who the Governor of New York is?
I am a foreigner and I know this.
The average American can be so ignorant… :((

        1. Brian B.Dot™ Miller says:

          huh?

      2. BDot Is A Shill says:

It’s not moving in silence or “unpublicized” or “anonymous” as some others have put it if the media/blogs are publishing stories about it. I fuck with all the causes he’s supporting but let’s stop acting like he didn’t have a hand in making sure his name was behind it

        1. Dashing28 says:

Exactly. That’s the thing, even when it’s a story about how he’s doing things behind the scenes and not publically is Public.

If you google Jay z Eric Garner now, there are tons of stories that talk about his non-public work, so let’s not pretend that the info just leaked somehow.

That said, it’s good to hear either way. And I hope that more rappers say and do more. PUBLICALLY and behind the scenes..

          1. marty mcfly says:

I wonder how many people writing those stories have actually done something themselves as far as work goes in the area of philanthropy cause you don’t have to be rich to do that.

      3. Dashing28 says:

Protesting and charity are different things.

There are some cases where being public and visible is necessary.

If there’s an environment out there that encourages people of influence to make gestures it increases pressure on other rappers, celebrities, sponsors, etc. to take action as well. (i.e. The Rams led to D. Rose, led to Nets, led to the Lakers)

That said, this IS public. Or ya’ll wouldn’t know about it so I’m glad he’s decided to move in that direction.

        1. Brian B.Dot™ Miller says:

There are some cases where being public and visible is necessary
          ^^
          I completely disagree

          1. Dashing28 says:

I explained my logic. Care to elaborate?

          2. Just wondering says:

You disagree there are SOME cases where being public and visible is necessary? So you think there are zero cases where being public and visible are necessary? Are you that obtuse?

        1. marty mcfly says:

STFU, you agree with the officer’s actions and cosign that choking the man to death was necessary even though he was on the ground with several officers already on top of him.

          1. el jim chapo guzman says:

            aye racist marty.

          2. marty mcfly says:

NO statement I’ve made is racist, you however have made plenty. Your racists for sure, you just don’t know it but you have the same mentality as a baby with two Klan parents.

          3. el jim chapo guzman says:

Wars and slavery have existed forever. Read history and learn marty.
Black Africans are some of the cruelest people on earth, so
don’t limit yourself to hating white people only.

          4. marty mcfly says:

Thats a lie. You framed that bullshit in a way thats uneducated and also based on a lie. Lets talk body count (the killing of millions) and treatment of slaves (brutality that lasted centuries)… There is a huge difference. What Africans you talking about specifically? Cause Africans took prisoners of war which people referred to as slaves, Africans took people who owed debts and made them work and they were called slaves, Africans invaded other African places and the people who surrendered were called slaves. However Africans released their prisoners when the war was done, they released their slaves when the debt was paid, they made their slaves equal to their own citizens after they were released in many cases. Africans did not enslave people for their whole life and did not enslave generations of people and did not brutalize them and did not mass murder and oppress them for centuries. Now of course you have warfare that turned brutal in many cases but there is not African slave trade thats even remotely close to the same level of cruelty as white people and if so then what Africans specifically? What part of Africa and who were their slaves? and were they even African? America is built on the backs of slaves. What African nation used other Africans as slaves to build up their whole economic power?

          5. el jim chapo guzman says:

who peed in your oatmeal today marty?

          6. marty mcfly says:

What Africans were as cruel to other Africans to the level of the Slave trade from Africa to America, funded by Europe?

        2. AK says:

Because that shit ain’t gonna bring Eric Garner back, atleast meeting with Cuomo has a 1% chance of making something happen

    To summarize

-Jay Z is meeting Today with New York Gov. Mario Cuomo to urge him to appoint a special prosecutor in the choking death of Eric Garner.

-Jay has paid and is still paying for the tuition of the children of NYPD shooting victim Sean Bell.

-Quietly, Jay has given financially to people working on the ground in Ferguson.

-Quietly, Jay has supported justice for those discriminated against in the trans community.

-Jay has paid to send HUNDREDS of high school students, who, by the way, are very often on the margins of society and actually have to have a GPA of 2.7 or below, through coge.

To be honest his doing it properly, the money will go to those that really need it. So what have all the rest of those fake ice bucket challenge celebrities been doing ?

Hey my name is jay-z and I have sold drugs to many and ripped lives apart now ease up on he way you police criminals and prosecute ok…

Yes I would say there is a need for the judicial system to reevaluate the way things are done but come on why aren’t the brothers who have lead a pretty solid life and neve did anything to cause any kind of behave turmoil within the communities..

People always willing to forgive when someone shells out some money….they owe that much to give back jay ain’t doing nothing but trying to make some right of his wrongs..I commend him but my beef is about the positive brothers who go unoticed cus they don’t have the money or powere to toss around!

    1. Selorm Amuzu says:

Because at the end of the day, Jay used his situation to be successful and gain his influence via his music and sent it out to the ppl. Whatever happened afterwards is on the people not Jay. They should have supported more positive ppl if they didn’t fuck with it… simple !

        DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

    2. Dashing28 says:

This is on RR, all over the internet and unmissable if you google “Jay Z Eric Garner”. It IS a public statement….

If it was truly below the radar (no pun intended), we wouldn’t know about it ever….in the last 3 days we find out about him making the “I can’t Breathe” shirts for the Nets, meeting with Cuomo, and all of the work he’s done for Sean Bell’s family and the protesters….

It’s clearly a concerted effort to notify the public that he’s doing things. There’s nothing wrong with that. I applaud it. But it confirms that Hov understands the value of making public “statements”. I hope he continues to do that and others too..

      1. marty mcfly says:

You just found out these things. If he really cared about making a public statement he would’ve have already let people know these things himself. He probably could care less what you people think but somebody in his camp probably feels like his information should be out there. Young Guru for example feels like people don’t know half the shit Jay be doing so he often will ask Jay to make it public and Jay feels like he doesn’t need a pat on the back. The “public” are haters, crabs in a barrel for the most part. They are not concerned with any positivity, they just want any chance say fuck Jayz period.

        1. Dashing28 says:

I don’t hate Jay Z. I think he’s arguably the best rapper ever. I’m not looking for an excuse to hate on the man. On certain issues there’s a value to being public. This situation is one of them.

“You just found out these things”

Don’t be naive dude. You think it just happened that all of this info leaked out, that we just happened to have a pic of him with Governor Cuomo, that we just happened to have heard he printed the shirts for the Nets in the most public game they’ve had all year (playing against Cleveland with the royal family in town)? Come on man.

We didn’t “just find out.” There was a concerted effort to put the info out there, including through outlets like RR.

It’s a good thing too, not just for the pat on the back, but because, like I said, there’s a value to being public when it comes to issues like this. Hove obviously is aware of that as well or we wouldnt have known about any of this…

          1. marty mcfly says:

So how much “value” is it for JAYZ? What does Jay get for it? I didnt say the information leaked out? What I implied was if this is important to other people in Jay’s camp then they may have suggested the information be made public. Would Jay have to ok that move? Probably, however the public cant offer Jay nothing he doesn’t already have for this information. The “value” of Jay speaking on this is almost nothing. Jay gets nothing, its only people that get something outta knowing Jay is doing this. Jay gets nothing outta making “statements”.

          2. Dashing28 says:

Fam, you’re making it seem like I’m hating on Jay when I’m doing the exact opposite. Re-read what I wrote.

You missed my point….I’m not saying that Jay is doing this for any personal gain at all…what I’m saying is there’s a value (NOT to Jay Z personally) but to the issue itself for Jay Z to come out publically.

There’s a benefit to the CAUSE by Jay coming out and showing publically that he’s meeting with Cuomo and all this other stuff because Diddy will be more likely to get involved as will Kanye or Magic Johnson or sponsors or whoever else.
It helps the issue when more people are publically vocal. And this is Jay’s way of being publically vocal. He didn’t tweet it or rap about it or do interviews, but he did make sure we knew about it by letting all of the information be out there…..(and here’s the other part you keep misinterpreting) AND that’s a GOOD thing. More people should know and be aware that people of influence are taking steps to address the issues and taking a stand. It only helps.

          3. marty mcfly says:

Ok thats fine but people have to also stop looking for people with influence to get involved. The thing is people have a problem with them not getting involved as well. What if Jay didnt get involved? Would that be a problem? And if so why? Do the people need Jayz? No. My thing is if people wanna be positive about the situation then ok. I know few will be and many will still say fuck Jayz even though the nigga is trying to address world hunger and poverty outside of just this issue but if Jayz decides NOT to make any statements (and I don’t think this is a “statement)? then people have to understand that Jay can’t address every issue and they should not feel any type of way about it because Jayz is not the people. The people are the people. People that are persistent in making change are ten times more powerful then Jayz because a “statement” is not action.

          4. El Moreno says:

brotha u have been ranting in circle.
i have been reading the comments just to read ppls opinion on this matter and u are just reaching. I’m actually super happy about the news of what jayz is doing for the ppl.
no i didn’t know he was doing everything I’m reading he is doing for the kids of SB, no i did not know what he was doing for the ground workers in ferguson, no i did not know he paid to print them shirts for the nets( this one i could have predicted ).yes i did read about his influence on stop and frisk, and yes i did see his actions when ppl was mad that he was still keeping his collab with Barney’s.
ppl just want u to do what they say at all times, if this news didn’t come out ppl would be mad that he aint doing nothing, now that the news is out, i hear ya saying he doing it for publicity ( if u was a business u would do to).
when do we stop and just say THANK U FOR TRYING YOUR BEST TO HELP?
when do the negative thinking stops?
@brianbdotmiller:disqus i come to this comment section really because i love the fact that u communicate with ppl in a very educated way for the most part, i mention that just incase ppl haven’t express that here…..

          5. marty mcfly says:

And your doing and implying exactly what I was saying people would do if Jay made anything he was doing public. People are not gonna just say thank you and leave at that. They gonna say that Jay must be doing this so he could get something outta having attention? This is why I don’t even feel he should let people know shit because they are not appreciative, they just act like Jay doing something is somehow helping Jayz? Or like he’s gaining something personally from this? No

  20. Selorm Amuzu says:

This is exactly why I have always stood by statement that Jay doesn’t have to move on your time. The moment you are seen making positive moves publicly, you find a reason to be skeptic for some reason. It’s like a man giving someone the world and he is mad cos the man didn’t give him the moon. Just be happy he is doing his part because at the end of the day regardless of what platform he is on he’s only gonna do his part

  21. Dee Moe says:

Shau King is known to be a Jay staff writer. That’s the guy who wrote all the great things Jay is doing. let me correct some. 1st No he didn’t meet with the Gov about reform. That image is old and it was a meeting about made in Amerikkka. 2nd he initially was to set up a trust fund for Bell but it was coming from Roc a wear. He sold that company and that trust went away. Also the family denied the trust because it was during thee civil suit and they did not want to interfere with case. 3rd I’m on the front lines in ferguson and i’m sorry don’t see where anyone is supporting.
My final take is this it is great to move public or private just move. However, when you have the voice to motivate others there is a time to do so. For any entertainer if your given a voice and choose to be silent. What good is that voice?
